Recording: Joyful Joyful

Artist: Joyful Joyful

Song: Oh Sinner

Recorded at 918 Bathurst, July 26, 2022.

Joyful Joyful - Oh Sinner

Joyful Joyful found an appropriately church-like spot for the local celebration of the release of their début self-titled full-length, which included some excellent visuals from Joel Elliott. Given the album's long gestation, their repertoire contains a number of equally-worthy pieces like this one, so there should be no drop-off in quality when album #2 rolls around.

Recording: Joyful Joyful

Artist: Joyful Joyful

Song: [parts 2 + 3]*

Recorded at Wenona Lodge (Track Could Bend #48), March 5, 2019.

Joyful Joyful - [parts 2 + 3]

Cormac Culkeen and Dave Grenon's electro-folk drone-hymns are meticulously-constructed pieces, so it was kind of the duo to offer a glimpse into their creative process with a set of less-structured improvisations. They were still characterised by the stately build and meticulous loop-craft seen in their other work, and with the same serene expressions of joy and triumph.

* I will add in proper titles if I hear that these sketches have 'em!

[Joyful Joyful will be performing at Teenage Dirtbagz Podcast's CARCHELLA 2019, at The Hideout on Saturday, May 25th. Track Could Bend is back at Wenona on Tuesday (May 7th), featuring sounds from Primate Pyramid, Reknee and Kerhachne.]

Song: At the Bit

Recorded at The Gladstone Hotel's Ballroom (Long Winter, Vol. 7.3), January 4, 2019.

Joyful Joyful - At the Bit

This night at Long Winter started with a fab discovery. Cormac Culkeen and Dave Grenon's mix of ancient and contemporary drones — folk structures floating atop pedal-enabled electronic soundbeds — is haunting and more than a little church-y, in the sense that you could well imagine these sounds swirling upward into some distant, darkened arched ceiling.

[I dug this band so much I booked them to play Track Could Bend (Tuesday, March 5th), where they'll loosen their song structures with some improvised explorations. Meanwhile, Long Winter Vol. 7.5 will be at Workman Arts on Friday, March 29th. Lineup Announcement Coming Soon!]
