Recording: Toronto Improvisors Orchestra

Artist: Toronto Improvisors Orchestra

Song: [2nd set, 2nd piece excerpt]

Recorded at The Tranzac (Southern Cross Lounge), November 10, 2024.

Toronto Improvisors Orchestra - [2nd set, 2nd piece excerpt]

Although the TIO will play freely when the numbers are low (or when the mood otherwise strikes), when there's a larger group the use of conduction leads the sounds to interesting places. Here, Eugene Martynec was having some computer trouble and took a break from troubleshooting to wrangle the ensemble, pulling things together to move from long tones to pointillistic daubs.

Recording: Eugene Martynec & Brian Abbott

Artist: Eugene Martynec & Brian Abbott

Song: [excerpt]

Recorded at Gerrard Art Space (Faster Presents: Summer Sound Explorations), July 21, 2018.

Eugene Martynec & Brian Abbott - [excerpt]

On this FASTER-curated night of electronic and acoustic sounds, both halves of the duo split off to perform with separate sparring partners. Eugene Martynec (MIDI instruments) and Brian Abbott (guitar) brought a different temperament to the proceedings, playing a microtonal duo where the acoustic and electronic sounds melded nicely together.

[FASTER is presenting another excellent night of creative sounds at Gerrard Art Space tomorrow night (September 15th) with visiting improvisers Carl Ludwig Hübsch/Pierre-Yves Martel/Philip Zoubek as well as the ever-quieter Montréal/Toronto force of MagicEyeImage.]

Recording: Davison/Gane/Pottie/Martynec

Artist: William Davison/Mark Gane/Ambrose Pottie/Eugene Martynec

Song: [excerpt]

Recorded at Array Space (Audiopollination #53.1), April 8, 2017.

William Davison/Mark Gane/Ambrose Pottie/Eugene Martynec - [excerpt]

Plenty of veteran savvy on stage, as William Davison crafted some scratchy noises from his table of bricabrac while Ambrose Pottie (taking a night off from rehearsals for Crash Vegas' comeback shows) added feedback and occasional rhythmic patter. Gene Martynec's electroacoustic soundscapes hovered in front of that while Mark Gane (the other M from Martha and the Muffins) added some guitar widdle-waddle, including some vocal outbursts courtesy of the somewhat-infamous Miku pedal.

[You can also check out some footage of this set over at Audiopollination's youtube page. Audiopollination is on hiatus until September, when its self-curated series will resume.]

Recording: Toronto Improvisors Orchestra + The Element Choir

Artists: Toronto Improvisors Orchestra + The Element Choir

Songs: [excerpts from three improvisations]

Recorded at Array Space, March 19, 2017.

Toronto Improvisors Orchestra feat. The Element Choir - [excerpt]

A special night convened by the TIO to pay tribute to The Element Choir and its leader Christine Duncan. Both groups showed up in force — I counted sixteen or so musicians and about twice that many choristers, although there were a few people that were members of both. In the first half, each ensemble performed on its own, and then after the break the whole conglomeration performed together.

The key question for large improvising ensembles is how to keep everyone on the same page and to provide a shape that goes beyond heaping one thing on top of another, and both groups have found a solution in their own similar conducting systems. Eugene Martynec and Christine Duncan led their ensembles in the first half, but Duncan held court in the second, at first leaving one group to improvise while she led the other before (as heard here) attempting to guide the whole thing.

Recording: Zach Clark/Jonathan Adjemian/Glen Hall/Eugene Martynec

Artist: Zach Clark/Jonathan Adjemian/Glen Hall/Eugene Martynec

Songs: [an excerpt, in three parts]

Recorded at The Tranzac's Southern Cross Lounge ("troubleshooting~ v5"), September 2, 2015.

Zach Clark/Jonathan Adjemian/Glen Hall/Eugene Martynec - [excerpt, part 1]

Zach Clark/Jonathan Adjemian/Glen Hall/Eugene Martynec - [excerpt, part 2]

Zach Clark/Jonathan Adjemian/Glen Hall/Eugene Martynec - [excerpt, part 3]

As has become a troubleshooting custom, SuperCollider rider and past performer Zach Clark returned to curate this instalment of the series. In lieu of a full solo set, he lead off the night's final team effort on his own before the night's other performers joined in for a group improvisation. It turned out to have a tasty mix of textures and it's worth presenting a bit of a longer chunk here.

[The next troubleshooting night will be Wednesday, October 7th at The Tranzac.]

Recording: Glen Hall and Eugene Martynec

Artist: Glen Hall and Eugene Martynec

Song: [excerpt]

Recorded at The Tranzac's Southern Cross Lounge ("troubleshooting~ v5"), September 2, 2015.

Glen Hall and Eugene Martynec - [excerpt]

Leading off the this instalment of troubleshooting's monthly laptop-based improvisation night were two veterans of the local scene. Glen Hall is known as a wind player and writer/arranger besides being a laptop-based electroacousticist; Eugene Martynec (with a legendary background as a producer and session musician) is leader of the Toronto Improvisers Orchestra. Operating with idiosyncratic software — respectively, Kyma X and Midi Ax — the pair were in full control of their shifting soundfield. The first section (reproduced here) had hints of gamelan abstraction while second half saw some tasty patches turn Hall's sax into something like a gauzy EWI.

[The next troubleshooting night will be Wednesday, October 7th at The Tranzac.]
