Dust - [excerpt from second set]

Full review to follow. Formed by enigmatic namesake Abraham Dust (whose presence at this show was felt through a cryptic letter of encouragement reminding participants to consider the harmony of the beehive), this was billed as "the quietest big band in the known world", with fifteen or so musicians assembled. Fans of fortissimo were surely sent home unsatisfied, with the music being delivered in whispers, clicks and various scratchings. In this passage, you can hear a bit of a melodic centre emerge from Jay Hay (sax/flute), one of several players who were forced to work out of their normal comfort zone in this hushed environment. Even when the band was at its most roiling, a normal speaking voice would have been louder.
