A new pairing with Brian Fog (recently making some waves at local noise shows) and Phil Hamilton (formerly operating as Beard Closet, currently performing solo as Density Creep), the former's drumkit clatter provided the latter with some structure and momentum to tear loose, exorcising some existential demons. Bracing stuff, served in a concentrated dose.

Through the underground noise samizdat network, I was contacted by Halifax noise artist Panties, who was going to be in town just after the new year and was looking for a T.O. gig. Promising to set up, perform and tear down in a five-minute window, this was easy to add to the evening and everything was delivered as promosed. With a chain of feedbacking DS-1's, there were secretly some pleasing oscillations lurking under the howling chaos.

On some other day of the year you might find Sara Constant (flutes, processing), Yang Chen (percussion), and Andrew Noseworthy (electric guitar) playing together — but they would not be SOUP. SOUP is a seasonally-specific supergroup dedicated to creating "soupy tunes" to celebrate the new year. And also to provide snacks! Sharing some homemade Japanese-Canadian treats, Sara Constant convened this trio to explore warm liquid textures and invoke some positive vibes for the year ahead.

Following on some group drones, this Tranzac edition of the Audiopollination series was a nice opportunity was to gather together with friends for some end-of-the-year festivities. Some truly excellent work in this middle set with three performers finding a sympathetic meeting place right off the bat. Jamie Eriksen's sax and Zoë Alexis-Abrams' cello wove together nicely while Victor O's percussion put a bow on things.

• Long Winter has announced the opener of their 2024 season with a “Cozy Chats” edition of the series this Friday (January 12) at The Tranzac. No musical performers have been announced, but "audiences can expect a series of adventurous discussions and interactions touching on topics of cultural production, community, and sustainability, with an eye toward new models and possible futures." PWYC/$20 advance tickets available, all ages as always. (And note that the season will continue with events on February 23 and March 15.)

Cosmic Homeostasis XXII - Stimulant Sister Comedown Cowboy [excerpt]

With the regular fifth-Sunday-of-the-month afternoon timeslot reserved for NYE prep, Cosmic Homeostasis took over the Southern Cross for a rare evening drone meetup. That might have brought on some slightly more rambunctious zones, but things were still relatively contained, with a really nice mix of acoustic and electronic sounds. Rather a pleasant way to gather with friends and celebate the turning of the year.

The Ryan Driver Quintet - I Didn't Know What Time It Was

Another evening of ballads from Ryan Driver and company, this time in quintet mode, sans Michael Davidson's vibes. The remaining members found lots of space to explore the deserted dancefloors and broken hearts in Driver's binder of standards, ambling along as required and working upwards into a couple gently-chaotic crescendos.

The timing usually doesn't work out for me, so I haven't been on hand to watch the evolution of the old Aurochs timeslot in the way it deserves. Following pianist Ali Berkok's departure from town, the remaining members maintained momentum with a series of shows where they were joined by guest performers — but more recently the trio has put things on a more permanent footing with the adoption of the moniker Molehill.

That still doesn't tie the musicians down to strictly-defined roles, and I was told that this particular alignment (Jake Oelrichs, drumkit; Mike Smith, electric bass; Pete Johnston, electric guitar) was seeing its first outing. Sonically, this didn't much resemble Aurochs; nor did it atavistically revert to many Muskox modes. (Though with Michael Kaler in the crowd, there was some discussion as to whether Smith, who has generally handling electronics at these shows might be invoking his inner Phil Lesh with the bass back in his hands.) There were a lot of zones explored over two sets, from insta-ECM intricacies to thorny postrock jammage.
