Cosmic Homeostasis XVIII - The Ways We Unravel [excerpt]

Cosmic Homeostasis XVIII - Space [edited excerpt]

The year's first Cosmic Homeostasis gathering (which happens when there's a fifth Sunday in a month) brought out a robust crowd, with twenty (or so) musicians taking over the perimeter of the Southern Cross and generating some sonic drift zones. A real nice mix of acoutic and electronic sounds, and ranging from some louder zones into quieter interplay.

The participants this time out were:

  • Marilyn - various percussion, singing bowls, namer-of-things
  • Philip Hamilton - guitar, box w/ a string and llama toenails
  • Ron Blake - ipad apps
  • Scott M2 - Animoog
  • Mira Martin-Gray - mini synth, mini theremin
  • Yasmine E - pocket piano, various percussion, rainmaker
  • Adrian Russouw - violin
  • Del Stephen - keyboard synth + cassettes
  • Sophie Jaworski - wooden frog
  • Paul Newman - tenor saxophone
  • Patrick O'Reilly - Volca FM/effects
  • Rod Campbell - trumpet
  • Todd Macdonald - mandolin/Mood
  • Hilary Martin - singing bowl
  • Myfawny Ashmore - singing bowl
  • Michael Lynn - bass + stuff
  • Sterling + Ian - Atari junk console
  • Rob Cruickshank - electronics + resonator
  • Heraclitus Akimbo - synths, etc.

It's tough to get that many folks in the frame, but most of them make an appearance in this footage you can see over on youtube:

And, of course, you can also listen to the whole performance over on bandcamp (and, if you'd like, support the collective's future works with a purchase!):

Once more the Cosmic Homeostasis crew convened for some Sunday afternoon drones, mixing some fine acoustic anchors (Michael Lynn's double bass, Del Stephen's piano) with a surround-sound zone of electronic hums and whispers. The crew this time out was:

  • Scott M2 - Animoog
  • Ron Blake - iOS apps
  • beard closet - guitar
  • Del Stephen - piano, notebook, tambourine
  • Mickle46 - le contrabasse, namer-of-things

Cosmic Homeostasis' deep space drones are a fully modular and scalable concept, so if a busy long weekend means that a few regulars are out of town, smaller numbers can still fill up the sonic cup.

This version of Cosmic Homeostasis included:

  • Mira Martin-Grey - acoustic guitar / Bastl softPop
  • Ron Blake - ipad apps
  • Fahmid Nibesh - electric guitar, pedals
  • Heraclitus Akimbo - Modern Sounds Pluto, Søvnløs, pedals
  • Grant Smales - namer-of-things

The full session is also documented as an album over at bandcamp:

Recorded at The Tranzac (Southern Cross Lounge), September 29, 2019.

This gathering saw a slightly-smaller ensemble of ambient space drifters, but in the current Cosmic Homeostasis context that still meant there were eight soundmakers on hand. (The group here was Curtis Whittaker — also the namer-of-things, Ron Blake, Del Stephen, Patrick O'Reilly, Michael Lynn, Fahmid Nibesh, Mira Martin-Grey, and Joe Strutt.) The first set emerged around buzzing electronic sounds a bit more than usual, but interesting organic flourishes crept into the second.

You can listen to the full session over at bandcamp — money from digital sales will go towards the fund for recording our forthcoming studio album!

[Cosmic Homeostasis will be back at The Tranzac on Sunday, December 29th.]

As the month's fifth Sunday rolls around once more, a robust turnout of musicians (and audience) showed up at the Tranzac to hang out and hear some pleasantly-unrushed drift-drones.

Another afternoon of electroacoustic ambient drift sounds, with a robust turnout that reached fifteen performers by the second set. But for all that, the performers showed admirably restraint, growing the soundfield without becoming too obtrusive and making for a rather-pleasant drifting sensation.

The afternoon's performers included:

  • Ron Blake - guitar, kaoss pad
  • Matt Wells - guitar
  • Rob Cruickshank - electronics
  • Randi Helmers - voice
  • Aaron Dawson - crappy old synth
  • Victor O - water-logged xylo, cello bow, random percussion

  • Marilyn Y - singing bowl, trio chime
  • Paul Newman - tenor saxophone
  • Mira Martin-Gray - electronics

One last drone session to close out the year, Cosmic Homeostasis convened to celebrate Voyager 2 exiting the heliosphere as well as the Ultima Thule flyby – distant encounters that feel close to home to the whispers-from-space crowd. The crew this time comprised of Del Stephen, Trevor Turple, Mike Lynn, Liz Lima, Patrick O'Reilly, Ron Blake, Paul Newman and Heraclitus Akimbo. The whole session is available over bandcamp:

Another cheerfully-cluttered afternoon at The Tranzac, gathering past performers and new faces together to generate some spacious ambient drones. The crew this time included Patrick O'Reilly, Del Stephen, Niamh Shiffra Girling, Jordan Brown, Mira Martin-Gray, Abigail Trotsky, Chris Trotter, Ronnie Blake, Paul Newman, and Heraclitus Akimbo and got some welcome vocal assistance from aspiring homeostasisists Wolfgang and Annika. As usual, you can stream/download the whole thing over at Bandcamp:

Song: Drone Wish for Paul Newman [excerpt]

Recorded at The Tranzac's Southern Cross Lounge (Cosmic Homeostasis VII), July 29, 2018.

Cosmic Homeostasis - Drone Wish for Paul Newman [excerpt]

A robust group of old and new faces combined to generate some Sunday-afternoon electroacoustic space drones at The Tranzac. Frequent contributor Paul Newman was absent (in celebration of a joyous milestone) so the first set started with some manipulated sounds from one of his ace solo saxophone recordings before slowly lurching towards The Spider Nebula. The full cast for this excursion was: Patrick O'Reilly, Del Stephen, Mira Martin-Gray, Niamh Shiffra Girling, Rod Campbell, mkl32, Ronnie Blake, Laura Swankey, Emily Denison, and Heraclitus Akimbo (who was also designated as the namer-of-things).

You can listen to the afternoon's full proceedings over on Bandcamp:

The Cosmic Homeostasis Tactical Memo led to some really tasty results this time, with ambient electroacoustic drift from an ensemble that included Ronnie Blake, Patrick O'Reilly, Rob Cruickshank (the designated "Namer of Things"), Syd Ortega, Paul Newman, Laura Swankey, Heraclitus Akimbo and special guest Karen Ng (on piano!). Sputtering and swirling, the sounds' gravity was all around, even if like dark matter its origins could be hard to identify.

You can listen to/download the whole session over on bandcamp:

Another fifth-Sunday-of-the-month gathering brought together eleven musicians to listen to whispers from space and collectively compose some slowly-moving sounds. The sound palette was a bit more buzzingly electronic this time, finding a humming field for the players to tap into. Some gong-sounds shook that up in the second set, but didn't interrupt the pleasing drift. The performers this time 'round were {AN} EeL, Rob Cruickshank, Kristina Guison, Mira Martin-Gray, Ronnie Blake, Kat Estacio, Syd Ortega, Sarah Peebles, Mehrnaz Rohbakhsh, Johan Seaton, and Joe Strutt.

You can listen to the whole session over at bandcamp:

Another fifth-Sunday-of-the-month came around with a robust turnout from eager homeostasisists — eleven in all, this time round. There was a rather peasant mix of electronic drift-tools with acoustic elements, including Laura Swankey's vocalizations, Nilan Perera's prepared guitar and the mind-meld saxophones of Kayla Milmine and Paul Newman (which just might be the secret sauce that really makes the whole thing). The crew this time was:

  • Kayla Milmine - soprano saxophone
  • Paul Newman - alto saxophone
  • Ted Phillips - radio, phone
  • Nilan Perera - electric guitar
  • Rob Cruickshank - electronics
  • Chris Trotter - electronics
  • Abigail Trotsky - electronics
  • Del Stephen - keyb, piano, namer-of-things
  • Laura Swankey - voice, electronics
  • Joe Strutt - electronics, 4-track recorder, tactical memo
  • Ronnie Blake - electronics

If you'd like a bigger dose than these samples, the whole session is also posted as an album over at Bandcamp:
