Not The Wind, Not The Flag - [excerpt 2]
When I saw NTW,NTF last month, it was outside, under the sun and with a world of strangers standing around and/or wandering by. Assessing the situation, Colin Fisher and Brandon Valdivia pushed their set towards their louder and more bombastic edges. For this show (celebrating the release of Vermillion, their first-ever vinyl LP, on Pleasence Records) they were in front of quietly-sitting friends, and the band spent most of their extended set going in instead of out. Colin Fisher twisted knobs on his modular synth while Brandon Valdivia huddled over his pedals as the band crated a lengthy buzzing dronescape. These are tones I'd often describe as something like "humming menace", but in Fisher and Valdivia's hands, they felt more affirmative, like potential energy or anti-entropy. Like music yearning to be born.
[Not The Wind, Not the Flag will be playing a free in-store show at June Records on Sunday, June 25th.]
