Fitting their forest-sized goth-drones into the available space, this cowled pair dialed it back a bit for this set, which is to say there was more of an accent on the slow build and atmospheric roil than Bryan Bray's guitar heroics.

Nominally a "punk" presenter, Not Dead Yet is best known for its namesake festival, but its year-round programming is also noted for fostering positive community vibes. As this drone dream of a show indicated, they're also willing to stretch out, musically, and it was a thrill to see a healthy and mixed crowd out for a night of zero-bpm hovering. Bryan Bray would probably be familiar to the NDY crowd for his other projects (especially Gates' doom-y side) but this newer duo with Marty Adem, heavy on, er, heavy atmospherics fit right into the night's flow. Dramatic whispers and soaring e-bow lines cut through the dronefog, and in presenting just three long pieces, the pair managed to deliver the most focused set that I'd yet caught. Still made me feel like I was out later than I should be in a dark forest, though.

This cozy night at The Baby G featured mostly leftfield electronic experimentation, and though this duo qualifies for that description at its broadest reach, they were up to something a bit different than the night's other acts. Song-based (in the sense that their songs are each their own sprawling sound-worlds), this duo of vocalist Marty Adem and guitarist Bryan Bray (also of Gates, Cetacea, etc.) explores some forest hollows, revealing goth-y druid secrets hidden deep in the misty gloaming. The pair have been quite busy working out their sound on stage, and have recently issued their first release, already sold out in a limited cassette run.

[Uxvae will be opening for Rosetta and USA Out of Vietnam at Coalition next week (Wednesday, April 25th).]
