First Base - Sandra + I Hate You

No surprise to see headliner Dany Laj right up in front of the stage for this opening set — he'd later call 'em "Toronto's best power pop band". At their best, the quartet leavened Buddy Holly-ish songcraft with punk momentum, and there were some tasty nuggets scattered throughout the set. They closed with a rousing ramble through "I Hate You", a tune familiar to anyone who's seen Star Trek IV and probably up there with the Queen Haters in the annals of fake punk songs.
