Recording: Cosmic Homeostasis

Artist: Cosmic Homeostasis

Song: Vale of Avoca (Set 2) [excerpt]

Recorded in the Vale of Avoca (Ministry of Phonic Services' Back to School Field Trip), September 14, 2025.

Cosmic Homeostasis - Vale of Avoca (Set 2) [excerpt]

A wonderful and special day out! As part of Ministry of Phonic Services' September-long Back to School Field Trip festival, members of the Cosmic Homeostasis collective gathered underneath St. Clair Avenue, in the Ministry of Phonic Services' Back to School Field Trip excursion to the Vale of Avoca (perhaps the city's most fancifully-named ravine). Feeling a world removed from the city, the expanded group enfolded itself into the space, with several guest performers taking advantage of stones, sticks and other found objects (including the trusses of the bridge itself!) to add some environmental sounds.

The full ensemble for this performance was:

  • Allison Cameron - ukulele + NASA recording
  • Colin Cudmore - percussion
  • Dame Cook - MIDI synthesis/round objects
  • Dan Friedman - Kastl Drum, Amp, EQ, mixer feedback, wooden flute
  • Grace Scheele - toy melodica, recorder
  • Grant Smales - nightjar sounds
  • Heraclitus Akimbo - accordion, synth, pedals, water bottle
  • Ian McPhedran - guitar
  • Jaz Tsui - rocks
  • Jim Davis - digital synth
  • Juniper Mitchell - site-specific lithophone
  • Karen O'Keefe - vocals
  • Kat Estacio - kulintang, rock, bow, dried leaves, boy bawang, found metal, bridge underboob
  • Louis Pino - rocks and dirt
  • Maks - rocks, camera
  • Mike Filippov - wavedrum + found objects
  • Mira Martin-Gray - synth, jaw harp, kazoo
  • Niamh Girling - tampura, morchang
  • Nilan Perera - amplified acoustic guitar
  • Paul Newman - tenor saxophone
  • Phil Johnston - guitar + delay
  • Rob Cruickshank - electronics
  • Sonia Leung - violin, vocals
  • Sterling McPhedran - rocks in the river

As always, this performance has been archived on Bandcamp:

Contest: Labyrinth Ensemble with Ross Daly and Kelly Thoma

Labyrinth Ensemble with Ross Daly and Kelly Thoma

Saturday, November 8th @ Aga Khan Museum

In the seventh incarnation of their series of intensive workshops as preparations for a concert spectacular, the Labyrinth Ensemble has come full circle in a way. It was back in 2018, as the Labyrinth organization was growing its ambitions and gathering a community of musicians (but before the Ensemble itself was founded) that they brought Ross Daly (the founder of the original Labyrinth in Crete) and his longtime collaborator Kelly Thoma to Toronto to collaborate. That concert at Eastminster United Church saw the pair joined by locals Pedram Khavarzamini and Araz Salek as the This Tale of Ours Quartet, for a night of mesmerizing music.

This Tale of Ours Quartet - Little Black Dog + Neveser 14

This Tale of Ours Quartet - Synkathistos

Later this month, the pair return to share more wisdom with the full ensemble, which will lead to a tour reaching across Ontario — and starting off with a night at the Aga Khan. (And as always, the group is packed full of musicians that MFS-inclined folks will know well and love to see in action!)

TICKETS + MORE INFO

Tickets are $50 ($45 for Friends of the museum), with a limited number of rush tickets available for in-person purchase 30 minutes before the doors open. As with the past several Labyrinth shows at the Aga Khan, this show will almost certainly sell out!

CONTEST

Thanks to Labyrinth, I have a pair of tickets to give away for this show! To enter, shoot me an email to mechanicalforestsound@gmail.com, with "contest" in the title and your full name in the body. I'll randomly draw a winner at noon on Tuesday, November 4th.

Originally planned for TCB#101, a throwback re-creation of the series' very first show, this rescheduled set saw A.C. serve up some absorbing laptop-based electroacoustic collages, with found sounds including some deeply-garbled speech samples.

Brian Abbott - unknown [excerpt]

Brian Abbott brought a pair of microtonal guitars (just intonation and 31-tone), playing loosely-composed pieces fleshed out with improvisational elements. The just intonated electric brushed against some wonky rock dynamics, while this acoustic piece went down some other byways.

Monday Roundup #248

Community notes:

  • Hats off to the Music Gallery, now celebrating its 50th season of programming! That landmark is one of the frames for this week's X Avant Festival, though as is usual with the current MG, that retrospective bent is also thoroughly future-focused. (see listings below!)
  • Toronto venue watch: I don't know a lot of details yet, but I see that the space at 961 College, formerly home to the Smiling Buddha, is now operating as The Jama. It looks like the management of The Little Jerry are behind this enterprise and the listings on offer suggest they're using both the upstairs and basement spaces — plus they're hosting shows like this weekend's Ministry of Phonic Services presentation of Jaap Blonk, so these are promising signs.

Recording: Lavender Town

Artist: Lavender Town

Song: Song of Storms [composer: Koji Kondo]

Recorded at Sankofa Square (Intersection 2025: Day 2: All Day Music Marathon, August 30, 2025.

Lavender Town - Song of Storms

Back from a year's hiatus, the Intersection Festival was once again bringing some unconventional sounds to the unsuspecting public. The now formally-retitled Sankofa Square sports a decolonized name, but a slightly more carceral vibe — surrounded by metal fencing and closed off by gates right up 'til showtime, there was less of a random just-wander-through sense of invitation than there used to be.

There was also a slightly different curatorial vibe in effect. In the absence of Burn Down the Capital's Tad Michalak, Andrew Noseworthy stepped up as the main programmer, giving the day a flavour that'd be familiar to those following people | places | records, the "DIY genre-fluid 'zero profit' artists-first" label he is involved with.

"Jazz" has a long tradition of using popular forms as the frameworks for more exploratory musics, so it makes perfect sense that this twenty-first century band might be more drawn to, say, video game themes than Broadway numbers. The pieces they tackled were imbued with top-shelf musicianship, which might have helped to get the attention of passers-by (especially Luan Phung's guitar solos), but it was that populist material that helped gather a crowd in front of the stage.

This solo project mixes a pair of Shawn Mativetsky's passions — tabla and 80's John Carpenter-leaning synths. The former helps give the pieces a sense of momentum, straight into a neon-lit retrofuture.

Coming straight from the "heart" of the people | places sound, I had previously seen this modular ensemble in a more nascent formation — and though their numbers have grown, this was working in the same space of intracately-arranged compositions delicately swelling outwards and upwards.

Windsor's Bilal Nasser brought some elegant classical guitar moves tempered with contemporary technological flourishes (loops, ambient pads) and some airy vox that would twist outward into some concrète/collage zones to provide a thorny edge and quietly-insistent political sensibility.

Matthew Ramolo's long-running solo project was in a sort of "planetarium raga party" zone here, with some rhythmic insistence adding a sense of movement to the zones settling over the square.

The afternoon lead off with this quintet, operating with technical precision in rockband formation. Given that, they were at their best when they pushed into the sort of prog/fusion territory heard in this piece.

Monday Roundup #247

Community notes:

  • Toronto venue watch: The Imperial Pub is closing next month, set to be replaced by student housing. Besides being a proper old-fashioned bar/hangout, the small backroom was a really cosy spot to see a gig, and a place that I'd always wished was home to more shows. As it was, I saw some cool stuff there, and (thanks to Karen Ng and Somewhere There) put on one of the first shows I curated there.
