Once more, the Women From Space Festival filled the International Women's Day weekend — and the spaces of 918 Bathurst — with sound, art, and a feeling of community. Mixing genres, but always focusing on creative striving, there was a lot of music to absorb over three nights. The festival's final night contained a trio of custom-curated combos, adding some see-it-here immediacy.
A longform experiment in improvised movement, this set saw dancer Nickeshia Garrick responding (but also sometimes seemingly conducting) percussionist/electronicist Val Jeanty. There were a series of discrete pieces here, each based around vocal samples exploring themes of Black identity that flowed and stuttered from Jeanty's triggers.
