LordAUK-A L M A-Jessica Deutsch - What a Wonderful World

Who are concerts for? How are they organized to suit different audiences? Limitations of "concert infrastructure", probably more than limitations of imagination mean these questions aren't too often poked at — but this trio has been putting their minds to how to present music for the younger set, filling the floor with blankets and making a cozy zone for young ones and parents to soak in some Sunday afternoon sounds.

This experiment lead to some important observations — the youngest bebbers do well with the ambient sounds, and can float along with an unrushed drift, while the older toddlers, eager to move and grab the world, are more engaged by something exciting and interactive. There were gestures in both those directions here, with a retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk having a few dramatic flourishes as well as some spacious unfurling between episodes. More shows to follow, I'm told, expanding on the lessons learned here, so keep an eye out.

Given the relaxed atmosphere at this show, these clips have a field recording quality to them with some foreground murmurings co-existing with the music, but that's okay too — I hear babies cry, I watch them grow / They'll learn much more / Than I'll ever know.

Recording: LordAUK

Artist: LordAUK

Song: [first section]

Recorded at The Tranzac's Southern Cross Lounge (SynCirSundays), May 8, 2022.

LordAUK - [first section]

The political undercurrent in Jaclyn Blumas's past work often brushed against Emma Goldman's revolution-you-can-dance-to, but this solo set, with Bluman sitting on the floor behind her OB-6 and declaring that "the imagination is a political space" brought to mind Ursula K. Le Guin's invocation that resistance to seemingly intractable systems begins in art, and in our minds. Just my imagination, runnin' away with me.

[SynCirSundays will be back on Sunday, June 12th, with sets from The Luan Phung Trio and Perera/Fournier/Sacks.]

Recording: LordAUK & Zones

Artist: LordAUK & Zones

Song: [excerpt]

Recorded at The Music Gallery (X Avant XVI – Night 3), October 16, 2021.

LordAUK & Zones - [excerpt]

The Music Gallery's annual X Avant Festival felt like a return and a renewal in all the right ways. Although these weren't the first events presented by new-ish Artistic Director Sanjeet Takhar, they were the first ones in person, with performers and audience sharing space — a long-awaited return from all sides. Each of the nights played off the festival theme "You in Mind", looking for ways to amplify and support the overlapping communities being drawn together. Day Three ("Process") was "dedicated to the global thread of sustained tone as a healing modality" — by way of an eight-hour drone zone, letting the audience lay back on 918 Bathurst's sanctuary floor and watch projections planetarium-style on the high-arched ceiling.

This duo of ZONES' Derek McKeon and Doomsquad's Jaclyn Blumas brought out the serious synths and keybs to head straight for the heart of the planetarium – a move known in the drone game as "bringin' the Tange".
