Recorded at The Tranzac (Main Hall), June 14, 2025.

Bile Sister - unknown

It'd been a stretch since I'd caught a performance from Julie Reich's long-running weird-pop project. Reich has been busy exploring "microtonal rock" and other theoretical advances but stepped right into a set that felt both like continuation and expansion of Bile Sister's past work. With bassist Chris Worden and a synthesist joining her in trio format, Reich sang with a new confidence in delivering some disco bangers, including an electro cover of "All I Have to Do is Dream" with special guest Zoë Alexis-Abrams as well as this Young Marble Giants-inflected number.

Recording: Body Double

Artist: Body Double

Song: unknown*

Recorded at The Tranzac's Southern Cross Lounge (Somewhere There Creative Music Festival – Show 1 late-night afterparty), February 24, 2017.

Body Double - unknown

Once again, the Somewhere There Music Festival offered an oasis of local creativity, tightly bundled into five events over three days. Leading off, as always, with a community member's reflections, the first show featured a talk from David Dacks on building relationships and finding a project's true purpose while striving to program forward-looking music. Healing Power was given the task of programming the late-night sets in the Southern Cross after things had wrapped up in the Main Hall, presenting the debut of this new collaboration between New Positions' Vic Cheong and Bile Sister's Julie Reich. There were elements of each of their bands' sounds in play here, in a set with a few already-polished gems (like this melodica-driven reggae number) alongside some tracks that felt more like works in progress. "Don't show me the rough cut, show me the final version," a sampled/looped conversation between the pair cheekily intoned between songs. That recorded banter was a repeating presence, making this feel like a glimpse into the pair's scrapbook, mindspace and practice space with chatter about identity and reality being processed into Bechdel-tested avant-pop.

Recording: Remedy Malahyde

Artist: Remedy Malahyde

Song: unknown*

Recorded at Dundas Video (Track Could Bend #12), March 1, 2016.

Remedy Malahyde - unknown

When I asked Julie Reich (known for her work in Bile Sister) to play TCB, I thought she might bring something like her solo electronic alter ego Dohn Valley to the show. Instead, she took the invitation to experiment or collaborate in new ways to heart and showed up as half of a new duo with Natalie Logan (known both for her visual work as well as past musical endeavours). Playing their first show together, the pair had staked out their own space of Shaggs-y drum-beats, minimalist guitar and reverbed-out co-vocals. Sounding a bit like, say, Golden Triangle covering U.S. Maple, they stated that this one-off had achieved escape velocity, so look for more to come from this pairing.

[Track Could Bend returns to Dundas Video on Tuesday, April 5th for its First Anniversary Spectacular, which will feature an all-star assortment of players from the series' first year both in some new recombinations as well in instant "bands-from-a-hat" improvised sets.]

Recording: Chandra

Artist: Chandra

Song: Kate

Recorded at Jam Factory, November 12, 2015.

Chandra - Kate

Last year's initial encounter between Chandra Oppenheim and Bile Sister (celebrating the re-issue of her 1980 Transportation EP) has blossomed into a full-on new wave tour with a local all-star band that featured Julie Reich, David Jones, Victoria Cheong, Jesse Locke, and Nyles Miszczyk. Dressed in stylish black, they generated a serious synth and melodica-driven new wave groove in a tightly-paced half hour set. No time for chit-chat, just dance!

Bile Sister - Dissolving in the Neck

When I caught Bile Sister in its newish duo reformulation at the Healing Power Summer Bass party back in July it felt a little like a work in progress, but now things are shaping up very nicely. With Julie Reich playing bass in addition to her other sonic manipulations and David Jones on keyb and drumpad there's a stripped-down rigour to the tunes, but still space for some squelchy funk explorations — and, as with this one, for groovy blipulations as well.

* Thanks to David Jones for passing along the title to this one!

Recording: Dohn Valley

Artist: Dohn Valley

Song: unknown*

Recorded at The Tranzac – Southern Cross Lounge ("HPR Presents"), April 22, 2015.

Dohn Valley - unknown

When scheduling/calendar trouble necessitated a last-minute reshuffle of Healing Power's monthly Tranzac showcase, Bile Sister's Julie Reich stepped up to help, bringing out this band new solo electronic project for a preview of some works in progress. She commented that there'd be vocals yet to come for the three pieces that she played, but the skeletons of these new songs are pretty listenable on their own. Stay tuned for more developments.

Six years/Six pack: Jesse Locke

MFS has turned six! My introductory thoughts on this landmark can be found here, but long story short: I asked some folks to pick some of their favourites to help me celebrate.

Today's list is from Jesse Locke, a Weird Canadian, writer and drummer who I first met in person when he slipped some Tonetta in a DJ set.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Joe Strutt is the hardest working human in the Toronto music biz. Mechanical Forest Sound is a dizzyingly exhaustive archive of live recordings from left-of-centre shows, and I'm honoured to take part in this celebration of its sixth birthday. I typically spend time on the site listening to excerpts of gigs I was unable to attend, but for this post I’ve decided to write about six personal fave performances where I was there, mannn…

Simply Saucer - Mole Machine

The Saucer is one of my all time desert island top five bands. Since moving to Toronto, I've had the great pleasure of working with their original members on a few different projects, and it’s been a total blast hearing them tear through the songs that are embedded in my bones. This set at the Ty Segall after-party featured the band's CanCon superstar line-up of founding singer/guitarist Edgar Breau and bassist Kevin Christoff joined by The Killjoys' Mike Trebilcock on guitar/skull theremin and Blue Rodeo/The Garbagemen's Glenn Milchem on the skins. The Mole Machine reigns supreme!

Zacht Automaat - unknown

Zee almighty Hamilton-borne Zacht Automaat follow in the footsteps of Steeltown's O.G. electro-rockers Simply Saucer with their own baroque brand of lysergic liftoffs. I haven't missed a chance to see their twice yearly live shows, and it seems this set at Feast in the East's former Polyhaus venue was the first time both Joe and I were cleansed in their waters. Blah blah blah... Just listen in.

Tenderness - unknown

After a stretch spent in Winnipeg, Chrissy Reichert's recent return to Toronto has been a glorious thing. This gig on the first night of DDL's fifth anniversary weekend (capped off with a once-in-a-lifetime appearance by The Space Lady) served as the debut for her latest collection of block-rockin' devotional bangers, which have twisted and screeched into new shapes with each passing performance. I remain the number one Tenderness fan and can't wait to hear where these songs transport to next.

Matt "Doc" Dunn - [excerpt]

Doc Dunn is a dusty jewel in Toronto’s musical treasure chest, and sometimes you gotta dig deep to find him. This night at Double Double Land (starting to see a trend where I spend my time?) was the release party for his Tecumseth LP, with a dreamy performance joined by regular collaborators Jonathan Adjemian, Isla Craig and Brandon Valdivia. Imagine Loren Mazzacane Connors sipping from the cosmic brew of Alice Coltrane, or just ignore everything in this world entirely and float away.

Darlene Shrugg - Freedom Comes in a Plastic Card

Darlene Shrugg is the East Side all-star band made up of members from Tropics, Ice Cream and U.S. Girls. Their supercharged glam-stomp is one of the greatest things going in town these days, and "Freedom Comes in a Plastic Card" (there's yer song title, Joe) gets wedged in my head all the time. Bonus shout out to the rest of the Frankensteined collaborations at All Toronto's Parties 2: Bong Water, Abra Cadaver, Wildlife Rodeo, and a few truly fun sets I played myself.

Bile Sister with Chandra - Get It Out Of Your System

The shock of the new and a celebration of the shocking unknown came together for the reissue release party of Chandra's Transportation. Bile Sister's set of originals delivered the heat, but it was this truly rare onstage appearance from Chandra Oppenheim (running through songs she originally recorded in 1980 as an art-punk 11-year-old) that brought the house down. There's not much I can say to properly express my gratitude to Joe for capturing yet another fantastic night of music, otherwise lost to the sands of time and fading memories.

You can always click on the tags below to look for more stuff from these artists. Has there been a half-dozen songs posted here that made an impact on you? If you'd like to get in on the action and make a list, feel free to send me an email: mechanicalforestsound@gmail.com.

Song: Haagen Baadz

Recorded at The Great Hall ("Long Winter: Year Three, Volume Three"), January 9, 2015.

Bile Sister - Haagen Baadz

Under the glare of a watchful neon eye, this was a night to celebrate for Julie Reich and her warped-pop crew, marking the appearance of this new tune (which manages to pack a complicated mini-suite into two-and-a-half minutes) as one flip of the month's split 7" single. Even if it wasn't as confusing/alluring as the surreal vibes in the song's new video, Reich managed to call the crowd forward and get a bit of a dance party going.

Bile Sister with Chandra - Get It Out Of Your System

You think you walk through a timewarp... Back in 1980, twelve-year-old Chandra Oppenheim fronted a band of uptown post-punk types and released a 12" that would eventually become the sort of overlooked obscurity valued by crate-diggers. Cantor, a small Canadian label, would reissue the album in 2008, and the songs would be a source of inspiration to local musician Julie Reich. Bringing things full circle, her band Bile Sister backed Chandra in a joyful set celebrating a new re-issue of the album.

Pulling together the various parts of the show, here's one of Reich's own songs (from last year's FRUITS comp), a Chandra tune that had previously worked its way into Bile Sister's live sets, and one from the set-capping collaboration. Word is that Chandra is getting some new music ready for the world, and I've also heard rumblings that there was a proper video capture of this show, so keep an eye out for that.

Song: Track Your Transit

Recorded at Geary Lane (Summer Sesh @ Geary Lane), July 26, 2014.

Bile Sister - Track Your Transit

Who says we can't have nice things? Local promotion duo Man Finds Fire launched their new venue with an afternoon party, showing off a beautiful space nestled in a warehouse-like building in the industrial strip by Dufferin and Dupont. The main floor features a large (but not imposingly cavernous) open area, with a bar and couches and tall white walls that give the whole thing the feel of a modern art gallery. There's even a comfy upstairs patio with a nice view of the railway tracks and the city beyond. Recently used for film work, the room also sounds more like an intimate hall than a reverberating cave. It's a bit off the beaten track, but well-worth heading out for. Promising to specialize in more experimental sounds (their next couple shows are already announced), let's wish MFF great success and a long tenure at Geary Lane.

The afternoon opened with Julie Reich's squelch/funk project Bile Sister in a drummer-less trio format. The ever-evolving band continues to elongate their grooves, as demonstrated by a song that's now double the length of its recorded incarnation.

Songs: Pigdaters + We Caught The Chill*

Recorded at Comfort Zone ("All Toronto's Parties 2"), May 24, 2014.

Abra Cadaver - Pigdaters

Abra Cadaver - We Caught The Chill

Full review to follow. The first ATP show brought together bands selected by five different live music purveyors in a cool mix'n'match marathon. Upping the ante, the night-time portion follow-up brought a full line-up of recombinant bands (some of them special one-offs) to create a completely unique night. (It should also be noted that this also served as Wavelength's 600th show. Congratulations Wavelength!)

Julie Reich played in the live version of Wolfcow before her solo project Bile Sister took off, so it wasn't too much of a leap to see her co-fronting this amalgamated unit with Greydyn Wolfcow. But together, they took on the air of a Bizarro World Sonny and Cher, pumping out off-kilter pop nuggets in bulk, tossing lyrical fragments back and forth. There's a lot of longstanding bands that can't come up with as many hooks and ideas as this putative one-off.

You can also check out some more pictures from the day on the MFS facebook page.

Bile Sister - On the Cheetah Sleeper

Full review to follow. Bile Sister (the bandonym of Julie Reich) sounds a bit like Sir Nose D'Voidoffunk tweaking in a back alley because he saw Bernie Worrell being attacked by rabid chipmunks. This is a pop project, but pop with beats peeking out from under layers of wobbly muck. There were some new songs in the set, as well as a new tape just out now.
