Recording: Bryan W. Bray & Germaine Liu

Artist: Bryan W. Bray & Germaine Liu

Song: [first section]

Recorded at Ratio, March 26, 2016.

Bryan W. Bray & Germaine Liu - [first section]

This new partnership saw guitarist Bryan Bray (Gates, Cetacea) join forces with percussionist Germaine Liu. An interesting chance to see worlds collide, with Bray's dark-edged constructions being tugged around by Liu's full-body abstractions — this opening segment built up to sounding like ghosts that have a low opinion of the plane they've been consigned to.

Manticore - See Land From Telescope

The familiar local support groups at this Burn Down the Capital show did an excellent job of setting the table for the out-of-town headliner — in this case, Manticore's alien arias laid the groundwork for M. Lamar's spiritual opera goth-grooves later in the night. Going in, I assumed I wasn't going to need to post anything from this set, having posted "enough" of Manticore's regular tunes. But to my delight, the set contained not only a sonic reimagining of old chestnut "Hekate", but two new pieces that pushed Zoë Alexis-Abrams and David Jones in some new directions. This one incorporates Alexis-Abrams' SK-1 (also recently seen in her work with The Nick Storring Band), which she used to sample her own voice for a subtle extra layer that you can hear in the earlier part of the song here.

Recording: Benoît Pioulard

Artist: Benoît Pioulard

Song: unknown*

Recorded at Array Space (Wavelength 696: Don't Speak), March 25, 2016.

Benoît Pioulard - unknown

An interesting, if not completely successful, experiment socially-engineered by WL's Adam Bradley, this performance came with a prohibition against verbal communication not only during but in between the evening's sets. While that's appreciated as a means of enjoying the music without interruption, it actually felt rather oppressive when the musicians weren't playing — and, truth be told, rather than trying to muck about with the supplied cards and pencils for written communication, I simply withdrew into the company of my phone and felt rather isolated in a way that I could be any time at home. Far more discomfiting was the decision to not offer chairs, leaving a room of people milling about on their feet while absorbing some slowly-unfurling ambient music. I guess from my perspective, the thing that threw me off the most about this gig is that I find myself hanging out at Array Space fairly often, and to me it's the sort of place where no top-down rules are required to enjoy music in comfort and silence — adding the formal gimmick was just too much inorganic chemistry.

Seattle-based Thomas Meluch has been making music as Benoît Pioulard for more than a decade, including several releases on the esteemed Kranky label. His self-described lo-fi folk emerges both musically and visually as abstract ambiance, evoking hazy memories and half-submerged emotions. Employing bowed guitar and layers of loops, he seemed quite content to let his projections be the main visual focus during his set, performing while facing away from the crowd, and often kneeling on the floor. Egoless but rather absorbing stuff.

* The set was played as a continuous performance, but there were definite sections within that – I don't know of any of those count as formally-titled pieces. Please leave a comment if you can nail down a title for this!

I was definitely glad to have a chance to hear this duo performing in a less casual environment than I had previously caught 'em in. With General Chaos' swirling textures on two walls behind them, Brad Deschamps and Mike Abercrombie came the closest to employing traditional song-structures, their set broken into three pieces or suites, each with their own internal sonic resolution. This final, and longest, piece is quite pleasingly glacial in its development.

That said, it was a good night, music-wise, leading off with a set from Manticore/Bile Sister's David Jones. Although his solo work often heads off into noisier realms, this hewed more to pleasing sinewave drones accompanied by his visual analog oscillations projected across the room. This section sounds like a lonely whale, singing the blues through unacknowledged sonar pings.

Recording: Os Tropies

Artist: Os Tropies

Songs: Seu Heka + two unknown covers*

Recorded at Burdock Music Hall, March 24, 2016.

Os Tropies - Seu Heka

Os Tropies - unknown

This local crew are deeply inspired by Tropicália, the Brazilian pop movement of the '60 and '70's with a heady mix of psychedelic rock with samba and bossa nova. Raising some funds to complete work on their forthcoming full-length, the band played two sets — one of their own material and another with covers of some of the songs that inspired them. Both were full of great tunes and bum-shaking fun, demonstrating that the band can appeal to comp-collecting crate diggers as well as folks looking for a place to dance.

Recording: DUST

Artist: DUST

Song: [set 1, second piece excerpt]

Recorded at The Tranzac (Southern Cross Lounge), March 23, 2016.

DUST - [set 1, second piece excerpt]

This evening's manifestation of "the quietest big band in the known world" started off as a quartet, but had seven members by night's end, each endeavouring to make as little noise as possible with their instruments. Heather Saumer put in a valiant effort here, rarely playing her trombone, instead choosing to luxuriate in the ruffled sound its bell made when rubbed across the carpet, or listening to the inside of a cowbell as if it were a seashell. Pianist Avesta Nakhaei, often a maximalist by inclination, managed to pare things back to gently-played phrases that added just the faintest bit of melodic structure to the proceedings. Beyond that, you can try and extrapolate some quiet glass-clinks, subtle sax licks and a double bass string being flossed by a hair plucked from a bow just above the noise floor of this recording.

[DUST is definitely best appreciated live and in a quiet room, so their upcoming set at the Music Gallery, leading things off at St. Dirt Elementary School's 15th Anniversary celebration, should be about ideal. As the invite to the event cheekily comments, earplugs are entirely optional.]

Recording: No Octopus Dances

Artist: No Octopus Dances

Songs: [two excerpts]

Recorded at The Tranzac (Southern Cross Lounge), March 23, 2016.

No Octopus Dances - [set 1, first piece excerpt]

No Octopus Dances - [set 1, second piece excerpt]

A rare evening manifestation of a grouping usually seen on a Sunday afternoon, this splinter faction of No Angels Dancing (Allison Cameron and Stephen Parkinson) and Octopus (Germaine Liu and Mark Zurawinski) played a couple sets of spontaneous electroacoustic spatter wrangled by organic percussive clatter. Sonic ingredients include the yawing noise-taps of Parkinson's guitar; Cameron's tapes, keyb and ribbon synths; and stereophonic percussion ranging from gentle brushwork to abstract bow-sawing.

Concert Listings Roundup #143

You can read more about why I'm doing listings here. Long story short: This curated and decidedly non-comprehensive list contains nothin' but shows that I am going to/would go to if I had more time.

Gig of the week:

Track Could Bend #13: First Anniversary All-Star Spectacular! [instant "bands from a hat" + recombinations of musicians who played TCB's first year!] (feat. Ben Sirois / A la lettre / James Beardmore / Anna Mernieks / Mike Duffield / Ian McPhedran / Colin Fisher / Randy Gagne / Kayla Milmine / Brian Abbott / Neil Rankin / Leslie Predie / Andy Yue / Matthew Ramolo / Allison Cameron / James Bailey / {AN} eel / Kristel Jax / Michael Kaler / Glen Hall / David Jones + APA / more TBA!) / Dundas Video 2016-04-05 (Tuesday) [FB event]

I try not to self-promote my monthly series in this space too much, but this one is definitely worth hyping. Much to my joyful surprise, Track Could Bend has been going for a full year, and to celebrate, I invited everyone who played in the first twelve shows to come back to celebrate the occasion. At the moment, it looks like there'll be a couple dozen or so showing up to play, so it's going to be a jam-packed night. There's a couple new pre-planned collaborations, but most folks are going to be playing in spontaneous groupings drawn from hat right before they head on stage. Expect some creative confusion and sonic surprises.

Recording: TorQ Percussion Quartet

Artist: TorQ Percussion Quartet

Song: Music for Small Spaces [composer: Patrick Arteaga]

Recorded at the Canadian Music Centre (Music for Small Spaces), March 22, 2016.

TorQ Percussion Quartet - Music for Small Spaces

A lot of the time, TorQ can fill a stage with large-scale percussion gear, but this aptly-titled show saw them exchange that for a table apiece of widely-assorted implements, from plant pots to woodblocks. They'd put out a call for compositions suiting this scaled-down kitchen junk-drawer of bricabrac, the results of which filled out this programme in the cozy performance space at Chalmers House. The composers rolled with the idiosyncratic instrumentation, and many of the pieces had a playful spirit, with several incorporating improvisation or elements of chance. Sally Norris' follow-the-leader "Experiments 1 + 2" were as much performative as musical, and Andrew Staniland's "Liar's Dice" (one movement of a larger suite that group has been debuting throughout their season) involved co-ordinated foot stomping and dice-rolling — its ideal format would be in viral video form. And this final piece, which gave the event its name, involved a series of scored substrates which two of the musicians would play together while the other two improvised to graphic scores — which turned out to be a series of tree photographs selected via a show of hands from the audience.

[TorQ will close out their season at 918 Bathurst — much less of a smaller space — on Tuesday May 24th, 2016, with a programme that will include the final movements of Staniland's Time Travels Light and more.]

Recording: Colin Fisher

Artist: Colin Fisher

Songs: [solo improvisations on tanbur and guzheng]

Recorded at Musideum (Myseum Intersections' Sounds of Toronto: Lunchtime Concert Series), March 21, 2016.

Colin Fisher - [tanbur excerpt]

Colin Fisher - [first piece for guzheng]

Not sure who's behind the Myseum of Toronto, but props to 'em for throwing this free lunchtime concert series at the cozy (and soon to be defunct) Musideum, and for giving Colin Fisher a chance to show off some casual mastery of a couple instruments he doesn't play in public too often. With his fingers dancing above the tanbur's all-but-invisible strings, the first thing that came to mind was Michael Keith's recent work on three-string baritone ukulele — no huge surprise given that the instrument had found its way to Fisher via none other than Michael Keith. Fisher's guzheng, meanwhile, had been purchased at Musideum, [[insert "circle of life" joke]] as he played a couple pieces: the first (heard here) in more of a traditional vein and the second using more experimental techniques. A second set included some ace (but more frequently heard) work on guitar.

[Katie from Music Between Friends also captured the set, which you can hear over at soundcloud.]

Recording: Gambletron

Artist: Gambletron

Songs: [two excerpts]

Recorded at Handlebar (Bedroom Sessions), March 20, 2016.

Gambletron - [radio excerpt]

Gambletron - [excerpt]

Handlebar's Bedroom Sessions series is a space offering "experimental/side projects from celebrated Toronto (and beyond) musicians". Montréal's Gambletron continues to explore the infinitely-malleable possibilities of radio waves. When I saw her at last summer's Camp Wavelength she had a boombox flotilla that she was attempting to keep afloat in the lake off the Gibraltar Point beach; here, her stack of a dozen radios were safe and dry, and built into a wall to broadcast out into the audience, with one antenna being manipulated theremin-style. After that, there'd be waves of mushy beats, distorted phoneme-fragments from her mouth-mic and other shredded sonics that would emerge into the ghostly haze of some forgotten pop tune.

[the next Bedroom Sessions night will be at Handlebar on Sunday, April 17th with a tasty lineup featuring Man Made Hill, Haolin Munk, Doom Tickler and Fulldeck Subhuman.]

Castle If - [excerpt]

Handlebar's Bedroom Sessions series is a space offering "experimental/side projects from celebrated Toronto (and beyond) musicians". Jess Forrest was working in the same drone terrain she had explored at Track Could Bend, starting with a meticulous and patient build before making some wobbly investigations on the manipulations of sine waves.

Bonus! Here's some video footage from the earlier part of the set:

Dead Neighbourhoods - [last segment]

Handlebar's Bedroom Sessions series is a space offering "experimental/side projects from celebrated Toronto (and beyond) musicians". Another ambient spinoff from WEARENOTWHOWEARE, this pairing of Brendon Saarinen & Eric James Mayer played face-to-face on stage. Opening with sonic drift and found-sound bursts, the sonic haze segued into a single song, and then back out again into the hazy digression heard here.

roljui - [last segment]

Handlebar's Bedroom Sessions series is a space offering "experimental/side projects from celebrated Toronto (and beyond) musicians". This night lead off with a set from Dean Williams' solo project, featuring a modular box with a rainbow of patchcords and other sundry electronics. Ranging from noodly montages to more beat-driven stuff, this comedown section of the set had some tasty ideas, including some deep bass that caused some interesting rumblings.
