Back from tour and in fine form after fighting the elements across Western Canada, guitarist Dan Pitt and company (Alex Fournier on bass, Nick Fraser on drums plus Patrick Smith and Naomi McCarroll-Butler on woodwinds) tore it out in this homecoming romp. Celebrating the rease of Horizontal Depths, the group's second album, the ensemble moved through most of the album's pieces, exploring moody zones and blistering rockers like this set-opener.

Another evening of conversations from this grouping, with guitarist Nilan Perera getting some structures from Alex Fournier (double bass) and Rick Saks (drumkit). Nice textures and interplay throughout, sizzling even when not playing at a breakneck pace.

Another example of pianist Ananya Ganesh's quick establishment of community connections, this trio managed to present a couple performances and even do some recording to hopefully document this coming-together. Mixing Ganesh's piano and vocals with Alex Fournier's double bass (here leaning more on his pedalboard to set some moods), and Raph Roter's drumkit and water percussion, there were several unbleak zones surveyed over two sets.
Switching over to baritone guitar, Nilan Perera was joined for this set by Robin Buckley (percussion) and Jay Hay (sax) who pushed things into some hard funk territory.

With two guitar/bass/drum trios playing, this was a real chophouse of an evening. After lamenting that he had to follow Laun Phung's complex grooves, series host Nilan Perera took up his electric axe and proved he was no slouch, guiding his rhythm section through some gliding inquiries that pulled inspriations ranging from nimble West African licks to 'Tranes's laments.

The current State of Things calls for improvisation in the curation as well as performance, with some last-minute adjustments to the programme remixing the originally-programmed sets. Stepping in for Rob Clutton, Alex Fournier bravely undertook to stick to the originally-envisioned gameplan, playing a set of Nick Fraser's compositions. Having heard Clutton doing this a few times, it was interesting to see how Fournier brought a different sense of projection to the pieces, with a visceral physical commitment.

Nilan Perera's Synaptic Circus Sundays (now abbrev.'d to SynCirSundays) has returned to the Tranzac on the second Sunday of the month, bringing a variety of boundary-pushing soundmakers together. The current State of Things calls for improvisation in the curation as well as performance, with some last-minute adjustments to the programme remixing the originally-programmed sets. Double bassist Alex Fournier stepped in as a sub for Rob Clutton to present some solo sounds, and also acted as the glue between William Davison's electroacoustic bricolage (including saw, knife, fidget spinner, musical box, fake eyeball, slinky, spike, etc.) and Mike Hansen's prepared turntables. The sort of set where two of the musicians were seen tuning forks as instruments, there was some fine sawin' and tumblin' in effect.

Bumping Into... is a series of mini-chats with a variety of peeps that you might run into in some of our local music communities. (There's a bit of an intro and my thoughts behind the series here.)
How are you? Where are you?
I'm alright. Mostly just stirring around my apartment and keeping myself busy/amused however I can. I'm up at Eglinton W. just at the edge of the International Market neighborhood. The Caribbean food is fantastic up here. How are you?
What have you been up to since March or so?
It's been a mostly introspective time. Working on myself wherever I can. Lot of projects that have been started and sustained as well. Started with a list of exercises I put together to help with getting a better/more pliable grip on polyrhythms and that kind of language. Lot of exploring and understanding what I'm trying to do on my instrument in terms of improvising as well. Settled on the idea of a "cascading" or "tumbling" sound... whatever that means. Changed up my reading list to focus on a lot of critical theory and philosophy, so I've got a mountain of books on top of my dresser I want to get through. Released a trio album with some friends from Baltimore at the beginning of this. Been kinda hard to promote it and talk it up though. Haven't had the gusto for that kind of stuff lately.
Had an interlude in the early fall that kept me pretty busy with gigs actually. Triio played its first festival and I'm told we're invited back for next year! Lot of Jazz Manouche as well with Tak Arikushi. Recorded an album with Dan Pitt's Quintet. Started working on a theme-transcription project - namely Wayne Shorter's playing on Speak No Evil. Also been going over tunes friends have written - though I'm back to focusing on my own music for now. Got some good news from CCA that I'll likely announce soon too!
Have you found any new ways to do old things? How are you feeling about the shifts in how music is being made/shared/listened to?
Oh my gosh you should see my teaching from home setup. It gets pretty silly when you see what a double bass lesson looks like on my end. Had to learn a little about recording tech, which was no biggie. Truth be told I haven't been consuming a lot of new music. I feel like I had a lot on my shelf before all of this that I hadn't properly explored, so I've taken the time to listen more thoroughly to what I've picked up over the years. More reading than anything these days. Otherwise, not too many changes beyond remembering the mask when I go out.
Any works of art that have been a light for you in these times? Anything that's just been a good diversion?
Sam Rivers' "Fuchsia Swing Song" reminded me why I love jazz. Same with Jaki Byard's The Jaki Byard Experience, among a few other things that have been on the iPod (yes I still have one of those). The Ethics by Baruch Spinoza was a pretty incredible read. Been diving into philosophers that have come from his sphere of influence. Replaying Bloodborne and Doom Eternal too. The music/sound design for both are incredible.
How are you feeling about 2021?
Uuuuuhhhh... I get the feeling it's going to be another rocky year but at least it has a chance to have an upswing by the end, so at least we won't have to call it a trash-fire. Had a conversation with Michael Davidson that got me thinking about what we can contribute to our community/the world - quality over quantity and the like - and I get the feeling that that will be a focus for a lot of people, especially since everyone (and I'm saying this especially to myself) seemed stressed out from "the hustle" for such a long time. Still sorting that conversation out, but I feel like the year can end on a better note than expected if we're both engaged and checking in on each other. At very least I'm incredibly interested to hear everyone play again!
Anything else we'd chat about if we bumped into each other?
Always interested in hearing what shows you've been to/what else has been new. I'm terrible at remembering to talk to people when I'm at home but I suppose it has the benefit of giving you more to talk about in person, which I prefer anyway.
Host Nilan Perera constructed this evening to serve as a showcase for bass clarinetist Dr. Kathryn Ladano, who was presenting music from Masked, her second solo album — which was itself derived from the work done for her PhD thesis, "The Improvising Musician's Mask: Using Musical Instruments to Build Self-Confidence and Social Skills in Collective Free Improvisation". Some collective free improvisation was explored by this grouping that Perera assembled, first with some get-to-know-you duos that were followed by full quintet explorations. The flexible rhythm unit of Germaine Liu (percusssion), Alex Fournier (double bass) and Nilan Perera (electric guitar) created some frames for Ladano's bass clarinet as well as Jeff Burke's theremin and bassoon.

Nilan Perera's self-curated set at this SynapticCircus night saw him on electric guitar and joined by the rhythm section of Alex Fournier (double bass) and Phil Melanson (drumkit). The latter was especially fun to watch — in all of his recent work with quiet, subtle percussion, one can forget that he's still a helluva drummer — even if he's still taking things outside in sets like this when he, say, puts away his sticks and pulls out his garden trowels.

One cool thing about living in this town is that there are more cool gigs to go to than you could ever have time for. The corresponding downside is that you're going to miss some stuff — and due to those Tuesday night conflicts, it had been a while since I had checked in with the Ornate Presents series at The Tranzac. This night featured a couple sets from the wryly-named Bearrah Fawcett, a casual sort of jazzish group consisting of (at least for this show) Alex Fournier (double bass), Stefan Hegerat (percussion), Rob Grieve (guit) plus Madeline Ertel and Kaelin Murphy up front on trumpets. There was a game plan here, with the group tackling a half-dozen compositions, but there was also room left for some off-script moments as well.
[The next edition of Ornate Presents (on Tuesday, August 13th) features Mike DeiCont offering some solo bass sounds.]
This group, with Christine Duncan singing and a rhythm section of Jake Oelrichs and Alex Fournier, was originally put together and booked for this show by Justin Haynes; after his passing, the musicians decided to honour his artistic intention by going ahead with it, drafting in Jim Lewis to complete the group. As is perhaps a good way to proceed in the face of sad thoughts, the band played with fiercely-absurd joy. Taking a decidedly non-standard approach to some standards, Duncan would lurch into a song, the group catching the vibe and clattering and moaning behind her — an improvised hit parade filled with detours and asides.
This was also an appropriate night to formally unveil a commemorative plaque and painting on the piano that Justin Haynes donated to the space. Kudos to Ashley Urquhart and Alex Fournier for doing the legwork to make this happen — hopefully Justin's spirit will be remembered by all who get to play this piano.

The first Women From Space Festival saw four excellent concerts take place over the course of the International Women's Day weekend. Organized by Bea Labikova and Kayla Milmine, the festival felt like a really savvy gathering, always more than the sum of its parts and showcasing the depth of talent in the city's various creative music streams in a women-centred environment.
The night closed with a set from this improvising ensemble playing pianist Ashley Urquhart's compositions. The pieces leave a lot of room for the other members (Tara Kannangara on vox and trumpet, Patrick O'Reilly on guitar, Alex Fournier on double bass, and Aidan Sibley on trombone) to explore and drift, often pulling back into duos and trios given suble shadings by the remaining members.
[Three of this group's members will be playing with Triio (which is not a trio) at their CD launch at The Rex on Sunday, June 2nd.]
This self-curated night at Audiopollination saw the usual mix of textures and musical practices, including another encounter between Alex Fournier (double bass) and Heraclitus Akimbo (melodica, pocket synth, effects) alongside trombonist Alexander Whyte.

Rising jazz star Tara Kannangara had been on my list of people I was hoping to get out to play at TCB for a little while, so I was pleased to be informed after booking Alex Fournier for a set that he was bringing her along. The pair, who have worked together in a few different projects, had a tasty sense of interaction as they tackled improvisations and songs (including some Sondheim). Mixing trumpet and voice with Fournier's double bass, Kannangara left plenty of uncluttered space in the music, sending out some "positive basement" vibes.
[Alex Fournier will be back in Wenona's basement tomorrow night (Thursday, December 27th) alongside Mo Mitchell and Tak Arikushi in a Furniture Music show (before that series shifts to its new home on the 4th Tuesday of the month). Tara Kannangara will be performing at Burdock's Piano Fest on Sunday, January 27th. And meanwhile, the first Tuesday of January is New Year's Day, so TCB is making a rare shift to the second week and joining forces with Andrew Furlong's JAOIM series. We'll be co-presenting Lina Allemano's Titanium Riot plus McEachern/West/Zurawinski on January 8th. Not to be missed!]
Fun times to see this trio (with Karen Ng's reeds, Alex Fournier's double bass and Rob Grieve's guitar) back in action. There were no compositions this time out, just a beautifully-flowing series of improvisations as some random snapshots (icy harbours, vacuum cleaners, Hallowe'en costumes) were projected behind them as part of the night's slideshow entertainment.

It's a somewhat-infrequent occasion to see Alex Fournier (bass, banter), Stefan Hegerat (percussion) and Patrick O'Reilly (guitar) reconvene this trio, so it was fun to see 'em not only dipping into the old book of tunes but also tackling some newer pieces, such as this one from O'Reilly. Despite the implications of its name, this one takes off like The Ex stuck on a cell midway through "In C" — a testament to the flexibility of O'Reilley's recent "postcard" pieces.
Another chance to see visiting clarinetist Manabu Kitada in action, this time spotlighting some of his compositions with a crack lineup of locals, including Alex Fournier on double bass, Bea Labikova on also, Lina Allemano on trumpet and Nick Fraser on drums. There were some tasty rambunctious stretches here, but the ballads were the standout, with the crew aligning nicely to bring a light touch to Kitada's pieces.
Visiting reed-ist Manabu Kitada got a chance to mix in with many players on the local scenes over an extended summer visit — in no small part thanks to bassist Alex Fournier's many connections. Fournier was also on hand to perform on this set, and the trio was completed by Alexei Orechin on guitar, who later closed out the night with a solo set from his No Seas project.

Founded as a blog about one curmudgeon's love affair with the em dash, Mechanical Forest Sound has grown to become a community-based archive of local musical culture. Assuming that "independent music" isn't just boys with guitars and "culture" isn't just some sort of pageant, MFS is an investigation of a wide range of artists, reflecting on concerts as shared experiences, acts of citizenship and a chance to get down — fuzzy photographs and clear-sounding original live recordings a specialty.
Current manifestations of this project include Track Could Bend, a monthly concert series featuring "improvised music and weird rock offshoots", presented in a casual environment.
At one point I wrote full-on concert reviews, and for longer I thought I would catch up and write about shows in the past. But these days, because of, y'know, life, do not expect much in the way of full show reviews — but live recordings with blurbs will be posted as quickly after the fact as is feasible.
