Monday Roundup #67

Someday this space might be mostly concert listings again, but for now Monday roundups might include a romp through the MFS archives, some bandcamp suggestions, nods to a few livestreams, and sundry community notes (email me if you have anything that needs broadcast in the latter category!).

Community notes:

  • As you'll see in the concert listings below, the centrepiece of this week is definitely the Women From Space festival. It's worth amplifying that, with the additional note that the experience will be enriched with a series of "Space Talks", pre-concert chats presented on Thursday through Saturday by Musicworks Magazine featuring a wide variety of the festival's performers (including Sara Constant, Aline Homzy, Susanna Hood, Nicole Rampersaud, Paramorph Collective, Lisa Conway, Lori Freedman, Grace Scheele, TUSH and Ronley Teper) digging deeper into their work. [nightly at 7.]

Livestream nation:

  • Exit Points #26 (on Wednesday night) sees two sets of electroacoustic free-improvisation, from Pouya Hamidi/Black Galaxie/Esin Gunduz and Ayako Kato/Aida Khorsandi/Thispatcher, plus the usual community-engaged partitipatory explorations.

Song: Improvisation for Justin + We'll Be Okay

Recorded at The Tranzac's Main Hall (Service for Justin Haynes), April 19, 2019.

Barnyard Drama - Improvisation for Justin + We'll Be Okay [composer: Justin Haynes]

Some things are hard. In the aftermath of a sudden loss, family, friends and collaborators joined together to celebrate the life and music of Justin Haynes. Famously banned from The Tranzac, the sad smiles at the fact of his return were indicative of the vibe: shock and sadness with a grimly-funny streak. Hopefully being together helped some people move forward in processing this tragedy, and hopefully Justin's music and spirit will be remembered and celebrated. Over the course of the afternoon and evening, many of his fellow-travelers paid tribute by revisiting Justin's material or offering some new tributes. Here's a few of the sounds from the day.

Starting with Christine Duncan's voice and Jean Martin's percussion, this farewell grew to encompass most of the day's performers as it slowly transformed into Haynes' hymn to hard-won okayness, serving as a benediction to close out the event.

Song: Miss Otis Regrets [Cole Porter cover]

Recorded at Array Space (The Music Gallery's Departures Series), April 29, 2015.

Barnyard Drama - Miss Otis Regrets

The most exciting moments at this offsite Music Gallery show came in the night's middle set, with a too-rare chance to see Barnyard Drama in action. This longtime pairing of Christine Duncan (voice) and Jean Martin (percussion, electronics) hasn't been performing much of late, doubtless because of the many external projects (including Element Choir for Duncan and Tanya Tagaq for Martin) the pair have on the go. Their set comprised of a pair of long pieces, each building from quiet to raucous — the second was this rendition of a Cole Porter classic (that the pair tackled back on their first album) that would eventually tear the song's structure into tiny bits and reassemble them in a tower of noise, with Duncan dropping the mic to her side to see if her unamplified voice could compete with the drumkit behind her. (It could.)
