Artist: Tom Richards
Songs: [two excerpts]
Recorded at The Steady Café (Track Could Bend #30), August 1, 2017.
Tom Richards' Shore Line is modestly described as "drones... intended to be used by musicians for practicing intonation and refining tone-quality" but it's been one of my favourite summer albums. I invited Richards to come and makes some sounds in that style, and he obliged, with monotron/phone/tablet/pedals/mixer combining for some glides and sputter-bursts that were less meditative than their album counterparts, but had that excellent quality of feeling like something being kept barely under control. Indeed, under the tiki hut, Richards looked a bit like a mad scientist, hunched over his implements, mysteriously wringing out his sounds.
[Track Could Bend returns on Tuesday (September 5th) with some excellent voices and other sounds featuring MAMALIA, Lash Pandiculations (Tova G. Kardonne, Heather Saumer, Ali Berkok) and jiggy jiggy jiggy (Christopher Willes, Thom Gill, Phil Melanson). Riverrun, Richards' chamber/space ensemble, will be playing at The Emmet Ray on Monday, September 11th.]
