Recording: Double Group Continuous Improvisation

Artist: styrofoamNosebleedPrincess/Mira Martin-Gray/David Parker/Andrew Finlay Stewart + Del Stephen/Patrick O'Reilly/James Bailey/Tyson Headon

Songs: [two excerpts]

Recorded at The Tranzac's Southern Cross Lounge (Audiopollination 10th Anniversary Bash: Double Group Continuous Improvisation), December 4, 2022.

styrofoamNosebleedPrincess/Mira Martin-Gray/David Parker/Andrew Finlay Stewart - [first group excerpt]

Del Stephen/Patrick O'Reilly/James Bailey/Tyson Headon - [second group excerpt]

A round number anniversary is always worth celebrating, and more so for this labour of love devoted to creative expression and community building. Kudos to Mike Lynn for putting in the work to keep Audiopollination going for a decade — definitely worth celebrating with a slice of pie and a crowded room in the Southern Cross.

After the "regular" Audiopollination sets, Lynn turned the remainder of the afternoon over to collaborators exploring parallel paths in community cacophony. This portion brought back a concept that Del Stephen has been deploying [del-ploying?] and tweaking for a while now, under a couple different names: basically inviting a large group of musicians, and then making a random draw to sort them into small ensembles — in this case, eight musicians playing as two quartets. The "continuous" element came in the transition when the players picked their moments one-by-one to depart/enter the stage at the halfway mark. The first group here (styrofoamNosebleedPrincess, amplified objects; Mira Martin-Gray, guitar; David Parker, guitar; Andrew Finlay Stewart, violin) explored some aggressive jangling while the second (Del Stephen, octapad; Patrick O'Reilly, Game Boy and pedals; James Bailey, trumpet and crutch; Tyson Headon, bass) casually backed into a sort of bitcrushed Bitches Brew vibe.

Recording: Splendid Industries' Quartets

Artist: Splendid Industries Presents: Erin Corbett/Tyson Headon/Paul Geldart/Curtis Whittaker/Sinéad Bermingham/Michael Palumbo

Songs: [excerpts from three quartet improvisations]

Recorded at Wenona Lodge (Track Could Bend #73), November 1, 2022.

Erin Corbett/Tyson Headon/Paul Geldart/Curtis Whittaker - [excerpt]

Paul Geldart/Sinéad Bermingham/Michael Palumbo/Erin Corbett - [excerpt]

Curtis Whittaker/Sinéad Bermingham/Michael Palumbo/Tyson Headon - [excerpt]

For this TCB, I asked Tyson Headon, who organizes things over at Splendid Industries, to put something together. He obliged by wrangling a half-dozen musicians, several of whom were meeting for the first time. The night was divided into two halves, first with each player getting the chance to participate in two shorter quartet performances before the whole crew played together in the second half. Sounds ranged from sputtery spirit invocations to modular lounge jams as the crew worked out some shared spaces.

For the record, the whole group consisted of:

  • Erin Corbett - Modular Synth
  • Michael Palumbo - Modular Synth
  • Sinéad Bermingham - Harp/FX
  • Tyson Headon - Bass/FX
  • Paul Geldart - Electronic Drums/Percussion
  • Curtis Whittaker - Acoustic Drums/Percussion

You can check out some video from each of these mini-sets over on the TCB youtube playlist:

Recording: Small Chaos

Artist: Small Chaos

Song: [set 1, second piece]

Recorded at The Tranzac (Southern Cross Lounge), March 24, 2022.

Small Chaos - [set 1, second piece]

This quartet brought some low-end intensity to the Southern Cross, with percussionist Curtis Whittaker knitting together Tyson Headon's bass, Alex Sales' baritone saxophone and Birol Edrogan's didgeridoo. (Modular synthesist Michael Palumbo was absent from this show, but one could get a sense of how he could find a lot of space to twist wires in the higher frequencies.) Groove exploration was the main point of departure over two sets — often jet-propelled, but my fave was this more restrained foray, which found nice pockets for all the instruments to settle into.

Recording: Infinite Monotremes

Artist: Infinite Monotremes

Songs: [first piece, in two parts]

Recorded at Wenona Lodge (Track Could Bend #55), October 1, 2019.

Infinite Monotremes - [first piece, part 1]

Infinite Monotremes - [first piece, part 2]

This shape-shifting improvising collective sometime does audio-visual work but limited themselves to sonic explorations this time out, bringing together Curtis Whittaker (percussion), Tyson Headon (bass), Kieran Maraj (electronics), Danielle Fernandes (saxophone) and Brent O'Toole (guitar) — sometimes drifting along, sometimes keenly watching each other in playful jousting.

[Track Could Bend will be back at Wenona on Tuesday, December 3rd, with sets from Daniel Pencer, No Angels Dancing, and Patrick O'Reilly.]
