Like all of us, Jennifer Castle is a shape-shifter, and her songs sometimes feel like expositions of the unresolved emotional antinomies between the careful gardener, planning for seasons yet to come and the footloose mendicant with nothin' to worry about except the road ahead, singing "I don't care about money / and I don't care about time / and I don't care about reason / and reason don't care much about me." Both the wanderer (just back from touring) and the nurturer (with her son in attendance) seemed equally happy to be playing this stripped-down library set at a utopian place where everything is free and friends clustered around to exchange a smile and a hug — ready on this night to lock the vagrant winter out and bolt her wandering in.
