Liz Lima/Brodie West/Andrew Kay/Paul Newman - Job's Anguish [last section]

This night of improvisations closed out with a clarinet quartet essaying this new composition ("a sort of collage piece," it was explained) from Brian Abbott, who also conducted.

You can check out the complete piece over on youtube:

[This is the sort of thing you might hear more of at gatherings of the Cowbell Composer Collective, who have just started a residency at The Tranzac on second Sundays of the month, so keep an eye for further announcments on that front.]

Recording: Andrew Kay

Artist: Andrew Kay

Song: [first piece]

Recorded at The Tranzac's Southern Cross Lounge (Music By & For Ken Aldcroft XXIV), December 12, 2018.

Andrew Kay - [first piece]

Saxophonist Andrew Kay had previously played this series with some music by Ken Aldcroft, but this time brought some solo and duo improvisations in his memory. Alternating between alto, clarinet and bass clarinet, there were some different textures and moods explored here, especially when Jake Parker Scott (now based in Oakland) joined in on alto, a touch of piano and some genteel impromptu percussion.

[Music By & For Ken Aldcroft will be back at The Tranzac on Wednesday, February 13th.]

Recording: Furlong-Kay-Sorbara

Artist: Andrew Furlong/Andrew Kay/Joe Sorbara

Song: X Marks The Spot [composer: Ken Aldcroft]

Recorded at The Tranzac's Southern Cross Lounge (Music by & for Ken Aldcroft VIII), August 9, 2017.

Andrew Furlong/Andrew Kay/Joe Sorbara - X Marks The Spot

This combo, with curator Joe Sorbara on drums joined by Andrew Furlong on double bass and Andrew Kay on saxophone, tackled some of Ken Aldcroft's compositions (and a couple others) with a jazz trio approach. It worked especially well with the sneaky/snaky stop/start rhythms of this piece.

[Music By & For Ken Aldcroft will return to The Tranzac next week (September 13th).]

Recording: Andrew Kay + Brian Abbott

Artist: Andrew Kay + Brian Abbott

Song: [excerpt from first piece]

Recorded at Array Space ("Audiopollination 36"), November 10, 2015.

Andrew Kay + Brian Abbott - [excerpt from first piece]

Another night in Audiopollination's ongoing self-curation series saw a series of duets. This pairing saw Andrew Kay's sax and Brian Abbott's prepared guitar crest through several waves of agreeable-wiggly drones and skittering pitch-shifted loops.

[This year's self-curation series concludes Tuesday, December 8th at Array Space.]
