Recording: Sphinxs

Artist: Sphinxs

Song: Both Die

Recorded at The Garrison – front room (Swap & Rock fundraiser show for Girls Rock Camp), April 21, 2013.

Sphinxs - Both Die

Full review to follow. This mellow afternoon show served as a warm haven on an unseasonably cold spring day, but was also put together for a good cause, raising funds to support this summer's edition of Girls Rock Camp. There were plenty of great role models playing (and organizing) the show, including Sphinxs' Siânteuse, who along with her bandmates quite took over the room, moving further and further out into the crowd as the set went on.

Recording: Hamid Drake & David Mott

Artist: Hamid Drake & David Mott

Songs: excerpts from a live soundtrack to Alexandra Gelis' Corredor

Recorded at St. Anne's Anglican Church, April 20, 2013.

Hamid Drake & David Mott - Corredor [opening sequence]

Hamid Drake & David Mott - Corredor [train ride]

Full review to follow. Alexandra Gelis' Corredor began as a six-screen installation piece, but was reconfigured to one for this special presentation to close this year's Images Festival. A meditation on Panama and the interventions upon it caused by the American canal quest, Drake and Mott (on drums and sax) brought a site-specific musical response, annotating the newsreel footage, soundtracking the landscapes, and occasionally prowling up and down the aisles to fill the space with sounds. A wonderful one-of-a-kind event.

Recording: Beliefs

Artist: Beliefs

Song: Catch My Breath

Recorded at Sonic Boom (Record Store Day 2013), April 20, 2013.

Beliefs - Catch My Breath

Full review to follow. Jesse Crowe and Josh Korody played some older and newer songs to celebrate Record Store Day, including this gem, which is one of the highlights on their tasty self-titled debut full-length.

Recording: Tess Parks

Artist: Tess Parks

Song: Anemone [Brian Jonestown Massacre cover]*

Recorded at Sonic Boom ("Record Store Day 2013"), April 20, 2013.

Tess Parks - Anemone

Full review to follow. Anyone that was still sleepy as the full day's worth of live music began at Sonic Boom had a chance to be nudged towards consciousness with Parks' hazy, drowsy stylings. Parks, a noted photographer whose Take Care of Your Soul exhibit just closed at Oz Studios, showed off a well-crafted group sound that fills in some of the spareness of the demos that appeared online a few months ago. I'm looking forward to hearing more of this.

* Thanks to Ami for passing along the title to this one!

Recording: The GGS New Music Ensemble

Artist: The Glenn Gould School New Music Ensemble

Songs: Triple Riffing [excerpt] (Tim Brady, composer) + Chamber Concerto: I. Corrente (Fließend) (György Ligeti, composer)

Recorded at The Royal Conservatory of Music (Conservatory Theatre), April 18, 2013.

The GGS New Music Ensemble - Triple Riffing [excerpt]

The GGS New Music Ensemble - Chamber Concerto - I. Corrente

Full review to follow. A night of top-notch performances from these students at the Royal Conservatory. The evening started with Tim Brady appearing in two roles, first playing improvised electric guitar alongside the ensemble on a Steven Mackey piece, pitting free will and determinism in a head-to-head battle. That set the stage nicely for the moto perpetuo of his own "Triple Riffing", performed by a trio of students on piano, clarinet and violin. The building layers featured plenty violin sawing and some clarinet squawks that put the composer's guitar shredding and feedback squeals at the top of the mind.

The second half featured Alexina Louie's "Imaginary Opera", which vivdly set the scene for a tale of nefarious deeds by the foggy riverside and a chase scene with ghosts just somewhere outside the edges of the frame. And the night closed with with a meticulous reading of Ligeti's "Chamber Concerto" with many different sonic densities bubbling together. The quick pizzicato strings and deconstructed stereophonic chord-blasts brought some elements of electronic music to mind, and the inclusion of some creamy synth textures hinted that this piece (from 1970) could be read as being as much a contemporary of, say, Silver Apples as of Górecki or music of that ilk.

This wasn't the first time that I've seen this ensemble play, and I've always been impressed by the calibre of performance and the energy brought by the students and director Brian Current. These shows are about the joy of discovery for both the performers and audience, and they're quite reasonably priced. Just as I'd rather go see a band at the 'Shoe than at the ACC, there's a real delight in seeing these musicians close up at this stage of their performing careers. At this last concert of the year for the group there were a few more empty seats in the theatre than there should have been, so once the ensemble gets started in the next season, expect me to be hectoring you to come out and join me in discovering something new.

Recording: Shannon Graham and The Storytellers

Artist: Shannon Graham and The Storytellers

Songs: Samsara + You Are the Answer/Claustrophobia

Recorded at Gallery 345, April 17, 2013.

Shannon Graham and The Storytellers - Samsara

Shannon Graham and The Storytellers - You Are the Answer/Claustrophobia

Full review to follow. Celebrating the release of her first album with the eight-piece Storytellers band, Shannon Graham is up to something interesting, using pop ebullience to synthesize both the swing of a jazzy rhythm section and the sweep of orchestral strings. The genres at play here could point to a sort of stuffy, "technical" sort of vibe, but beyond the music's playful energy, the cheap beers and Spice Girls mixtape between sets show this is very much not the intention. And while this music hints at Graham's rigourous skills as a composer (she's recently had pieces played by Spectrum ensemble, where she's co-artistic director, and other local New Music presenters) this is also something that can be appreciated by people who dig the orch-pop end of the indie-rock continuum — folks into, say, Kite Hill, L CON, The Meek, etc. should definitely check this out.

Recording: Del Bel

Artist: Del Bel

Song: Excerpt from a live score to Adolf Trotz's Überfall

Recorded at CineCycle ("Wavelength 559: Scoring CineCycle"), April 16, 2013.

Del Bel - Überfall [excerpt]

Full review to follow. Wavelength's creative musical spirit went head-to-head with Images' characteristic push past the limits of the movie screen at this night with three bands tackling scores to classic experimental films. Trotz's expressionist short, filled with symbolism-laden camera tricks, was nicely mirrored by the spooky undertones of Del Bel's music here. But there was also a funky propulsion at play, as if Chic had been sent off to spend a night in a darkened gothic castle.

Recording: Eucalyptus

Artist: Eucalyptus

Song: Windmill Will [Excerpt from a live score to Betty Ferguson's Kisses]*

Recorded at CineCycle ("Wavelength 559: Scoring CineCycle"), April 16, 2013.

Eucalyptus - Windmill Will

Full review to follow. Wavelength's creative musical spirit went head-to-head with Images' characteristic push past the limits of the movie screen at this night with three bands tackling scores to classic experimental films. Doing double-duty on the night (as a member of the Lina Allemano Four and leading his own band here) Brodie West was celebrated in the night's refreshing signature cocktail. The film is a montage of kisses from various movies, and as they progressed from chaste kisses on the back of the hand to continental pecks on the cheek to more passionate lipmashing, this piece's circular theme on toy piano and gently insistent percussion provided a throughline.

* Following from the name of the film being soundtracked, I'd originally labelled this then-new composition "Kisses [Part 1]", but now we have a proper title for it.

Recording: Lina Allemano Four

Artist: Lina Allemano Four

Song: Live score to Jordan Belson's Allures

Recorded at CineCycle ("Wavelength 559: Scoring CineCycle"), April 16, 2013.

Lina Allemano Four - Allures

Full review to follow. Wavelength's creative musical spirit went head-to-head with Images' characteristic push past the limits of the movie screen at this night with three bands tackling scores to classic experimental films. Leading things off, Lina Allemano & co. brought very different moods, starting with the jaunty walking basslines of Leon Prochnik's The Existentialist and then getting more abstract for the geometrical animations of Allures.

Recording: Baby Dee & Little Annie

Artist: Baby Dee & Little Annie

Song: Pilgrim Traveler [Sister Wynona Carr cover]

Recorded at The Monarch Tavern, April 15, 2013.

Baby Dee & Little Annie - Pilgrim Traveler

Full review to follow. I was more familiar with Baby Dee than her touring partner, but Little Annie fit right into the same world of bent cabaret, presenting songs with twitchy swagger punctuated by the clomp of her cane-tip on the stage floor. For this show, they were augmented by locals Thom Gill and Mike Smith — or as they were dubbed by Baby Dee, "Mr. Nice Guitar" and "Mr. Nice Moustache".

Recording: Bruce Peninsula Trio/Neil Haverty

Artist: Bruce Peninsula Trio feat. Neil Haverty

Song: All Known Giants

Recorded at The Monarch Tavern, April 15, 2013.

Bruce Peninsula Trio - All Known Giants

Full review to follow. As the Bruce Peninsula Trio, Matt Cully, Misha Bower and Neil Haverty strip down some of the full band's songs down to their cores — but they also each take a turn or two at stepping up to the mic to play songs from their own "solo" endeavours. Here, Neil Haverty is backed by Bower's voice on one of his new compositions.

Recording: The Whirly Birds

Artist: The Whirly Birds

Song: Here to Stay

Recorded at Handlebar (Crosswires), April 14, 2013.

The Whirly Birds - Here to Stay

Full review to follow. Re-launching after a couple months away, Crosswires looks to have found a cozy new home. Shows will be every other Sunday, and are scheduled to start a litttle earlier and get done in time for everyone to get to bed and still be functional on Monday. Let's hope the sentiment of this song (featuring the locked-in rhythm section of Steve Krecklo and Mike Duffield) is a good omen for Crosswires' tenure. The Whirly Birds, meanwhile, now have a second single online for you to check out.

Recording: Moonwood

Artist: Moonwood

Song: Trans Martian Express

Recorded at Handlebar ("Crosswires"), April 14, 2013.

Moonwood - Trans Martian Express

Full review to follow. Moonwood, currently in something of a spacerock avant-boogaloo stage, toyed with perspectives of duration in a continuously grooving set. Very tasty — their new tape (and its corresponding release show) are recommended.

Recording: Nadja

Artist: Nadja

Song: [excerpt]*

Recorded at Polyhaus (Feast in the East 24), April 13, 2013.

Nadja - [first track, part 2]

Full review to follow. The Berlin expats might have been returning to their old hometown, but for the crowd it felt like a trip to Jupiter as the duo generated their heavy, heavy ambient drones.

* Does anyone know the title to this one? Please leave a comment! The set was played as a continuous piece, and I think there were two "songs" — this is the second half of the first one, which was about twenty-five minutes long in its entirety.

Recording: Slim Twig

Artist: Slim Twig

Song: Jack [Danava via U.S. Girls cover]

Recorded at Polyhaus ("Feast in the East 24"), April 13, 2013.

Slim Twig - Jack

Full review to follow. Remember back last year when Slim Twig was talking about embracing the pop process and cutting back on the noise? Well, on this night at least, he's zagged again. Backed by Meg Remy instead of his band, this set collapsed some of the partitions between Slim Twig, U.S. Girls and Cola Cola.
