#mfs15 playlist: Del Stephen

MFS has turned fifteen! My introductory thoughts on this landmark can be found here, but long story short: I asked some folks from the MFS community to help me celebrate by picking some selections from the archives, and possibly sharing some thoughts or stories.

Today's list is from Del Stephen.

i'm very glad to be participating in this 15-year anniversary celebration of a real good thing: talking about mechanical forest sound (MFS). i've said it many times before, to various people who enjoy music, as well as joe strutt himself, and still i worry that it hasn't been said enough just how immensely valuable MFS is. as a fellow sound recording archivist, i have to believe that the kind of (life's!) work that joe has been doing all these years with MFS is the kind that will drastically increase in value as time goes on, just like so many of the recordings/posts on the site already have, i would say. honestly, i'd even be willing to say that it's thanks to archives like MFS that certain events will eventually become what we consider to be positively 'historic' (and i've touched on this a little bit in 1 of my selections). so here i am wondering aloud and inviting joe to respond when it suits him: let us know what we can do to help ensure MFS continues to serves the community (+ extended community) for years to come. thank you joe strutt for your continued devotion and for being my friend.
see below for some long-winded (as per usual) scribbled notes on 5 selections from the archives. the common thread is that i happened to deeply enjoy being at each of them. next birthday party i'll pick a few that i did not attend (there are so many that i've experienced solely through joe's recorded excerpts).

Zacht Automaat - Lay Lady Lay

Recorded at Matt Durant Studio (Feast In The East 64), September 23, 2017.

this was the best! matt durant's studio is/was quite far away from the apartment i lived at the time; i recall deciding to take the long way there to properly charge up for this show (a straight queen street car from 1 end of the line to the other...all the way to the depot, wow!). it was a packed house for feast in the east. and yummy food- maybe there was a samosa or 2 left by the time i arrived (late, but just in time for this set by 1 of my favourites). listening back today, i'm still bobbing my head in every direction! i love when music makes me laugh because of how good it is, especially at a show, and i definitely laughed a lot at this 1. colin fisher blew a hole in the ceiling with his saxophone and grasshopper was all over the place with his camcorder. 'lay lady lay' to end the set made me feel happy; it was a sweet interpretation of the tune and a wonderful time. i remember 1 of the first things i noticed upon arriving was seeing what i presumed to be a couple of joe's recorders positioned up on a fireplace mantle(?) or some sort of shelf on a wall opposite the stage. it was a real good and safe spot, and i was glad to prop my own portable tape recorder right up there too. thank you zacht automaat for always leaving everything out there on the court and for defending your championships approximately once a year.

Karen Ng - [excerpt]

Recorded at a house party, November 2, 2019.

this was up around dufferin/davenport in the basement of andrew finlay stewart's, a great friend and creative partner of mine. it was a party and then there'd be music. a lot of people huddled up in this tiny living room (or at least it felt tiny for the amount of people that had filled it), without being able to make such a choice, i happened to be sat right in front of karen ng's decided 'stage' and there was nowhere for me to run. so i sat there and enjoyed this set very much, no choice (and no choice necessary) but to welcome the warm sonic embrace/blast/whispers of her saxophone. i remember there were a lot of friends, friends of friends, and friends of friends of friends in attendance. the next time that i witnessed karen playing a solo set was the complete opposite: alone on the couch in the kitchen area of arrayspace while her and the rest of the audience sat on the other side of the closed door. a story for another time. thank you karen ng for every note and for always being real.

Off World - unknown

Recorded at Ratio (Off World LP 1 Release Weekend – Night 3), October 23, 2016.

i went to this show by myself and didn't know anybody that was there, at least not personally, as i knew a bunch of local artists in attendance but they surely didn't know who i was. i recognized joe though, which indicated that i was indeed in the right place at the right time. just a few minutes into the off world set, i fell asleep on the floor (or on some cushion) and ended up drifting in and out of sleep multiple times throughout the show. i have a funny memory of joe chuckling as he noticed me waking up in a somewhat startled state at 1 point before passing out again. and unless i have it mixed up with the only other time i attended a show at ratio, i also have a vivid memory of seeing mike smith in the kitchen, who i also hadn't formally met at that time, but who offered me a friendly smile. thank you sandro perri and lorenz peter for the off world dreaming and for every song (if you noticed me sleeping during your set i hope i did not offend).

Orechin/Fraser - unknown

Recorded at Wenona Lodge (Track Could Bend #52), July 2, 2019.

i just loved this set by alexei orechin and nick fraser at track could bend so much- i guess enough to still remember it 5 years later. it was hot in that basement, and probably thunderstormed earlier in the day as i noticed it always did (Without fail) every 1st tuesday of the month for a long time. i was really blissing out in my seat and remember having 1 of those moments where i was moving/swaying in body and mind. seriously hard to believe the piece was only 12 or 13 minutes - felt like a lifetime. this was also back when 241 pizza at bloor/havelock had 2 slices + a pop for $1.75 and a big window banner so the whole neighbourhood knew what was up. people would travel from other parts of the city just for the deal. and listening back now, that perfect splash when nick fraser enters the fold is like opening the can of pop and taking that first sip (i'm not really a pop drinker, but it was more expensive if you just bought the 2 slices on its own). thank you alexei orechin and nick fraser for this particularly good time and for often playing well with others.

Nicole Rampersaud - [excerpt]

Recorded at The Baby G (Track Could Bend #39), June 5, 2018.

i can't tell you how many times i've brought up this set in conversation since it happened. i recall there only being a handful of us in attendance, though i could be wrong, and it should be stated that this (obviously) has nothing to do with the incredible music that nicole rampersaud offered us on this date. that being said, i bring up this (possible) fact because over the years i've come to realize that some of my favourite concerts are ones where at some point during the set, while listening to the music, i catch myself looking around the room, noticing each individual audience member, then drawing my visual attention back to the artist, and thinking something like "hah, this is wild, we are the lucky ones!" - i wonder if you do this too? of course there are a ton of shows that come to mind where this has happened, and it seems to me that whether these gigs are recorded/archived or not truly makes no difference to the fact that in another world or in front of another audience or at a different time in history they might be considered 'legendary'. anyway, i'm rambling! thank you nicole rampersaud for all your music and for your kindness.

Monday Roundup #130

In memoriam Ted Phillips:

  • Shortly after I had wrapped up this roundup last night, word came through about Ted Phillips' sudden and unexpected passing, so please forgive me for a few hastily-written words here. Ted was a sui generis figure in local music circles, seen most often at shows investigating curious sounds and novel ways of generating them. He was also a sound artist with a sneaky sense of humour in finding sound-sources to granulate and process in performance. Once, several years back, he gave me some very useful advice in wringing the best sound out of less-than-ideal field recordings, and I still think of one of my workflows for dealing with recordings of very quiet performances as the "Ted Phillips treatment".
It is also weird and poignant for me to acknowledge Ted in this space, as when we'd cross paths, he'd almost inevitably give thanks and praise for these listings and in my mind he was always part of my perceived audience of people that would actually pay attention to these entries. Despite his particular ways, he'd never hesitate to offer a word of encouragement to those he felt deserved it.
I am sure there will be opportunities for a proper sharing of memories, but while the city's bike lanes stay a little bit quieter this week, let's keep an eye out for each other.

Community notes:

  • Support emerging composers! Shoe Box Composers Concerts "was founded to create more opportunities for emerging composers to write pieces for diverse instrumentations and hear them played live." They have a show coming up at The Tranzac (see listings below), but to keep things moving + growing have also started a gofundme to keep things sustainable, so support them if you are able. Hat tip to Madeleine Ertel, who is doing the organizational legwork here.
  • DRONE:KLUB is returning to the Long & McQuade Clinic Hall this week (Thursday, July 13th) for their last event until the fall. "Droners, Friends and Audience are all welcome for this free indoor event. Masks are encouraged. Bring your instrument, wires and adapters."
  • Meanwhile, perhaps interestingly, my initiative to try get informed about some of the shows that I've been missing for my listings has had underwhelming results, so I'll mention this here once more: if you have a cool show coming up that I should know about, please fill out this form so I can add it when I'm putting a future roundup together!

Zacht Automaat - Lay Lady Lay

The last blast of a summer reprise made for a sweaty night in the charming Matt Durant Studio — home recently to the always-roving Feast in the East series. This annual-ish appearance from Zacht Automaat had more space echo and less taishogoto than last time I saw 'em, but was otherwise classic ZA all down the line. Colin Fisher pitched in some sax as usual, but the selections this time are from the trio parts of the set — including a new one from their heap o' covers as the set closer.

[Feast in the East returns to Matt Durant Studio for a Harvest Stew of electronic sounds on Saturday, November 18th, with sets from Off World, Egyptrixx, New Chance and Brigitte Bardon't.]

Zacht Automaat - Night of the Assassin

Bassist Michael McLean didn't come back to this side of the Atlantic this summer, so this was the first in-the-flesh performance for ZA since last year's seasonal show. As usual, though, physical separation doesn't keep the band from working, and there was a whole set of new material, mixed in with a few covers. In line with the work he's been doing solo and with Fake Humans in that time, Carl Didur brought along his taishogoto, which he bowed at the start of the first selection here.

With Didur also able to cover the basslines with the taishogoto, McLean could shift over to guitar, taking vox as well on a run through Pink Floyd's "Lucifer Sam". There was further guitar chaos courtesy of special guest Grasshopper on a set-closing blowout version of Les Rallizes Dénudés' "Night of the Assassin" (which the band had previously essayed on their covers tape) that could have followed its pilfered bassline down some sort of infinite rabbit hole. It might be a year again before we get a chance to see ZA play, but expect new recordings to emerge sooner than that.

Videographer Brandon Caswell Douglas was on the scene and used some of my sounds in his documentation of the night.]

Song: Facelift (Soft Machine cover)

Recorded at Double Double Land, December 27, 2015.

Zacht Automaat - Facelift

On the eve of adding a new album to their stellar discography, ZA's semi-annual live congregation saw the stage quartet (with project mainmen Michael McLean and Carl Didur joined by Louis Percival and Colin Fisher) stretching out a bit more than usual — at one point a sax solo from Fisher was left to unfurl outward in expanding concentric ripples as the rest of the band held back. As dreamy as the shimmers from Didur's sequined cape, which was now serving as a stage backdrop.

Six years/Six pack: Jesse Locke

MFS has turned six! My introductory thoughts on this landmark can be found here, but long story short: I asked some folks to pick some of their favourites to help me celebrate.

Today's list is from Jesse Locke, a Weird Canadian, writer and drummer who I first met in person when he slipped some Tonetta in a DJ set.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Joe Strutt is the hardest working human in the Toronto music biz. Mechanical Forest Sound is a dizzyingly exhaustive archive of live recordings from left-of-centre shows, and I'm honoured to take part in this celebration of its sixth birthday. I typically spend time on the site listening to excerpts of gigs I was unable to attend, but for this post I’ve decided to write about six personal fave performances where I was there, mannn…

Simply Saucer - Mole Machine

The Saucer is one of my all time desert island top five bands. Since moving to Toronto, I've had the great pleasure of working with their original members on a few different projects, and it’s been a total blast hearing them tear through the songs that are embedded in my bones. This set at the Ty Segall after-party featured the band's CanCon superstar line-up of founding singer/guitarist Edgar Breau and bassist Kevin Christoff joined by The Killjoys' Mike Trebilcock on guitar/skull theremin and Blue Rodeo/The Garbagemen's Glenn Milchem on the skins. The Mole Machine reigns supreme!

Zacht Automaat - unknown

Zee almighty Hamilton-borne Zacht Automaat follow in the footsteps of Steeltown's O.G. electro-rockers Simply Saucer with their own baroque brand of lysergic liftoffs. I haven't missed a chance to see their twice yearly live shows, and it seems this set at Feast in the East's former Polyhaus venue was the first time both Joe and I were cleansed in their waters. Blah blah blah... Just listen in.

Tenderness - unknown

After a stretch spent in Winnipeg, Chrissy Reichert's recent return to Toronto has been a glorious thing. This gig on the first night of DDL's fifth anniversary weekend (capped off with a once-in-a-lifetime appearance by The Space Lady) served as the debut for her latest collection of block-rockin' devotional bangers, which have twisted and screeched into new shapes with each passing performance. I remain the number one Tenderness fan and can't wait to hear where these songs transport to next.

Matt "Doc" Dunn - [excerpt]

Doc Dunn is a dusty jewel in Toronto’s musical treasure chest, and sometimes you gotta dig deep to find him. This night at Double Double Land (starting to see a trend where I spend my time?) was the release party for his Tecumseth LP, with a dreamy performance joined by regular collaborators Jonathan Adjemian, Isla Craig and Brandon Valdivia. Imagine Loren Mazzacane Connors sipping from the cosmic brew of Alice Coltrane, or just ignore everything in this world entirely and float away.

Darlene Shrugg - Freedom Comes in a Plastic Card

Darlene Shrugg is the East Side all-star band made up of members from Tropics, Ice Cream and U.S. Girls. Their supercharged glam-stomp is one of the greatest things going in town these days, and "Freedom Comes in a Plastic Card" (there's yer song title, Joe) gets wedged in my head all the time. Bonus shout out to the rest of the Frankensteined collaborations at All Toronto's Parties 2: Bong Water, Abra Cadaver, Wildlife Rodeo, and a few truly fun sets I played myself.

Bile Sister with Chandra - Get It Out Of Your System

The shock of the new and a celebration of the shocking unknown came together for the reissue release party of Chandra's Transportation. Bile Sister's set of originals delivered the heat, but it was this truly rare onstage appearance from Chandra Oppenheim (running through songs she originally recorded in 1980 as an art-punk 11-year-old) that brought the house down. There's not much I can say to properly express my gratitude to Joe for capturing yet another fantastic night of music, otherwise lost to the sands of time and fading memories.

Zacht Automaat - [tracks 7 + 8]

Zacht Automaat - [tracks 9 + 10]

If you figured that a late set on a Monday night would keep people away, think again. This season's semi-annual emergence of the mighty Zacht Automaat took place over two back-to-back nights in crammed quarters. The first was at DDL, a frequent stop for the band, and it was jammed in solid.

Still celebrating the consolidation of their double-vinyl compilation (which has now received a second pressing), 2014 was the first year in the band's existence without a new release — though the keen-eared might have heard a hint of what's to come if they paid attention to the between-sets background music at this gig. [Edit: the new album has now landed on bandcamp!] The two nights featured similar setlists, so instead of cherry picking something from each, I'm going to pass along here a pair of one-two punches from the first, which I managed to capture a little bit more cleanly. Stay tuned, keep refreshing the ZA bandcamp site, and remind yourself that summer is just around the corner.

Zacht Automaat - Carl's card trick

Zacht Automaat - A Whiter Shade of Pale

Full review to follow. To some extent, ZA keyboardist Carl Didur cultivates the image of a slightly-distant mad-scientist, more concerned with twiddling knobs than pandering to a crowd. But there's also evidence of a wry sense of humour and a bit of showmanship, too — if the sequined cape didn't tip you off to that, then the way he pulled off a mid-song card trick just might.

Zacht Automaat - unknown [excerpt]

Given the amount of rancour that had surfaced between the festival and elements of the local DIY scene, it was somewhat amusing to see some of the latter gathered together at this "indie label fair" on the festival's final day. Organized by Sonic Boom and People Put Out Productions, this felt like it had its fingers a bit more firmly on the street-level pulse than a lot of NXNE doings. It was nice to see records and tapes getting purchased and there were some cool bands playing outside in the courtyard, which helped send the festival off on a happier note than it began on.

Do you like repetition? If so, these four bars may satisfy you greatly. Do you like repetition? Originally slated as a solo Carl Didur set, in a pleasant surprise this ended up being a ZA duo set, albeit one in a somewhat unusual fashion. Do you like repetition? With A laptop supplying a repeating four-note riff, synth/loop wizard Didur took to the drumkit, joined by Michael McLean on bass in a live recreation of a needle stuck in a record's looping side-closing lockgroove. Zacht Automaat - [first three songs]

Full review to follow. Going to see ZA play one of their infrequent transatlantic gigs has always felt like being a member of some sort of cult. But now, with their double vinyl compilation drawing some new attention their way it felt more like... well, a slightly larger cult. But I definitely got the impression at this gig that there were a lot of folks that had recently discovered the band making their first foray into Carl Didur and Michael McLean's weird universe. To them, I say: welcome!

* Like on the band's recordings, songs came in clustered clumps. I think this is three separate things — if anyone work out the relevant titles, please leave a comment!

Full review to follow. Chances to see Michael McLean and Carl Didur live in action are pretty rare, so there was no way I was going to miss this. It turned out to cook even harder than the last time I saw the band, and that was a pretty awesome show. Both of these selections feature the band's core keyb/bass/drums trio being joined by Colin Fisher, on percussion on the first and sax on the second. Word on the street is that there's a double-album vinyl compilation of ZA's recordings coming out soon, so do keep your eyes peeled for that.

Song: unknown*

Recorded at Polyhaus (Feast in the East 15), July 15, 2012.

Zacht Automaat - unknown

Full review to follow. I've long been saying that Carl Didur is one of the most fascinating musicians in the city by virtue of his solo work. I've also been a big fan of the steady series of releases from Zacht Automaat, his partnership with Michael McLean, his former mate in The Battleship, Ethel. I finally got to see the band in action at tonight's instalment of the excellent Feast in the East series, and except for being too brief (about the equivalent of one of the band's cassette sides) it lived up to expectations, especially when the trio was joined by Colin Fisher on sax. This song is probably drawn from the just-released Bags Inside Bags, but the music never comes with titles attached.

ZA's albums are available on Bandcamp on a name-your-price basis and they are essential Toronto listening.
