Ben Dwyer/Josh Cole/Emily Steinwall/Ewan Farncombe - untitled #2

Tuesday, February 25, 2020

Recording: Dwyer/Cole/Steinwall/Farncombe

Artist: Ben Dwyer/Josh Cole/Emily Steinwall/Ewan Farncombe

Songs: two untitled pieces*

Recorded at The Tranzac's Southern Cross Lounge (Karen Ng Presents), January 22, 2020.

Ben Dwyer/Josh Cole/Emily Steinwall/Ewan Farncombe - untitled #1

Ben Dwyer/Josh Cole/Emily Steinwall/Ewan Farncombe - untitled #2

The previous couple times I had seen Ben Dwyer playing it was on double bass, so this served as a reminder how capable he is on saxophone as well. And also as a composer, as this was a set of new pieces he's working on, dwelling in a sweetly-melancholic, atmospheric ballad-y zone. ("Is this a suite?" on audience member asked after the first few pieces. "it's not a suite, it's a... vibe," Dwyer responded.) Flanked by Emily Steinwall on tenor up front, the saxes were given a frame by Josh Cole's bass and Ewan Farncombe's keyboards, unrushed by percussive interference.

* Remind me to update this when these pieces get names!

Recording: Brouwer/Dwyer/Ng

Artist: Ryan Brouwer/Ben Dwyer/Karen Ng

Songs: [excerpt from first piece] + [excerpt from third piece] (feat. Anh Phung)

Recorded at Wenona Lodge (Music Hosted by Karen Ng), November 19, 2019.

Ryan Brouwer/Ben Dwyer/Karen Ng/Anh Phung - [excerpt from third piece]

Ryan Brouwer/Ben Dwyer/Karen Ng - [excerpt from first piece]

Emerging from bassist Ben Dwyer's quiet flutters, the meditatively-dreamy intensity that this set launched itself with seemed to take the musicians by surprise, though Ryan Brouwer (on flugelhorn) and Karen Ng (on alto sax) drilled into the zone for a spell before letting things swell up. For the final piece in the set, they called up Anh Phung, whose flute added some nice little curls of sound to close things out.

Recording: Nomad Wind Ensemble

Artist: Nomad Wind Ensemble

Song: [last piece]

Recorded at Ratio ("Somewhere There Presents..."), November 26, 2014.

Nomad Wind Ensemble - [last piece, part 1]

Nomad Wind Ensemble - [last piece, part 2]

Nomad Wind Ensemble - [last piece, part 3]

Joining in as out-of-town guests on a night put together by Somewhere There, this quartet for wind instruments is an offshoot of Montréal "emo rock-jazz" combo Nomad, here with Ted Crosby (bass clarinet), Mike Bjella (tenor sax), Simon Millerd (trumpet), and Ben Dwyer (alto sax). Given the interplay and extended tasty gliding, this final excursion from their set is worth hearing in full, but for easier navigation, I've put it up here in parts. [It doesn't look like there's much online to see/hear from the wind side-project, but you can check out Nomad's album here, and you can see these folks (together or separately) down at this end of the 401 fairly regularly.]
