Artist: Odonis Odonis
Recorded at Artscape Gibraltar Point (Camp Wavelength), August 20, 2016.Odonis Odonis - Needs
Following and expanding on the template of last year's successful festival, Wavelength returned to the island with a meticulously-executed event that included an exciting range of music and a beach full of art beside festival headliner Lake Ontario. It also managed to be a stress-reducing rather than a stress-inducing time — rather like a weekend at the cottage, even if the city was just out of view.
I hadn't seen Odonis Odonis perform since their Post Plague pivot and though I thought knew what to expect, I was intrigued to note the live set was far more Pigface than previously. Jarod Gibson had shed his drumkit for a table of electronics and the chanted vocals (including a cover of Nitzer Ebb's "Join in the Chant") made the enterprise seem much more like a three-headed beast, making Dean Tzenos less of a frontman/focus on stage. An intense menacing crunch, and pretty much a complete turnover in the setlist from the old days, there was definitely a lurking sense of danger in the songs.
