Mingjia Jessica Chen & Claire Yunjin Lee - unknownThe first Women From Space Festival saw four excellent concerts take place over the course of the International Women's Day weekend. Organized by Bea Labikova and Kayla Milmine, the festival felt like a really savvy gathering, always more than the sum of its parts and showcasing the depth of talent in the city's various creative music streams in a women-centred environment.
The night ended with a different sort of musical endeavour, with a stop in vocalist Mingjia Chen's avant cabaret. Joined by pianist Claire Yunjin Lee, the pair essayed some Messiaen as well as some of Chen's own tunes, including this playful instructional/philosophical ditty on what one should do if they run into a bear while out in the woods.
