Artist: Mike Smith & Jonathan Adjemian
Songs: Fifth Transcombobulation + Sixth Transcombobulation
Recorded at Array Space (All-Set! Triple Album Launch), March 5, 2016.
This show served as the launch party for All-Set! Editions and its first three releases. Masterminded by Mike Smith, these first three albums all included his beautifully-designed packaging — and all three also revolved around players from the overlapping Muskox/Aurochs axis. One point of origin that lead to this night would be Mike Smith's month-long Tranzac residency back in August 2014, which featured the debut of his transcombobulatin' duo with Jonathan Adjemian while exploring a whole new book of compositions in a variety of musical contexts. This would be an ongoing process — I've also seen "Sixth" performed in a "luxury" version that included a double rhythm section, but it's worth putting up here again, as this variant with Adjemian on Array's grand piano also has a different feel than the one that closes out the pair's album. Word on the street is that the next batch of All-Set! releases, due in September, will include some more Mike Smith compositions in his "company" formation.
