Mike Smith has had a productive creative year, even if it's more visible right now as steps in a process rather than in a series of finished products. New compositions pop up regularly and are tested out in the context of constantly-variable combos. Even when a project — such as his "Transcombobulation" synth duo with Jonathan Adjemian — gains some ongoing momentum, it's liable to be tinkered with even further. Hence this funky evening, with two synths joined by a rhythm section squared: Jake Oelrichs and Blake Howard on percussion and Pete Johnston and Ron Clutton on double bass. That allowed for extra rhythm and extra funkiness all around, and still plenty of space in the grooves. Over two sets, Smith and co. explored a number of compositions, numbered and otherwise, the moods ranging from the playful percussion of the first selection here to the sci-fi balladry of the second.
