Nicole Rampersaud - [excerpt from first piece]A canny selection to open the night for Ken Vandermark's Made To Break, Nicole Rampersaud offered a solo set bursting with energy and creative explorations. Her extended techniques brought to mind the work of her c_RL bandmates, from the set-opening Honeytone amp feedback shredding heard at the outset here to the end that saw her forgo blowing to simply attempt to shake some sound loose from her horn, in the manner of Germaine Liu's full-body percussion. In between there were sounds soft and loud, notes pure and broken.
