A Josh Cole Trio + Strings feat. John Oswald - [set 2 excerpt]

Bassist Jash Cole has been experimenting lately with bringing in a miniature string section (here Nick Storring on cello and Aline Homzy on violin) to augment his ensembles. (The other components of the trio in this case were regular percussionist Blake Howard and special guest saxophonist John Oswald.) Moving from zones of quietude to shaking clatter, there were intruiging destabilizations all around here, held together as always with Cole in the calm centre.

After completing his Witches' Butter album as a solo endeavour, Kingston's Darvid Parker realized he'd need some more hands to bring it to life on stage, leading to the creation of this group bearing its name. Joined by Graham Beverly (guitar), Michael C. Duguay (electric bass + synths), and Arden Rogalsky (synths), the group headed up and down the 401 for a mini-tour, arriving in T.O. sounding like a band that'd been digging deep into their material. Fleshing out the album's pieces with a wider sound, there was still an elegant restraint here, staying true to the wide-eyed wonder of the album's inquisitive forest walks.

What has two harmonica players, a lap steel, and isn't a country band? The answer is not Stargoon, but also not Wenderly Park — although this one-off recombination included members of both, oscillating between dense drones and something more chaotic.

Ayal Senior continues to use his monthly residency slot to workshop his new batch of compositions, with arrangements slowly solidifying from month to month. Collaborators Kurt Newman (guitar) and Andrew Furlong (bass) are digging deeper into the pieces as well, and special guest Jay Anderson, sitting in on percussion, found the proper zone immediately.

Very nice work from effected bass clarinetist Piers Oolvai, exploring a number of pieces and using some pedals to expand the sonic space in ways that really serve the compositions — the reverb/delay in this one really fills in the sound quite satisfyingly.

Very exciting to see festival co-founder Bea Labikova presenting a bold new vision, taking her solo work with wind and electronics from its small-scale origins to a literal widescreen presentation, flanked by multiple projection screens showing footage from her arctic research journey. The sound in the room was similarly vast — this recording doesn't really capture how it filled up the space, but it gives some idea of the trajectory.

Closing out the third night of the Women From Space Festival, this trio played with purpose, moving from pointilist sketches to some quaking outbursts. Lotte Anker (soprano and tenor sax) was front and centre, but pianist Craig Taborn also held things together, linking sections of the continuous set with solo introspections while percussionist Chris Corsano, provided the thorny textures that gave flavour to the proceedings.

The Tranzac's Southern Cross Lounge ("Cosmic Country for Communists")

Kurt sings! Promising "sad ballads, shuffles and waltzes", this outing alongside frequent collaborators Andrew Furlong (bass) and Blake Howard (drums) saw Newman dipping into a deep well of country and folk classix to deliver plenty guitar solos (as expected) and vocal stylings (a surprise!). This pair of Buck Owens tunes that closed out the night helped to situate the whole thing somewhere on a highway between Austin and Bakersfield (and always, of course, in the Greater Psychic Nashville district).

[Cosmic Country for Communists will be back at The Tranzac tonight (April 6th), a week earlier than usual, with some comedy and bluegrass stylings.]

With Jasper Stadhouders in town to play the Women From Space Festival, I asked if he'd like to put together something else while he was around — and he came through with this incredible trio, adding his guitar work to Lori Freedman's clarinet/bass clarinet and Allison Cameron's no-input mixer. With crunches, scrapes, flutters and mutters all around, this was a totally fabulous time.

Marilyn Yogarajah (trumpet, effects) put this set together, bringing along Lucas Finkeldey (synths) and Steve Dillon (melodica). The latter added a thick layer of dubsauce to the others' atmospherics, the results expanding spacewards from the roots to the branch-tips.
