For the fourth year, Somewhere There is taking over The Tranzac for a full weekend that pulls together various strands of Toronto's creative/experimental/improvised music scenes. There's a pleasing dose pleasing dose of familiar names in new and evolving recombinations, including the new Nick Storring Band (with Zoë Alexis-Abrams, Germaine Liu, John Mark Sherlock, and Ilana Waniuk) and the Kyle Brenders Ensemble (with Ben Grossman, Germaine Liu, Peter Lutek, Karen Ng, Cheldon Paterson, Nicole Rampersaud, Nick Storring, Brandon Valdivia, and Doug Van Nort); familiar combos like Jay Hay's Interstellar Tentet and Ken Aldcroft's THREADS; post-show romps in the Southern Cross with Ronley Teper's Lipliners and avant-folkists The Polka Dogs; and two afternoon matinées, including a solo improvisation roundtable and showcase on Saturday. (I've also been asked to speak on Friday night to start things off, but don't let that dissuade you from seeing all the great music.)
