Rob Clutton/Ben Grossman/Germaine Liu/cheryl o - [excerpt from first piece, part 3]
I spent most of this hot/damp/hard-to-think slog of a day waiting for a thunderstorm to descend to take the edge off things. It never arrived, but the cooling evening brought refreshment through some sonic thunderclaps at Ratio. This improvising quartet lead off the night, featuring some always-welcome (though too-rarely heard) sounds from cheryl o (cello) and Guelph's Ben Grossman (hurdy gurdy). They were joined by local stalwarts Rob Clutton (electric bass) and Germaine Liu (percussion) in a unit that o promised would be performing together again. (She even casually mentioned they would henceforth be known as "Group Hug".) The sound moved from the lurching propulsion of someone trying to walk without falling down into more chaotic swells of noise. This extract here splits nicely into the well-loved LOUD-quiet-LOUD format.
