Recording: Doug Tielli + Friends

Recorded at The Tranzac's Southern Cross Lounge (Cosmic Country for Communists), February 9, 2023.

Doug Tielli + Friends - With Body and Soul

Doug Tielli + Friends - Hello Stranger

It's not bluegrass, the experts remind us, if there's a drumkit on stage, so let's maybe call this Cosmic Country for Communists one-off grouping bluegrass-adjacent. Doug Tielli brought a list of favourite songs to sing, backed by an ace band put together by series host Kurt Newman (here on dobro) that included Harry Bartlett (guit), Chris Adriaanse (double bass), Blake Howard (drums), and some coaxed-from-the-audience contributions from Logan McNeil (mandolin). Tielli's list of tunes drew from the bluegrass/country axis, but also extended to include Townes Van Zandt and Mary Margaret O'Hara.

Recorded at Wenona Lodge (Track Could Bend #76), February 7, 2023.

Adversarial Networks - [excerpt]

I was eager to get a chance to hear this quartet, mostly because it involved some familiar faces making sound in a different way. Combining the talents of Caleb Klager (modular synthesizer/drum machines), Chris Pruden (keyed synthesizer), Luan Phung (electric guitar), and David Lipson (audio-reactive projections), this was no coffee-shop "jazz", instead heading down a dystopian highway into dark electronica, suggestive of wires and circuits slowly taking over their hosts, overpowering their senses, and inserting some malicious code.

You can check out some footage from this set over on youtube:

[Track Could Bend is back at Wenona on Tuesday, March 7th, with two amazing trios: international sensations Jasper Stadhouders/Lori Freedman/Allison Cameron, plus Marilyn Yogarajah's Tree-Oh with Steve Dillon (Lovewizard) + Lucas Finkeldey.]

Xicada - [second section]

A long-awaited visitation to TCB (that was originally being planned pre-pandemic), Ilyse Krivel brought some hypnotic, dark ambient sounds, which are now emerging under the name Xicada (and pushed their way into some propulsive zones as heard here). The high-tech, ableton-based sonics matched well with some lower-tech visuals from Escote, deploying some old-fashioned liquid displacement swirls on a slide projector.

Holy heck, was the Inyrdisk winding-down celebration seven years ago already? How is that even possible? I remember the foggy windows in that storefront gallery space pretty well... and also, Fahmid tells me that we first met on that night, which is pretty cool. If your IYD CR-r's haven't succumbed to digital rot, I suggest puling a couple out and giving 'em a spin this week!

Cosmic Homeostasis XVIII - The Ways We Unravel [excerpt]

Cosmic Homeostasis XVIII - Space [edited excerpt]

The year's first Cosmic Homeostasis gathering (which happens when there's a fifth Sunday in a month) brought out a robust crowd, with twenty (or so) musicians taking over the perimeter of the Southern Cross and generating some sonic drift zones. A real nice mix of acoutic and electronic sounds, and ranging from some louder zones into quieter interplay.

The participants this time out were:

  • Marilyn - various percussion, singing bowls, namer-of-things
  • Philip Hamilton - guitar, box w/ a string and llama toenails
  • Ron Blake - ipad apps
  • Scott M2 - Animoog
  • Mira Martin-Gray - mini synth, mini theremin
  • Yasmine E - pocket piano, various percussion, rainmaker
  • Adrian Russouw - violin
  • Del Stephen - keyboard synth + cassettes
  • Sophie Jaworski - wooden frog
  • Paul Newman - tenor saxophone
  • Patrick O'Reilly - Volca FM/effects
  • Rod Campbell - trumpet
  • Todd Macdonald - mandolin/Mood
  • Hilary Martin - singing bowl
  • Myfawny Ashmore - singing bowl
  • Michael Lynn - bass + stuff
  • Sterling + Ian - Atari junk console
  • Rob Cruickshank - electronics + resonator
  • Heraclitus Akimbo - synths, etc.

It's tough to get that many folks in the frame, but most of them make an appearance in this footage you can see over on youtube:

And, of course, you can also listen to the whole performance over on bandcamp (and, if you'd like, support the collective's future works with a purchase!):

Recording: Titanium Bloop

Artist: Titanium Bloop

Song: [1st set, 2nd piece]

Recorded at The Tranzac (Southern Cross Lounge), January 24, 2023.

Titanium Bloop - [1st set, 2nd piece]

With Ryan Driver out of town, what would have been a "regular" Titanium Riot gig saw this one-off reformulation, with Mike Smith (who processes sounds in the duo Bloop with trumpeter Lina Allemano) sitting in alongside the rhythm section of Rob Clutton and Nick Fraser. The result brought out elements of both groups, with the Titanium Riot blurp-beat lurch cross-pollinating with stereofied sound treatments. After the first piece, there was some friendly argument on stage as to whether the group should, in fact, have been called "Blooptanium Riot", which can be added to the list of open-ended questions this encounter produced.

Wenderly Park feat. Marilyn Yogarajah - [last section]

Another in a (hopefully continuing) series of encounters between electroacousticians Wenderly Park and special guests, this set saw some piano and trumpet sounds from Marilyn Yogarajah recieve Joe Strutt's electronic tratments while Fuzzy Nibesh ran frequency interference.

Rod Campbell/FuZzy/%%30%30 - [excerpt from 2nd piece]

This cross-generational trio, which came together as an ephemeral emergence at Audiopollination in December enjoyed playing together enough to set up a second encounter. Rod Campbell (trumpet/voice) was joined by Fahmid "Fuzzy" Nibesh (percussion, electronics) as well as percussionist Colin C., known by the browser-breaking moniker %%30%30. The latter has been making his mark for the past while as an avid listener at local improvised shows, and has lately been slipping into more performances. He added some found percussive objects (bicycle rim, air pump, metal rod, etc.) to most of a deconstructed drumkit as the trio found some space to drift and rattle eogether.

Monday Roundup #108

Community notes:

  • A very cool event at The Music Gallery on Thursday, "Grants?!?!" (the title capturing the confusion/exasperation many of us feel on putting any thought into the subject) offers "a non-judgemental space to ask questions, voice your worries, and find like minded artists" with a presentation from Jason Doell followed by a Q&A with Jason, David Dacks and Sanjeet Takhar. Free with RSVP.
  • And meanwhile, while on the topic of The Music Gallery, let's all pause here and raise a hearty cheer to David Dacks, following the news that he'll be stepping down as the organization's Executive Director. From his tenure as Artistic Director to his time spent more behind the scenes, David was always welcoming of this blog's work documenting our community — which even lead to me getting some peeks behind the scenes, as recordist for the Departures Series, a bit of curation, some community/history work, and a stint on the Artistic Advisory Council. All of that gave me a chance to watch David in action from several angles, so I feel confident in saying that The Music Gallery is far stronger and wiser as an institution for the work he did, and whatever comes next will surely also be enriching.

A welcome return for this quintet, filling in in Colin Fisher's Musica Universalis timeslot. Josh Cole (double bass), Brodie West (saxophone/clarinet), Phil Melanson (percussion) and Andrew Zukerman (buchla easel/tapes) were joined for part of the first set by the youngest audience member, which fit right in with their own moody outbursts and cackles of delight.

Family Ravine - unknown

On recordings, this "abstracted folk" project a solo endeavour from Kevin Cahill, but this live outing saw things further abstracted in a duo formation with some synthy loops from James A. Toth in the backgroud to give Cahill's guitar (and occasional kalimba) room to float.
