When I first caught Deciduous a couple years back, it was still Vanessa Benoit's "new band" (and she was still Vanessa Hanson, formerly of Vanessa's Entire Heart and other endeavours). Now, the psych/folk duo with Jason Benoit (guitar, banjo) has become a trio with drummer Chris Marr along for the ride — and settled into their sound, the group has an album to their credit. The music evokes back road trips into the woods, where mystery, mystical secrets, or some strange menace might beckon.

Full review to follow. Vanessa Hanson, who used to perform solo as Vanessa's Entire Heart, is now a duo with Jason Benoit. (And they were joined here for most of the set by Stacey Sproule.) The feedback from Hanson's guitar is more restrained than it used to be, but with her partners she's finding new ways to deconstruct folk music. [The group will also be playing Crosswires at Handlebar on Sunday.]
