Mike Gennaro brings a strong physicality to his work behind the kit, eyes squeezed tightly shut as if he were causing the clatter around him by telekinesis. For this set, he was matched blow-for-blow by Simeon Abbott's piano work. This was aggressive stuff, sometimes sounding more like a tug-of-war than a dance, and an interesting counter to some of the festival's more genteel improvisations.
