Bandcamp corner:

  • A slice of essential local music is back in circulation with a new resissue of One Hundred Dollars' debut album Forest of Tears, with both a vinyl repress and digital/bandcamp version available. The first flowering of Simone Schmidt's emerging songwriting prowess and a crack band using country music forms to explore hard times in the big city and beyond. I recommend reading Schmidt's recollections here. (And meanwhile, it's hard to understate how much this album, this band, these songs were a foundational element of this blog — this was the sort of thing that I wanted to hear, wanted to document, wanted to share.)
  • And as a tasty companion to that, here's a hitherto-unreleased single from the folowing year with One Hundred Dollars and Rick White (who produced Forest of Tears), with Schmidt taking the vocals on a cover of White's "Pain" while the band backs White on a cover of "Nights in White Satin" on the flip.

(And if you hadn't realized, the whole Blue Fog Recordings discography is now on bandcamp, so you have no excuse to be listening to essentials like Wyrd Visions' Half Eaten Guitar and hard-to-find rarities like his shared 12" with Castlemusic.)

Labyrinth Ensemble - Makam Ussak [excerpt]

Labyrinth Ensemble - Makam Toronto

It's always a delight to be able to catch the Labyrinth Ensemble in full flight. Once more, this concert was based on the principle of bringing in a world-class expert (in this case, Greek mandolinist Evgenios Voulgaris) to spend some intensive rehearsal time with the group before presenting what they've learned to the public. Voulgaris brought a selection of 17th-century works collected by Romanian prince Dimitrie Cantemir, showcasing the cultural connections being forged in the court of the Ottoman Empire. The show was presented as a pair of suites, each united by a particular makam, or mode, with the ensemble seguing from one piece to the next by honing in on individual members, giving everyone space in the foreground before showing how their sound is woven into the larger perspective. The first piece here highlights MFS fave Naomi McCarroll-Butler's saxophone work while the latter is a brand new piece (in the combiniation-of-things "Toronto mode") that Voulgaris wrote for the group while in the city.

The full ensemble for this show was: Evgenios Voulgaris – oud and yaylı tambur; Sadaf Amini – santur; Yang Chen – riqq, bendir; Burak Ekmekci – baglama; Michael K. Harrist – yayli tanbur; Pedram Khavarzamini – tombak; Roa Lee – gayageum; Naomi McCarroll-Butler – saxophone, clarinet, and bass clarinet; John McKinnon – electric bass; Scott Peterson – upright bass; Araz Salek – tar; Marta Solek – cello and greek lyra; Tev Stevig – tanbur and oud; Aysel Taghi-Zada – violin; Amely Zhou – erhu.

[Labyrinth Ontario will be hosting an instrument library at City Hall as part of Doors Open Toronto next weekend (May 27th + 28th). Visitors are welcome to come by all weekend and explore the space and hear demonstrations!]

* As mentioned above, this is a segment of the set-long suite of ussak music. Please leave a comment in you know the name(s) of the partricular piece(s)!

Contest: Rumba: Soul of Congo

Rumba: Soul of Congo

Saturday, May 20, 2023 @ Paradise Theatre

I've said it here often but seeing "Batuki Music Society" on a show poster is a real mark of quality — even if you don't know the particular artist, you can be assured you're getting a chance to see a talented performer. This all-star show coming up next weekend is no exception to that, and you can expect a groovy night of percolating music from a select crew of Montréal, Paris and Toronto-based musicians, including Olivier Tshimanga (guitar, singer), Blandine Mbiya (singer, dancer), Pecosse Animations (singer), Noel Mpiaza (drums), Dauphin Mbuyi (bass), Jean-Claude Kamina a.k.a. R9 (guitar), Samson Owandji (keyboards) and Walter Maclean (congas). "These artists share a deep connection through the language, stories and rumba songs that define their Congolese heritage. They have been inspired by rumba music and its evolving forms which is reflected in their own artistic work."

"This concert will present repertoire to celebrate the artistry of veterans and icons of Congolese music; Dr. Nico, Grand Kalle, Tabu Ley Rochereau, Franco Luambo, Papa Wemba, Abeti Masikini, M’bilia Bel and more. A presentation to celebrate the UNESCO designation of Congolese rumba music as an intangible heritage."

Toronto Improvisors Orchestra - [set 2, 2nd piece]

A thousand pardons, please, for the lack of photo or any cogent notes from this one — it turns out sometimes when you pop in for a TIO gig on a quiet Easter Sunday, you'll sometimes get asked to come on up and join in, and then you're all distracted from documenting things.

Monday Roundup #121

Community notes:

  • A big week at the Music Gallery with this year's edition of What Is: (a multipart performance and discussion series that examines the threads that tie music together). "This year’s theme, futurism, reaches beyond genre and explores the complexities in dreaming for a future that may not promise to be so bright. It examines tropes, probes necessary discourse, encourages dreaming, and embeds our sonic aspirations into the future." There are two multimedia concerts on Thursday and Saturday (listed below) plus two (free!) discussion-based events: an Indigenous Futurism Panel on Wednesday at 918 Bathurst and "The Future of People", an interview and book signing of the Detroit techno-inspired graphic novel The Book of Drexciya at It's Ok* Studios (468 Queen St W) on Friday.

Recording: Tapocalypse Now

Artist: Tapocalypse Now

Song: [excerpt]

Recorded at Array Space (Audiopollination), April 7, 2023.

Tapocalypse Now - [excerpt]

The night's closing curated set saw series host Mike Lynn making his debut on amplifed tap board. Besides running the contact mic on his tap board through his own array of effects, the signal was shared with synthesist Heraclitus Akimbo, who did some more signal bending while fuZzy Nibesh (guitar, oscillatorss, effects) added some indpendent sympathetic sounds. If not quite the smell of napalm in the morning, a tappin' trip into the sonic heart of darkness.

As usual, Audiopollination did an excellent job at documenting the show, so you can watch some high-quality footage of this whole set over on youtube:

[Audiopollination is back at Array Space on Friday (May 12th) with sets from Diane Roblin/Andrew Kay/FuZzy, Adam Golding/Kyle Skillman/Saba Saneinejad, Patrick O’Reilly/Paul Newman/Jaz Tsui, and Tegan Dietsch & Annie Elgie.]

James Lowrie & Ryan Kinney - [excerpt from first piece]

A low-key guitar meetup with introspective timbres pushed outward as James Lowrie turned to the piano for sonic variation while Ryan Kinney pulled out his ping pong balls and other preparations.

As usual, Audiopollination did an excellent job at documenting the show, so you can watch some high-quality footage of this whole set over on youtube:

Recording: Bailey/Farkas/Yogarajah

Artist: James Bailey/Susanne Farkas/Marilyn Yogarajah

Song: [first piece]

Recorded at Array Space (Audiopollination), April 7, 2023.

James Bailey/Susanne Farkas/Marilyn Yogarajah - [first piece]

As is sometimes the case at Audiopollination, there can be last-minute lineup changes and substitutions, so it was no surprise to surpise on the faces of James Bailey (amplified crutch) and Susanne Farkas (bells, kalimba, snare, flute, voice) as Marilyn Yogarajah sat down at the piano at the set's beginning. Turns out her subtle playing provided the glue that really held things together and buoyed this set up.

Martin van de Ven/Saba Saneinejad/Brian Katz - [excerpt]

As frequently happens, this "self-curated" set brought the goods, producing a lovely mix of sounds from Martin van de Ven (clarinet), Saba Saneinejad (flute), and Brian Katz (classical guitar), the trio effortlessly finding some space to float together in.

As usual, Audiopollination did an excellent job at documenting the show, so you can watch some high-quality footage of this whole set over on youtube:

Recording: The Allison Cameron Band

Artist: The Allison Cameron Band

Song: Maggie Dargai [excerpt]

Recorded at The Tranzac (Southern Cross Lounge), April 5, 2023.

The Allison Cameron Band - Maggie Dargai [excerpt]

A too-rare chance to see the "new" AC Band, with Allison Cameron (mostly on banjo here) joined by Thom Gill (guit/keyb) and Kurt Newman (guit/effects). There were some improvisations from the trio but it was especially excting to see some compositions being essayed, including this piece (carrying over some Martin Arnold deconstructed folk vibes) from the essential self-titled album.

You can catch the full piece, as well as an improvisation, over on youtube:

Recording: Why Be Normal

Artist: Why Be Normal

Recorded at Wenona Lodge (Track Could Bend #78), April 4, 2023.

Why Be Normal - [excerpt]

Every once in a while I like to curate a set combining folks who might not have even met but that I suspect would be in sync, musically and vibe-wise — and all the better when it's a chance to spark some intergenerational collaboration and inspiration. Hearing a tale from Colin C. (who performs as %%30%30) of a particularly enticing curb find made me think of similar stories from James Bailey, which lead to this junk percussion duo. Setting a wide variety of found objects throught the room, the pair made some joyful sounds, finding the musical soul in everything from spikes to vacuum cleaners to plastic bags.

You can check out some footage of the (nearly) full set over on youtube:

Recording: Flip Side

Songs: [first piece, in two parts]

Recorded at Wenona Lodge (Track Could Bend #78), April 4, 2023.

Flip Side - [first piece, part 1]

Flip Side - [first piece, part 2]

It wasn't entirely a coincidence that I had invited Allison Cameron out to perform on this specific month, as April marked the series' eighth anniversary — and who better to celebrate that with than someone who had been on stage back at TCB #1? For this outing, she brought her laptop and no-input mixer and invited along Fahmid Nibesh, who added some sounds on guitar, oscillators, harmonica and pedals.

Song: [full set]

Density Creep - [full set]

This new project from Beard Closet's Phil Hamilton puts away the guitar and careens full speed into the nearest harsh noise wall, exploding in a focused burst.
