Percussionist Jack Vorvis has a good name in Toronto's improvised music community. He's played with CCMC, cut a duo album with Michael Snow, and more recently had a recurring duo with Jeremy Strachan. He's been playing around less lately, which made this appearance with trombonist Scott Thomson a noteworthy event. Besides his occasional shouts of joy that punctuated the set, he brought a most unusual drumkit, stripped down to a giant bass drum and floor tom — and the three overlapping cymbals that create the crinkling-tinfoil texture that underpins this segment. Ridiculously tasty stuff, so hopefully we'll be hearing some more from this pairing.
