Monday Roundup #28

In the absence of concert listings, my regular Monday dispatches have fallen off. After bringing some life to the blog with the "bumping into" series, I figure I should get back in the groove. I'm guessing that this will be a bit like what used to get shoved into the end of the post when I was doing listings — some bandcamp suggestions, nods to a few livestreams, and sundry community notes (email me if you have anything that needs broadcast in the latter category!). Plus maybe a look back through the MFS archives.

Video hits:

  • Tamara Lindeman seems eager to hit the stages with some real-life audiences to celebrate this year's Ignorance album, and if this is anything to go by, she'll be bringing along a top-notch band (here including Kieran Adams, Christine Bougie, Philippe Melanson, Karen Ng, Johnny Spence and Ben Whiteley) in fine form.

Livestream nation:

  • The end of the month means Exit Points will be returning for an evening of electroacoustic exploration (that'd be on Wednesday the 28th) with two curated sets (consisting of Jaames Willoughby, Clara Takarabe, Kasey Pocius and thispatcher up first, followed by Yunjin Claire Lee, Scott Lepore and Kavi) as well as the usual online community "switchemups". Catch the stream (and find out how you can participate) here.

Song: Freeloader Feast

Recorded at MOCA (Not Dead Yet Presents), June 29, 2019.

Deliluh - Freeloader Feast

There was a bit of physical/emotional dislocation and relocation at this show, sorting through the realities and ironies of our gentrifying city. Recently a sort of semi-abandoned zone where off-the-grid culture flourished (and just over from where some cool DIY loft spaces used to be) and in a formerly-abandoned building (where audiences and musicians like the ones at hand used to sneak in and explore and smoke a joint, looking out over the city) this show took place in the new Museum of Contemporary Art, now refinished with a sort of austere/pricey minimalism and filled with Expensive Things. From the back of the long, rectangular space, held up by large circular concrete pillars, it looked not unlike a show taking place underneath a highway overpass — and by virtue of the space, it sounded more than a little like one too. Is this a simulacrum of independent culture, selling us back our nostalgia for a recently-departed past at a bespoke markup? Or is it just a matter of trying to find any sort of space in a city where space for the DIY spirit is getting crowded out?

Back from a tour and sharp as razorblades, this show served as the official release celebration for Deliluh's Oath Of Intent EP. It'd actually been a hot minute since I had seen the band in action, certainly not since they solidified with their current four-piece lineup with frontman Kyle Knapp and longstanding guitarist Julius Pedersen joined by Erik Jude (formerly of HSY, here on bass) and Erika Wharton-Shukster (on drums). Playing with fierceness and clarity, this was a tightly-focused set, showing off the EP's tunes, re-arranging a couple old ones and then finishing with one brand new one to leave the audience wanting more.

Deliluh - Bulls Run Free

A special night for Deliluh, celebrating the release of their Day Catcher album. With his talent for community-building, frontman/guitarist Kyle Knapp found a cool alternative space (almost right on his own doorstep, no less) to create a DIY venue for this show, giving the proceedings a basement party vibe and space to stretch out a bit on the intros and on this more meditative song.

Song: Siam

Recorded at The Gladstone Hotel's Ballroom (Long Winter 5.4), March 24, 2017.

Deliluh - Siam

Long Winter ended its abbreviated, roving season with a return to The Gladstone, filling the second floor with art and the Ballroom and Melody Bar with ping-ponging live sets. From minimalist slack-haze to drop-D walls of sound, Deliluh continues to stretch out its tunes, none more so than on this expansive set-closer. Keep an eye out for news on an album release show soon!

Recorded at The Silver Dollar Room, January 27, 2017.

Deliluh - No I.D. Denied

A question mark had been hanging over the Silver Dollar's future for months, but this was the night that officially marked the beginning of the end, with a firm closing date suddenly giving a sense of finality about things — and a jolt to a music community suddenly seeing an epidemic of venues closing. On stage, Deliluh were in Saturday Night rock'n'roll mode — augmented with James Burling (keyb) and Alex Low (guit) there was an Academy of Sciences fam-jam vibe to this different lineup to the last time I caught 'em. The steps made toward stripping back/quieting down are either on hold or being allowed to co-evolve with a newfound heavy abandon as the band focused on stretched-out Pavement jam/drones.

Song: Mass. Son

Recorded at Owl's Club (basement), November 10, 2016.

Deliluh - Mass. Son

This night was held down in the awesome space of the Owl's Club basement, a room feeling untouched by time, where it could easily be twenty or thirty years ago. This space has been the site of a few shows lately presented by Raw Materials, a loose coalition that's more of a co-operative than a label — they put out tapes and book shows, but also have their own late-night talk show. A lot of these efforts are overseen by Kyle Knapp, who's been putting on community minded shows at libraries and other cool spots.

He also fronts Deliluh, a band that seems to be shedding old skins and exploring new forms. A bit more of a ramshackle rock concern on their first couple EP's, things are being stripped back to the point that older songs are being reinterpreted solo or as a duo. This band incarnation sort of splits the difference, sounding at times like John Critchley fronting Pavement, but quite often the debris slide is being reined in and pushing the band toward sleep-rock territory. In fact, things were often at their best here when the band was languidly working their way into a song, such as on this set opener that has some violin textures from Ami Spears, before she switched over to drums.
