Bands don't last forever. One gets used to the natural cycle of things, but the announcement that The Bevs' vinyl release show (for last year's excellent Brutal) was also serving as their farewell was a bit of a shock. Still, even if it leaves a pang of regret for songs not written and shows not played, maybe there's something to be said for going out on top, and leaving with a big party in a room filled with friends. Aside from a quick "we're never playing here again!" quip while sorting out some recalcitrant gear, the band mostly let the music do the talking, playing pretty much everything in their songbook one last time. This was a damn fine band that I was glad to get to see and document — all the best to 'em going forward.

For a band that I used to see quite a lot, it was a long gap for me since I last caught The Bevs in action. Now, with their debut album on the street, there's a few new tweaks evident in their sound, including the deployment of some harmony vox in this one. There's a confident precision in their live sound now that might force them to amend their "junk punk" self-description.

Six years/Six pack: Ian Chai

MFS has turned six! My introductory thoughts on this landmark can be found here, but long story short: I asked some folks to pick some of their favourites to help me celebrate.

Today's list is from Ian Chai, the organizational force/grim taskmaster behind Buzz Records.

I promised myself that these selections wouldn't be an incestuous circle jerk: I failed spectacularly, but it wasn't for lack of effort.

As I worked my way through the voluminous pages of MFS, I was truly struck by how many amazing and formative moments I had shared with Joe. And as the years have passed, I've come to consider him not so much a friend, but rather a plausible alibi for my whereabouts.

Here's to 6 years and many more, Mr. Strutt!

In many ways, this set was ground zero for my start in the music industry – so many feels – ask me about it sometime.

Weaves - Take a Dip

The Long Winter started taking fire code/capacity regulations seriously after this one – rager.

Full review to follow. The Beverleys have just added a new single to their official discography, but they have a whole buncha others as yet untapped in their setlist. This one leans on a familiar little guitar change, and as with the last time I saw the band at The Garrison, Steph's drums were especially thunderous.

Full review to follow. It took a little longer than anticipated, but the wait for the Bevs' first EP was well worth it. Their set included a nice stack of as-yet-unreleased songs, too, so there's gonna be more to come beyond this three-song blast. In the meantime, now with a tape to their name the band will be taking their tunes beyond the city.

What was originally slated as an EP release party was re-cast as one for a single with the announcement that the band is casting their lot with the Buzz Records family, where they'll be joining some of the city's finest combinators of scuzzy noise and catchy hooks. That means a bit more of a wait to hear the rest of their recordings, but the silver lining is that there'll be another release party coming up! If the crowd at this one was any combination, they're gonna need a bigger venue next time around.

Full review to follow. I can't believe I waited so long to check out this local grunge-punk trio again, because holy hells they're pretty good. A two-guitars-no-bass lineup might bring Sleater-Kinney to mind, but they have their own angle on distortion/momentum pop. They've been patiently playing piles of shows and it's time that more folks know about 'em. There's an EP coming up, but right now, the best place to catch them is on stage (or maybe on youtube). They've got a couple NXNE shows lined up, so that makes it easy for me to make my first enthusiastic recommendation for this year's festival.
