Recording: Eucalyptus

Artist: Eucalyptus

Song: UP Express

Recorded at The Tranzac's Main Hall (Joe's 50th Birthday), April 25, 2024.

Eucalyptus - UP Express

Sometimes, when a Big Event beckons, you just have to seize the initiative and throw the party that you want to be a part of. Hence this little shindig, with a pretty fabulous lineup of local luminaries and a room full of well-wishers — what more could you ask for?

With so many moving parts in this band, there's a bit of flexibility with who you might see surrounding Brodie West from show to show — but it was a real treat to see the band at full strength here, three drummers on stage and crowd favourite Nicole Rampersaud up front. There were some classics tackled that got the dancefloor bumpin' as well as some newer pieces, including this jammer from the group's next album (a future classic, whether you all it the "up" express or the "you-pee" express) as well as a scintillating preview of a new collaoration with Vic Cheong (a.k.a. New Chance) bringing a tune for West to arrange.

You can check out some more from this set over on youtube:

#mfs15 playlist: Del Stephen

MFS has turned fifteen! My introductory thoughts on this landmark can be found here, but long story short: I asked some folks from the MFS community to help me celebrate by picking some selections from the archives, and possibly sharing some thoughts or stories.

Today's list is from Del Stephen.

i'm very glad to be participating in this 15-year anniversary celebration of a real good thing: talking about mechanical forest sound (MFS). i've said it many times before, to various people who enjoy music, as well as joe strutt himself, and still i worry that it hasn't been said enough just how immensely valuable MFS is. as a fellow sound recording archivist, i have to believe that the kind of (life's!) work that joe has been doing all these years with MFS is the kind that will drastically increase in value as time goes on, just like so many of the recordings/posts on the site already have, i would say. honestly, i'd even be willing to say that it's thanks to archives like MFS that certain events will eventually become what we consider to be positively 'historic' (and i've touched on this a little bit in 1 of my selections). so here i am wondering aloud and inviting joe to respond when it suits him: let us know what we can do to help ensure MFS continues to serves the community (+ extended community) for years to come. thank you joe strutt for your continued devotion and for being my friend.
see below for some long-winded (as per usual) scribbled notes on 5 selections from the archives. the common thread is that i happened to deeply enjoy being at each of them. next birthday party i'll pick a few that i did not attend (there are so many that i've experienced solely through joe's recorded excerpts).

Zacht Automaat - Lay Lady Lay

Recorded at Matt Durant Studio (Feast In The East 64), September 23, 2017.

this was the best! matt durant's studio is/was quite far away from the apartment i lived at the time; i recall deciding to take the long way there to properly charge up for this show (a straight queen street car from 1 end of the line to the other...all the way to the depot, wow!). it was a packed house for feast in the east. and yummy food- maybe there was a samosa or 2 left by the time i arrived (late, but just in time for this set by 1 of my favourites). listening back today, i'm still bobbing my head in every direction! i love when music makes me laugh because of how good it is, especially at a show, and i definitely laughed a lot at this 1. colin fisher blew a hole in the ceiling with his saxophone and grasshopper was all over the place with his camcorder. 'lay lady lay' to end the set made me feel happy; it was a sweet interpretation of the tune and a wonderful time. i remember 1 of the first things i noticed upon arriving was seeing what i presumed to be a couple of joe's recorders positioned up on a fireplace mantle(?) or some sort of shelf on a wall opposite the stage. it was a real good and safe spot, and i was glad to prop my own portable tape recorder right up there too. thank you zacht automaat for always leaving everything out there on the court and for defending your championships approximately once a year.

Karen Ng - [excerpt]

Recorded at a house party, November 2, 2019.

this was up around dufferin/davenport in the basement of andrew finlay stewart's, a great friend and creative partner of mine. it was a party and then there'd be music. a lot of people huddled up in this tiny living room (or at least it felt tiny for the amount of people that had filled it), without being able to make such a choice, i happened to be sat right in front of karen ng's decided 'stage' and there was nowhere for me to run. so i sat there and enjoyed this set very much, no choice (and no choice necessary) but to welcome the warm sonic embrace/blast/whispers of her saxophone. i remember there were a lot of friends, friends of friends, and friends of friends of friends in attendance. the next time that i witnessed karen playing a solo set was the complete opposite: alone on the couch in the kitchen area of arrayspace while her and the rest of the audience sat on the other side of the closed door. a story for another time. thank you karen ng for every note and for always being real.

Off World - unknown

Recorded at Ratio (Off World LP 1 Release Weekend – Night 3), October 23, 2016.

i went to this show by myself and didn't know anybody that was there, at least not personally, as i knew a bunch of local artists in attendance but they surely didn't know who i was. i recognized joe though, which indicated that i was indeed in the right place at the right time. just a few minutes into the off world set, i fell asleep on the floor (or on some cushion) and ended up drifting in and out of sleep multiple times throughout the show. i have a funny memory of joe chuckling as he noticed me waking up in a somewhat startled state at 1 point before passing out again. and unless i have it mixed up with the only other time i attended a show at ratio, i also have a vivid memory of seeing mike smith in the kitchen, who i also hadn't formally met at that time, but who offered me a friendly smile. thank you sandro perri and lorenz peter for the off world dreaming and for every song (if you noticed me sleeping during your set i hope i did not offend).

Orechin/Fraser - unknown

Recorded at Wenona Lodge (Track Could Bend #52), July 2, 2019.

i just loved this set by alexei orechin and nick fraser at track could bend so much- i guess enough to still remember it 5 years later. it was hot in that basement, and probably thunderstormed earlier in the day as i noticed it always did (Without fail) every 1st tuesday of the month for a long time. i was really blissing out in my seat and remember having 1 of those moments where i was moving/swaying in body and mind. seriously hard to believe the piece was only 12 or 13 minutes - felt like a lifetime. this was also back when 241 pizza at bloor/havelock had 2 slices + a pop for $1.75 and a big window banner so the whole neighbourhood knew what was up. people would travel from other parts of the city just for the deal. and listening back now, that perfect splash when nick fraser enters the fold is like opening the can of pop and taking that first sip (i'm not really a pop drinker, but it was more expensive if you just bought the 2 slices on its own). thank you alexei orechin and nick fraser for this particularly good time and for often playing well with others.

Nicole Rampersaud - [excerpt]

Recorded at The Baby G (Track Could Bend #39), June 5, 2018.

i can't tell you how many times i've brought up this set in conversation since it happened. i recall there only being a handful of us in attendance, though i could be wrong, and it should be stated that this (obviously) has nothing to do with the incredible music that nicole rampersaud offered us on this date. that being said, i bring up this (possible) fact because over the years i've come to realize that some of my favourite concerts are ones where at some point during the set, while listening to the music, i catch myself looking around the room, noticing each individual audience member, then drawing my visual attention back to the artist, and thinking something like "hah, this is wild, we are the lucky ones!" - i wonder if you do this too? of course there are a ton of shows that come to mind where this has happened, and it seems to me that whether these gigs are recorded/archived or not truly makes no difference to the fact that in another world or in front of another audience or at a different time in history they might be considered 'legendary'. anyway, i'm rambling! thank you nicole rampersaud for all your music and for your kindness.

Recording: Ronley Teper & The Lipliners

Artist: Ronley Teper & The Lipliners

Song: Women in Space

Recorded at The Tranzac's Main Hall (Women From Space Festival 2022 – Night 3), April 30, 2022.

Ronley Teper & The Lipliners - Women in Space

For the past three years, the Women From Space Festival has been an excellent encapsulation of its moment. Coming on the cusp of the First Big Lockdown, the 2020 Festival is remembered by many as the last event of the beforetimes, while last year's "hologram edition" was an elegant solution to the flatness of livestreams. And now, this year's Festival had to bear all the relief and angst of "returning to live" at this uncertain mid-point of the pandemic. Presented with joy and community spirit over four nights, the Festival was a chance to run into seldom-seen familiar faces and to hear a dizzying variety of sounds.

Ronley Teper brought a fabulous lineup of Lipliners (Tania Gill, keys; Sarah Shugarman, violin; Carlie Howell, bass; Nicole Rampersaud, trumpet; and Tim Posgate, banjo/guitar) to tackle a couple old faves, some arguments from last year's Everyone Loves A Good Story, and this improvised science fair project in the spirit of the Festival hosting the set.

Recording: c_RL with Raven Chacon

Artist: c_RL with Raven Chacon

Song: [excerpt]

Recorded at The Music Gallery @ 918 Bathurst (Raven Chacon mini-fest – Night 2), April 13, 2019.

c_RL with Raven Chacon - [excerpt]

Three nights examining the work of composer/musician Raven Chacon from different angles served as an interesting mirror to the X Avant festival earlier in the season. I wasn't able to make the first night, with the Array Ensemble surveying some of Chacon's chamber pieces, but I was eager for this night. Geographic dispersion has meant that c_RL is not performing together much right now, and the special occasion-ness of this reunion was enhanced with the trio's first (as far as I know) collaborative set. Their soundscape of noises and buzz-bursts was a friendly terrain for Chacon to add some guitar-sounds and cassette crackles.

At this posting, the archived livestream of the full concert is still available online:

Recording: Joseph Shabason

Artist: Joseph Shabason

Song: Treat it Like a Wine Bar

Recorded at Array Space (Invocation Presents), January 10, 2019.

Joseph Shabason - Treat it Like a Wine Bar

Joseph Shabason's Anne can be viewed as more a development in continuity with his previous Aytche album, but there are still striking developments here. Foremost among those (and in addition to its ample technical merits) is its deeper and more personal emotional palette, weaving in fragments of interviews with his mother (the titular Anne) on the subjects of family, identity and "perfection" in the face of a degenerative illness. This special release show gained poignancy with Anne's presence, getting a chance to see her son presenting this intricate and beautiful music to a packed house.

Shabason's backing band for his hometown shows can expand and contract depending on who's available, and this night saw him being joined by Hugh Marsh (violin), Nicole Rampersaud (trumpet), Thom Gill (guitar/synth/piano), Phil Melanson (percussion), Kieran Adams (samples) and Bram Gielan (synth/bass/piano). That talented and deeply flexible group allowed a lush presentation of the material that rivalled the album's intricate arrangements. The selection here (which closed out the set as it does the album) was presented as a "placid sendoff", a gentle reminder that sometimes our difficulties can be ameliorated by looking at things in the best light.

[Joseph Shabason will be opening for Laraaji at the Toronto Spiritualist Temple on Friday, April 12th.]

Recording: Sandro Perri

Artist: Sandro Perri

Song: [excerpt from new piece]

Recorded at Array Space (Invocation Presents), January 10, 2019.

Sandro Perri - [excerpt from new piece]

Having seen Sandro Perri present the material from his latest album both solo and with band, I was curious as to whether we'd be seeing another wrinkle on the infinite songwriting of "In Another Life". Instead, playing an opening set for Joseph Shabason's woozy ambient album release, Perri zagged and presented a large-ensemble drift-work of his own. Borrowing Nicole Rampersaud from Shabason's band, he was otherwise joined by regular collaborators Blake Howard, Thomas Hammerton and Josh Cole. It's the latter who helps tie this whole piece together, with a delicious little bass-riff that keeps bubbling up to the surface.

The presence of Cole and Rampersaud also links this to the more abstract work he'd been doing in an un-named quartet with that pair plus Alison Cameron. This was apparently the first time this piece was shared with an audience, so hopefully there will be more chances to delve into its mysterious drift.

Recording: c_RL

Artist: c_RL

Songs: [trio piece for keyboards] [composer: Allison Cameron] + [excerpt from 1st piece] + Stick a Mic In It + [4th piece]

Recorded at Array Space (Allison Cameron Mini-Festival, Night 2), November 24, 2018.

c_RL - [trio piece for keyboards]

c_RL - [excerpt from 1st piece]

c_RL - Stick a Mic In It

c_RL - [4th piece]

How do you generate a sense of occasion for a band that's often as informal as c_RL? Some of this show's extra grandeur came simply from the venue, with Allison Cameron able to haul out some rarely-deployed gear from her studio at Array Space. That certainly informed her night-opening solo set, where she sat between two tables in a V formation filled with a selection of musical implements — and that extra gear came in handy as Nicole Ramersaud and Germaine Liu were called up to close out the opening half by playing a scored piece for keyboards (including melodica and toy accordion).

That also hinted at a running theme of seeing divergent strands, like parellel universe versions of c_RL playing chamber music or, a bit later on, rocking out like a noise band in "Stick a Mic in It", a no-wave tune dedicated to The Reveries. (There was also an unexpected and joyful tribute to trumpeter Lina Allemano as well.) The set covered a lot of ground, from Santana featuring Rob Thomas all the way to The Police. Er, no, wait, those were just snatches of Q107 being picked up by an amplifier. But they fit in as well, with the trio's eerie sounds engraved like a palimpsest over the monoculture.

Recording: Array Ensemble

Artist: Array Ensemble (with Nicole Rampersaud and Germaine Liu)

Song: Kid Baltan [excerpt] [composer: Allison Cameron]

Recorded at Array Space (Allison Cameron Mini-Festival, Night 1), November 23, 2018.

Array Ensemble - Kid Baltan [excerpt]

This season's presentations from Array reflect the interests of (now former) Artistic Director Martin Arnold, so along with the return of the Rat-Drifting music series, it was no surprise to see this two-night celebration of Allison Cameron. The pair of shows were constructed to let various faucets of Cameron's work play off each other, so this night of compositions and graphic scores for chamber ensemble also incorporated her bandmates in c_RL for some of the pieces. They were perhaps most prominent in "Momentum", a newly-commissioned piece, but also contributed to this one as well. "Kid Baltan" had made its debut at the Music Gallery's Gaudeamus Deconstructed event a few years ago and bears a dedication to Louis Andreissen, whose influence can be especially felt in the opening section of percussive exclamation-point jolts before settling down a little into the bricolage heard here.

As of this posting, the whole night's proceedings, including a pre-show artist talk can be seen on the archived livestream of the event:

Recording: c_RL

Songs: [excerpt from set 1, 1st piece] + [edited excerpt from set 2, 2nd piece]

Recorded at The Tranzac (Southern Cross Lounge), September 19, 2018.

c_RL - [excerpt from set 1, 1st piece]

c_RL - [edited excerpt from set 2, 2nd piece]

Just a l'il potato chip party to celebrate the transition of this group from being a "Toronto trio" to a "Canadian trio" with trumpeter Nicole Rampersaud preparing to decamp to the East Coast. The always-casual Southern Cross vibes (with the occasional repeated instruction from a hypnotist bleeding through from the Main Hall) revealed a band that's really on top of their game, telepathy-wise.

With Germaine Liu off to one side, dressed in white behind her drumkit and Allison Cameron and Rampersaud clad in black (and with no shortage of strange devices strewn aboot them) it looked like some Spy vs. Spy schemes were about to unfold. "You're upside down... you're upside down," the hypnotist intones as the music falls suddenly quiet, right before the ringing chimes of metal bells and bowls and the toy accordion seep back up.

[Canadian trio c_RL will take the stage as part of an Allison Cameron mini-festival taking place at Array Space on November 23rd and 24th. The first night will feature "a major new work by Cameron commissioned by Array, written for our ensemble combined with... Germaine Liu and Nicole Rampersaud" while the second night will have some AC solo and c_RL trio action.]

Spencer Cole/Josh Cole/Nicole Rampersaud/Colin Fisher - [set 1, 2nd piece excerpt]

Spencer Cole/Josh Cole/Nicole Rampersaud/Colin Fisher - [set 2, 1st piece excerpt]

Outside, it was like soup — a day that wasn't so extremely hot as overpoweringly humid. Late into evening it still felt super sticky-clammy outside, the barest hint of a breeze only making the night feel hotter. Out on the patio, this quartet conveyed all of that musically, with some sultry improvised fusion jams featuring bursts of excitement overtaken by dreamy languidity. Essentially an expended version of a trio that I'd seen the month before at The Tranzac, but adding a fourth corner and some damp, heavy atmosphere gave everything a rather different vibe.

Artist: Joseph Shabason

Song: Aytche

Recorded at The Baby G (TONE Festival), June 5, 2018.

Joseph Shabason - Aytche

The ensemble that Joseph Shabason has assembled to present his Aytche material live has tended to fluctuate in size and membership around the same core, but on this night, there was lots of room to explore textures and stretch out pieces with Phil Melanson, Thom Gill, Bram Gielen and Nicole Rampersaud on hand. This extended version of the album's title track contains some beautifully-lyrical work from Nicole Rampersaud (which was, itself, quite a departure from the solo sounds she had explored earlier that evening.)

Song: [excerpt]

Recorded at The Baby G (Track Could Bend #39), June 5, 2018.

Nicole Rampersaud - [excerpt]

In between homes, the TONE festival was kind enough to let Track Could Bend share its space at The Baby G for an extra-early outing before their event. A touch less intimate than the typical TCB surroundings (though brought in a little closer by bringing the action down off the stage), the trade-off was a chance to have an excellent sound-tech and a big PA to listen to some electroacoustic explorations. With a tight schedule to adhere to, it also made sense to make use of The Baby G's front room for some acoustic sounds while switching over the more electronic sets in the back. The sort of place you might walk through while on the way into a show without really looking at it, it was a treat to have a listening experience in the venue's front space, with its windowed façade giving a panorama of traffic, pedestrians, and seagulls to illustrate Rampersaud's trumpet investigations.

[The next Track Could Bend, with sets from Debashis Sinha, Luyos MC and No Seas, will be taking place at its new home in the basement of Wenona Lodge on Tuesday, August 7th.]

Recorded at The Tranzac (Southern Cross Lounge), May 16, 2018.

Octopus Curls - [first set, second piece]

Octopus Curls - [second set, fourth piece]

A slightly-different flavour of octopus this time out, with curlers Nicole Rampersaud and Allison Cameron joined by only singular quadruped percussionist Mark Zurawinski. As a crowd trailed past into the Main Hall to be mesmerized by a hypnotist, the trio cast their own enchantment of honks, theremin-ish buzzings, feedback sputters, clonk-clicking, wobbly ukulele and harmonica bleats.

Recording: Joseph Shabason

Artist: Joseph Shabason

Song: November*

Recorded at The Garrison (Wavelength Winter Festival 18 – Night 3), February 18, 2018.

Joseph Shabason - November

This year's Wavelength birthday celebration was more restrained than usual, sticking to one venue for three nights and having no extra daytime activities. That left the work to transforming the events to something more than just a "regular" night at a show to scene-setters like General Chaos and Roxanne Ignatius. The festival's final night was the most musically eclectic, the acts connected by an exploratory thread.

Anyone who showed up late missed the festival's best set, with Joseph Shabason bringing another edition of his ever-shifting backup collective to the stage for some embracing ambient atmospherics. (This time out saw him backed by Nicole Rampersaud on trumpet, Thom Gill on keys, Phil Melanson on percussion, Bram Gielen on fretless bass and Kieran Adams on Octapad. These are all top-notch local musicians who you should be investigating if you don't already know their other work.) This new piece is based on a keyboard loop by Italian composer Gigi Masin.

* Thanks to J.S. for passing along the title to this one.

[The next Wavelength Festival is already on the distant horizon, with Camp Wavelength once more contained to the mainland and landing at Garrison Common on August 18th and 19th. Meanwhile, the next few monthly shows, co-productions (as well as a cool Toronto Post-Punk in the Early ‘80s Music Talk) are all announced.]

Several tentacles of Allison Cameron's undersea empire are entangled here with these five musicians representing an amalgamation of c_RL, No Octopus Dances, Octopus, and Quadruped. That allowed for quick sonic shifts in moods pulled from the overlapping musical vocabularies of Mark Zurawinski (quiet shaking), Allison Cameron (siren oscillating), Stephen Parkinson (skritchy scratching), Nicole Rampersaud (bumblebee feedback) and Germaine Liu (drumstick skiffle).

Recording: Bill Gilliam & Nicole Rampersaud

Artist: Bill Gilliam & Nicole Rampersaud

Song: [improvisation]

Recorded at Array Space, July 23, 2017.

Bill Gilliam & Nicole Rampersaud - [improvisation]

This cozy Sunday night of "Over the Edge" improvisations was convened by Bill Gilliam to give five players each a couple chances to combine in different duos and trios. Between the bookending trios that started and ended the night, there were a pair of duo encounters, including this short volley of ideas between Bill Gilliam's prepared piano calls and Rampersaud's trumpet responses.
