little window - Feel it all at once

It's telling that this group describes itself as an "art/music project" rather than a "band", given the wonderful amount of bricabrac (projections, tube televisions, papier maché masks, weird rubbery hands, etc., etc., etc.) they brought along for this gig. The visual/sculptural elements, as much as the music, are parts of singer/guitarist Eli Howey's vision, all lovingly hand-made with a DIY aesthetic. Taking the stage as a live unit in trio form (with Moonwood/Stargoon drummer Luca Capone in the grizzled veteran role), the band's recent songs had a pleasingly rough-around-the-edges brio.

This new-ish project from Jackson Darby (NPNP, Persons, Freaky Boos) and Rodolfo Rueda (CIBER1A) sees the latter on bass being processed the former's modular synth rig. Sometimes groovin' out and sometimes deploying percussive extended techniques, Rueda offered a wide range of sounds creating outputs varying bewteen post-punk plinks, glassy echos, zworps and synthbings.

When not making music that's as quiet as it is abstract, Holger Schoorl is often extending songforms with both arranged embellishments and improvisatory drift. This group (usually a trio alongside bassist Pete Johnston, but on this night in duo formation alongside trombonist Scott Thomson) hews to the latter m.o., ambling along with folk music melodies stretched out and decorated with wordless vocals.

Holger Schoorl will be playing (a "brand new piece tentatively called 'explaining myself to my in-laws'") at the Southern Cross' late set on Sunday, Ooctober 22nd alongside Tania Gill and Tomasz Krawowiak.]

Community notes:

• The Music Gallery's X Avant Festival is this week — long-serving as the unofficial end of summer/gateway into fall for the local musical calendar, this year's edition offers three nights of music that will definitely help to reconcile you to the sudden transition to long pants weather. And while you definitely can't go wrong at 918 Bathurst with Germaine Liu's candy-coated percussion party (Wednesday) or Yes No Wave's celebration of Indonesian experimental electronic music (Friday), I'm going to give myself a shout-out here and strongly recommend you do not miss Thursday's off-site shoestravaganza at the Bata Shoe Museum, which, somehow, I was invited to curate. There will be nine musicians performing, with the first half seeing acoustic solos/duos/trios spread throughout the galleries and the second half seeing a large-scale, electronically-processed collaborative set. It's really looking like a fun night!
  Meanwhile, besides the musical programming, Sunday sees "nerds are punk too", a "community roundtable discussion dedicated to breaking, building and dreaming" and making and holding spaces to create culture in these fractured times.

• Meanwhile, there's plenty going on otherwise, including Concrete Cabaret's Objecto Festival, taking over The Tranzac this weekend with two nights of experimental cabaret, with avant-puppetry and other artforms, plus music by Ronley Teper and the Lipliners!

• Also, AMBiENT PiNG's live community drone event DRONE:KLUB returns Thursday to the Long & McQuade Clinic Hall. All are welcome to participate in or experience the drones!
