Josh Korody's improvised modular synth dancefloor attack played to a sit-down/head-nodding crowd at this one, as he continues to juxtapose repetition and minimal melodic evolutions in the service of groove persistence.

Presenting as part of Dan Burke's annual next-big-thing "Class of" series, this night saw Wavelength at its most Silent Shout-y, presenting projects whose sounds skewed towards various points on the electronic/dance continuum. Josh Korody closed the night out with another excursion from his experimental modular dancefloor attack, once again eschewing the stage to set up among the crowd on the floor. There were a few different textures at play here than the other times I saw this project in action, but as with the last time out, the section that I wanted to pull was the big finale.

With an unusual Saturday night edition and winter nowhere yet to be found, it felt a little different heading down for this one. As with the first of this year's series, the best spot for music was down in the basement, while dance and art crept closer to the night's centre from all directions. Sharing the stage with New Chance (who each had a side on the night's free 7" single), there were some serious dance grooves down in the basement. Actually, "sharing the stage" is something of a misnomer, as Josh Korody instead set up on the floor in front of it, twisting knobs and riding the faders on his mixing panel as he hurled out some modular synth grooves. This closing segment of his short set begins with a blurting tone that sounds like a klaxon warning that a parking garage door is about to open and tears itself open after that. By the end, Korody let the tracks run for a bit as he backed away from his gear to dance in the crowd.

Nailbiter - [second section]

This was the first public appearance by this new side-project from Josh Korody (of Beliefs and Wish), and he brought a couple tables filled with modular synths and patchcords. As the room around him filled with clouds of dry ice, Korody engineered some analog grooves, hinting at old-school industrial sounds. This first salvo has already been accompanied by the project's first album, which mostly works in the same sonic terrain.
