Monday Roundup #11

In the absence of concert listings, my regular Monday dispatches have fallen off. After bringing some life to the blog with the "bumping into" series, I figure I should get back in the groove. I'm guessing that this will be a bit like what used to get shoved into the end of the post when I was doing listings — some bandcamp suggestions, nods to a few livestreams, and sundry community notes (email me if you have anything that needs broadcast in the latter category!). Plus maybe a look back through the MFS archives.

Community notes:

  • Afropop Worldwide checks in with a comprehensive scene report from right here in T.O., looking both at local originators (like Tarik Abubakar and the Afro Nubians) and emerging stars (including Blandine). The players here will be familiar if you check in with Radio Karibuni on CIUT on Sunday afternoons, but if you need a respected authority to remind you what's near at hand, Banning Eyre has you covered. Check out the hour-long program here.
  • Ilyse Krivel (who we virtually bumped into a couple months back) is supplementing the excellent sounds of her Eternalrealworld project with her new Vespertine Printshop on etsy, offering "high quality and original art inspired by the mystical, magical and mysterious."

Livestream nation:

  • End of the month means that Exit Points is coming back around again on Wednesday (March 31st) with two curated sets of electroacoustic experimentation (featuring Rufi Oswaldo, Marguerite Luu, Afraaz Mulji, thispatcher and Magali Dudemaine, Andy Yue, Kurt Inder, Piers Oolvai) plus some audience-participation Switchemups afterwards.

It happened this week...

  • ...on March 31, 2012 at The Silver Dollar Room.

Hunx & His Punx - Let Me In

  • ... on April 3, 2013 at The Tranzac's Southern Cross Lounge.

Bandcamp corner:

  • Your springtime walks (as well as your considerations on the nature of time) with be suitably enhanced if you spend some time with this new collection of solo saxophone explorations from Paul Newman.

Recording: Body Help & Daniel Pencer

Artist: Body Help & Daniel Pencer

Song: [excerpt from second piece]

Recorded at Burdock Music Hall, October 17, 2016.

Body Help & Daniel Pencer - [excerpt from second piece]

The addition of Daniel Pencer that I witnessed a few months back appears to have deepened with his sax now an essential part of the group's new recording, which was being released at this show. Kinesis is more of a carefully executed album than its document-the-live-show predecessor, pulling back the throttle a touch and adding subtle touches (most notably some textured vocals) from some guest performers. Live, though, they're still ripping things up, and Pencer was getting into the group's bend-your-sounds vibes with some effects of his own hooked up to his saxophone.

Recording: Body Help

Artist: Body Help

Song: [first section]

Recorded at Burdock Music Hall (The Music Gallery's Departures Series), June 28, 2016.

Body Help - [first section]

The funky abstractions provided by Kieran Adams (drums), Josh Cole (bass) and Colin Fisher (guit) were augmented by Daniel Pencer's excellent sax work, sending the group into deep avant-fuzak terrain. With Cole's sequencer-blurt bass tone and Fisher's pedals turning his guitar into shimmering MIDI strings, this sounded at times like the jam sessions that probably took place between takes in an early Larry Klein-era Joni Mitchell session.

Recording: Body Help

Artist: Body Help

Song: [second piece]

Recorded at Dundas Video ("Track Could Bend #7"), October 6, 2015.

Body Help - [second piece]

Body Help melds Kieran Adams' push/pull horizontal drum patterns, Josh Cole's treasure hunt vertical bass excursions and Colin Fisher's fourth-dimensional guitar haze-clouds into a slowly-pulsating sphere of abstract funk — a journey that you take while sitting down in one place. Gigs tend to come in occasional clumps, so keep an eye out for more — and word is that there's a second recording from the trio on the horizon.

[The next Track Could Bend — featuring SlowPitchSound, APA, and Jack Vorvis & Scott Thomson — will be at Dundas Video on Tuesday, November 3rd.]

Artist: Body Help

Songs: [second improvised piece, in two parts]

Recorded at Holy Oak Café, January 8, 2015.

Body Help - [second piece, part 1]

Body Help - [second piece, part 2]

This experimental funk trio of Kieran Adams (drums), Josh Cole (bass) and Colin Fisher (guit) offers serious abstract groove action — you should probably sit down for this before you realize that the smell of melting plastic and solder are just in your mind.

Full review to follow. Celebrating the release of a new digital album, Josh Cole (bass/synth), Kieran Adams (drums) and Colin Fisher (guit) presented some cerebral funk that remained keenly aware of the bodyhelpin' biological imperatives.

* The set was performed as one continuous jam — this is basically two sections from that, and I don't know if any of the parts have titles (or if they correspond to any of the "numbers" on the album).
