Download: "Selections, Vol. 2"

While thinking upon the blog's fifteenth anniversary, my mind went back to the last time I made a big deal of my blogiversary. To celebrate MFS' 10th, I put together a pair of shows, split into "rock" and "experimental" varieties.

The original idea was that each of those realms was also going to be represented by a tape compilation, in the style of my 5th anniversary tape. In that, my reach somewhat exceeded my grasp. The "experimental" tape, though I had a rough running order and permissions from the artists, never quite came together; the "rock" tape was at least a thing — I did a small run of hand-duped copies to give to artists and to have a few to sell at that 10th anniversary gig. The idea was that from there I'd get a proper run done at Duplication to put out into the world. For various reasons, that never happened, and the tape kinda slipped out of existence.

Well, it's just too damned good to languish like that. Besides containing some of the artists that meant a lot to me in the course of the blog's history, at five years further along, it feels like a poignant little piece of history. A lot of the spaces where the music was recorded are gone now, and while the people are still around (although quite a few have moved along from T.O.), a lot of the groups have wound down or gone quiet.

So let's celebrate and let them not be forgotten. Head on over to bandcamp and grab yourself a download or just listen to some rather excellent music.

My deepest thanks to the artists who agreed to be a part of this five years ago!

Download: NoMeansNo

One of my all-time favourite bands announced their retirement yesterday. Nomeansno were the first "punk" band that I truly loved, that suggested that punk could be so much more expansive than one particular set of sounds or gestures. And the fact that there was this legendary Canadian band hidden in plain sight set me off looking for so many other things. I managed to see them live twice (and their alter agos, The Hanson Brothers, once) though only the last of those was in my show-taping era. That night at Lee's was a marathon hour-and-three-quarters, digging through their deep catalogue but also throwing in some newer stuff. Never a dinosaur act, Nomeansno goes out with a pretty solid discography under their belt, including a handful of stone classic albums. Old age will get us all — but in every defeat, there will be victory.

Nomeansno - Jubilation

Nomeansno - Theresa, Give Me That Knife

Nomeansno - Something Dark Against Something Light

Nomeansno - Victory

NoMeansNo - Live at Lee's Palace, April 4, 2011 [MFS #679]

Meanwhile, here is also my favourite NMN live recording. I bought this "official bootleg" on cassette back when I lived in Winnipeg, and for my money, this is a more-fierce set than the contemporaneous "official" Live and Cuddly. (Do note: this isn't my rip.)

Download: "Selections, Vol. 1 "

Given that I started without much of a long-term plan, it's not a huge surprise to note that I've now been recording shows for five years. But to look back at the collection that I've amassed — and tried, as much as I can, to share — evokes a sort of pleasant shock. What good fortune we have to be in the midst of so much richness!

To help mark the anniversary, my friends at Reel Cod and Pleasence Records helped to create a tangible artifact, collecting some of my fave moments from the past few years. You can grip this (to use the idiom of our times) in cassette form if you act quickly — but if tapes ain't your bag (or if you prefer immediacy to physicality) you can also dig it/stream it/download it over at Bandcamp. (Which makes it available in FLAC, which is important for a few of us.)

Grab it here:

Mechanical Forest Sound — Selections, Vol. 1

Sincere thanks to all the artists involved — go to their shows, buy their albums! And thanks to Chris and James, who not only facilitated making this into a tangible thing, but actually sat me down when I agreed that it was cool idea and actually made it happen.

Download: Tropics 2009-04-24 [MFS #001]

On April 24, 2009, I took my newly-acquired microphones out "in the field" for the first time ever. Butterflies in my stomach, feeling awkward and conspicuous, I stood against a wall and tried to look casual as I hooked up my gear. By sheer chance, the first band that I would record would be Tropics, who were the openers at a Hive Dwellers/Chain and the Gang gig at the old Whippersnapper Gallery on College.

I'd come to enjoy the band more than the somewhat middling praise I offered at the time — and Tropics would be an example of the sort of band that I'm glad to have documented, as they were very much a "live" band whose recorded legacy would under-represent how much material they had.

Tropics - [last song]

This is not my best Tropics recording — it's very literally the sound of a guy figuring out how to use his gear. But I do know a bit more about processing audio now and after a few tweaks, it ain't half bad. And... it's the first. Now, on the fifth anniversary of this whole thing getting started, you can hear it for the first time ever. Grab it here:

Tropics - 2009-04-24 [MFS #001]

Tropics are no more, but their DNA is encoded in the new project Darlene Shrugg. Slim Twig is still Slim Twig. Simone TB can be seen performing with The Highest Order.

Thanks to Max T. for understanding the historical imperative here. At some point I'll have to figure out what my best Tropics recording is and post that.

Download: The Mark Inside

Chris Levoir died last weekend. My thoughts are with his family, friends, bandmates and co-workers in this awful time.

I didn't know him as well as some of the folks whose rememberances are circulating this week, but Chris was a friend to this blog. He thought this sort of documentation of our local culture was important, and he went out of his way to be helpful in making it happen. I first met him properly when I was doing some recordings for the Wavelength festival in 2011 and he helped me get set up with a board feed.

There are some sound techs who act like imperious lords of their little domain, and don't want anyone interfering with them. Busy as he was, Chris was never like that, and subsequently whenever I was at the Great Hall he'd always take a moment in that hurry-up-and-wait-around rhythm that gigs have for a few words, just to chat about what I'd seen lately and what he'd been up to. He'd look you in the eye, shake your hand and speak thoughtfully, but you could always feel an intense force of personality. The Great Hall is a funny sort of room for live music, and over the time that he worked there, Chris had tamed a venue whose sound had previously been a hit-or-miss proposition into something far more consistent — to the point that between the sound I knew I'd hear and the chance to see a friendly face I came to quite look forward to going to shows there.

I also knew him as a rock'n'roll frontman, though not as much as I should have. There's so many bands and so much to do in this city that it's really easy to say, "oh, I'll see them next time." The Mark Inside fell into that category for me, and though I always took note when they had a show coming up, it just happened that several times in a row I let something else take precedence. Enough so, that when next month's album release show was announced, I took care to mark it off in my calendar. I was looking forward to hearing some new material, but even more, I was hoping to get a good recording to be able to offer back to Chris, just as a small token of gratitude for all the help he'd given me. And now, that's not going to happen.

I do have this in my archive, however. And in a week where it's important to celebrate Chris and his work, it seems right to get it out there in circulation. This is a set from NXNE 2009 and finds the band in good form, mostly playing songs from the not-yet released Nothing To Admit. This came when I was still getting my feet wet as a live recordist, so it's not as accomplished as it might be — but the guitars bite and snap nicely and the vocals are clear and present. At the time, I'd posted one song and filed it away. I've put one more below, in case you would like a sample, and the link to the full set follows. Please share freely, crank it up, and celebrate Chris' memory.

Sunday Grab-This!

Sunday Grab-This!

In lieu of a Sunday Playlist this week, here's something even better that you can stream/download for gratis!

I've made no secret 'round these parts for my love of local label Optical Sounds. The bands affiliated with the label put on great live shows and have put out some essential records over the past few years. Now, you can get a sense of all that goodness squeezed into one package, with a new label compilation featuring a tracklist selected by Will Carruthers (Spacemen 3, Spiritualized, Brian Jonestown Massacre). Those very same bands tend to be a shared love of everyone in the OS family, so even if there's a terrific variety here, there is something holding it all together.

You can download or stream the album over at Optical Sounds' bandcamp, or also via the label website, where you can read a bit more about each of the bands involved. This is essential T.O.!

Plus, to celebrate the compilation, OS is throwing a two-night celebration at The Silver Dollar, with many of these bands playing. Be there on Thursday, November 8th (live sets from Ostrich Tuning, The Disraelis, Flowers of Hell, The Auras, Planet Creature) and Friday, November 9th (live sets from B-17, Revolvers, Volcano Playground, The BB Guns, Persian Rugs). Both nights are $8 at the door. Facebook event here.

Download: Broken Social Scene

Ten years ago today — October 15, 2002 — Broken Social Scene's You Forgot It In People was released. This is a slightly more practical celebration of that fact than the essay that I wrote for the occasion. It is, admittedly, not entirely period-correct to YFIIP. Rather, it comes from the long couple years after when I was keenly awaiting its follow-up, and decided to go through all of the live recordings I had collected to put as many new songs together as possible in one place. Think of this as the sprawling double live album that BSS never released. And to replicate the vintage BSS concert experience, it's packed full of technical difficulties and stage banter.

It was originally designed to fill up two CD's, so I have simply boiled those down to two sets of MP3's that you can grab with these links:

BSS - Egregore (part 1)

BSS - Egregore (part 2)

Alternate links in the comments. Do let me know if you have any problems with these files.

[Caveat: Besides being filled with my art-obsessions of the time, this was assembled when I was just starting to play around with audio editing software, so some of the clunky transitions here make me cringe a little. To the extent that I was aiming for a smoothly-edited montage from song to song, I missed badly. If I had more time at my disposal, I would go back and re-edit this whole thing to flow more smoothly, but I don't — so it's being presented "as is".]

None of these are my own recordings. Many thanks are due to the original tapers. Special thanks are also due to longtime BSS fan Nippleholic, who approached me with a different idea for a 10th anniversary celebration. That project didn't come together — yet — but it definitely planted the seed for this.

Download: Wavelength TWELVE live sampler

It's the most wonderful time of the year! The line-up for the 12th annual Wavelength Festival (named, helpfully, TWELVE) was just announced. You should go here and roll around in the goodness for a bit.

There's a fair amount of music there that might be familiar if you've ever traipsed around this blog. Just to wrap things up in a tidy little package, I've uploaded a compilation featuring live recordings from thirteen of the twenty bands that are playing the festival. And you can grab it with this link:

Wavelength TWELVE live sampler

If you want to go "a la carte", you can dig around in the tag list at the right and find music from the bands playing the festival and much more. Hopefully in time there will be a compilation of live recordings from this festival, like my 2010 and 2011 collections.

Support the artists who make wonderful music like this happen — pay what you can often + enthusiastically. Also: pick one of the Wavelength organizers that most looks like they need a hug, and give them a hug.

Download: Wavelength ELEVEN

Five nights... compressed into two hours! I've put together a compilation with a track from every set from February's Wavelength festival. You can grab it here:

Wavelength ELEVEN! compilation

This is offered on a PWYC basis — payable the next time you go out and see any of these fine artists. Remember folks: 'pay what you can' doesn't mean 'the least you can get away with' — we can't have serious cultural ambitions if we only pay Walmart prices.1

Most of the tracks here are different than the ones from the festival I've already posted, so if you dig back and grab those, you can mega-size your memories.

This compilation is offered in 256 kbps MP3. If anyone has an avid interest in a lossless version, send me an email.

1 This is a paraphrase of a comment by the always-insightful John Lorinc. You should read this is you wonder how our civic infrastructure been allowed to wear down so much and are worried about the future of our city.
