Recording: Hexzuul

Artist: Hexzuul

Song: [3rd piece, edit]

Recorded at The Tranzac's Tiki Room (Cold Early Spring), March 16, 2019.

Hexzuul - [3rd piece, edit]

This aptly-named night, curated by Hexzuul's David Jones, saw the temperature falling and some occasional snow flurries outside, and a warm crowd filling the Tiki Room. Jones also lead off the night with a set mixing dreamy ambient sounds with austere noise, and ending — just like old times — with some wires being pulled loose.

Song: [first movement]*

Recorded at Monarch Tavern, August 28, 2016.

Hexzuul - [first movement]

David Jones lead off this night of electronic/synth variations with an extended piece based around a self-hypnosis tape, which moved from drift-off-to-sleep to noise shards and back again. Lay back, close your eyes, and you'll wake up strangely refreshed.

* I don't know if this piece as a whole has a title; I will update if I get more info!

Recording: Hexzuul

Artist: Hexzuul

Song: [excerpt from first part]

Recorded at Double Double Land (NASA – Noise Against Sexual Assault), July 10, 2016.

Hexzuul - [excerpt from first part]

Envisioned as "a night of noise, dark electronic, and doom rock in support of sexual assault survivors and in solidarity with Larkin Grimm", this event was programmed as a counter-gig to Swans' local appearance. It was also an attempt for DIY spaces to face up to the problems of taking responsibility for what happens within their walls and to begin a discussion of some "best practices" to create safer spaces.

David Jones led off the night, mixing some harsh backgrounds with serenely-floating foregrounds — creating a sonic bed for some howling and other sounds.

[Hexzuul will be playing at The Monarch Tavern on Sunday, August 28th, with a rather compelling lineup that also includes Psychic Pollution, Mystic Triangle, and Cell Memory & Castle If.]

Artist: Hexzuul

Song: [excerpt]*

Recorded at Katzman Contemporary (Channel no. 2: Reality), January 13, 2016.

Hexzuul - [excerpt]

This five-night series, curated by Brett Despotovich, is bringing Toronto's experimental music scenes into a gallery space — both to allow some considered listening and to enable a series of large-scale visual collaborations. (This night drew inspiration from the morass of so-called "reality" television.) Besides the well-chosen music, this will also be an introduction for many to a rather lovely space — gallery culture, which tends to stay one step ahead of gentrification in the search for affordable spaces, has now seeped up to Carleton Village. So this week, hop on the Symington bus and go check out some cool collaborations.

This set from David Jones' solo project was less menacing and physical than the previous time I saw him in action, hums giving way to sawing buzz-zworps as Jones guided not only his musical tones but some analog visual interventions over a TV loop, with a face being mirrored and split, refractions folding into each other as visual noise curled in from the edges.

[Channel's run at Katzman Contemporary continues through Saturday, with cool musicians using the space to collaborate with the visualisations in different ways.]

Recording: Hexzuul

Artist: Hexzuul

Song: [excerpt]

Recorded at The Steady Cafe & Bar (Kulture II), October 13, 2015.

Hexzuul - [excerpt]

Kulture is culture, but louder. This occasional noise night was expertly assembled by David Jones (who performed this night as Hexzuul, but is also a member of Manticore and Bile Sister) and took place in the somewhat unlike setting of the backroom of The Steady, which feels a bit like a joint that got stuck somewhere in mid-transition from a diner to a tiki bar. Backed by some cool glitched-out visuals, Jones offered a mix of sputter/crackle, ominous hums, piercing buzzings, and explosions of static, all offered up with a slow-motion sense of restraint. That doesn't mean that something wasn't going to be thrown from the stage area into the audience.
