Monday Roundup #186

Community notes:

  • Musicworks' annual Electronic Music Composition Contest is now open. "Compose/submit an experimental piece in any electronic-music genre—acousmatic, electroacoustic, glitch, soundscape, intelligent dance music (IDM), turntable art, video music et. al.... The contest is open to entries from anyone located anywhere in the world and from artists at any age or stage of career." It costs $30 to enter, but the cool part is that entry comes with a one-year subscription to the magazine, so you're actually getting a good deal!

Song: How to Steal a Canoe

Recorded at The Gladstone Hotel's Ballroom (Long Winter 5.4), March 24, 2017.

Leanne Betasamosake Simpson - How to Steal a Canoe

Long Winter ended its abbreviated, roving season with a return to The Gladstone, filling the second floor with art and the Ballroom and Melody Bar with ping-ponging live sets. Starting things off in The Ballroom, there were a couple familiar faces, including Nick Ferrio, in supporting roles here, providing the musical backdrop for Simpson's poem-songs drawing on the storytelling traditions of her Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg heritage. Moving past spoken word declamation into sing-speak territory, some of the pieces approached a Blue Aeroplanes-style flow, while others, like this one, soared thanks to Cris Derksen's cello textures.

Recording: Nick Ferrio & His Feelings

Artist: Nick Ferrio & His Feelings

Song: Hide My Love

Recorded at Christie Pits Park – Garden Stage ("Bloor Ossington Folk Festival V") September 20, 2015.

Nick Ferrio & His Feelings - Hide My Love

You can read my general notes on the festival here. The last time I caught Peterborough's Nick Ferrio, he was being backed by the excellent young group The Lonely Parade. This trip saw him with a version of rotating backing band, with Darren Brown of The Burning Hell was filling in on bass and some hurtin' pedal steel adding a bit more twang to thangs. The setlist mostly drew from this year's Amongst the Coyotes and Birdsongs, but included a couple new ones, including the country-funk "Heart to Heart".

Artist: Nick Ferrio and The Lonely Parade

Song: My Friend the Soothsayer

Recorded at Junction City Music Hall, April 9, 2015.

Nick Ferrio and The Lonely Parade - My Friend the Soothsayer

I hadn't been out yet to the Junction City Music Hall, but the basement venue has a casual and intimate vibe that makes it worth revisiting. (But why did no one warn me to bring a pocket full of quarters for the Galaga machine down there amongst the vintage video games and pinball machines?)

I was on the scene to check out this team-up from two of Peterborough's most-notable musical exports, which saw The Lonely Parade acting as Nick Ferrio's backing band. Practising together for the past couple months, this pairing sounded pretty good on their first formal show together, and having a full-on rock unit behind him led to some beefed-up arrangements, as well as inspiring Ferrio to pen this brand-new tune to take advantage of the added crunch the band could offer. They also throttled back enough not to spoil the prettiness of Ferrio's more soulful tunes, many of which will be emerging on the forthcoming Amongst the Coyotes and Birdsongs, out on May 28th. (Keep an eye out for word of a return engagement to celebrate that release.)

Recording: Nick Ferrio

Artist: Nick Ferrio with Misha Bower

Song: Fall in Love

Recorded at Dufferin Grove Park, August 6, 2014.

Nick Ferrio - Fall in Love

Full review to follow. Ending a short tour that took them to Sackville's SappyFest and back, this vanload of pals celebrated their homecoming with a casual evening in Dufferin Grove Park. There were shades of Matt Cully's Poor Pilgrim island shows here, with the modest, portable PA lifting the voices above the sounds of the city creeping in at the edges and curious passers-by occasionally pausing to listen in.

A trip to Whitehorse this spring was apparently a creative tonic for Peterborough balladeer Ferrio, who (between Olympic jokes and pitches for his homemade beard oil) showed off several new songs, including this one featuring backing vocals from Misha Bower, who would do a quick reading after this set before headlining the night as half of EONS.

Song: Half the Time

Recorded at Franklin Children's Garden (Poor Pilgrim 6), July 21, 2013.

Nick Ferrio - Half the Time

Full review to follow. Once again, Poor Pilgrim was an excellent day-long adventure, with perfect weather and beautiful music. Many thanks to Matt Cully, who once again put together a summer highlight. You can see some more photos from the day on the MFS facebook page.

Nick Ferrio led the day off with a set on the storytelling stage, right next to Mother Goose. His plaintive originals were mixed in with a couple older tunes, including a minor-key revisiting of "You Are My Sunshine" that wasn't quite the advertised happy singalong. But with the birds singing in the background, this was an excellent start to the day.
