A mildly-unsettled evening for the season's final patio show, with a piquant breeze and a few raindrops just before showtime. The forecast was calling for a late-evening warming pattern but instead there was a bit more of a hint of a autumnal chill in the air. Ever since I saw this duo make their formal live debut together they've been playing occasional gigs but I hadn't checked back in with them until now. With Cirone's tabla providing the propulsion, Fisher added textures on guitar and sax, with pads and loops often creating multiple layers for him to drift above.

[Colin Fisher will be playing a duo set alongside tar master Araz Salek at Track Could Bend #44 on Tuesday, November 6th at Wenona Lodge.]

Outside, it was like soup — a day that wasn't so extremely hot as overpoweringly humid. Late into evening it still felt super sticky-clammy outside, the barest hint of a breeze only making the night feel hotter. Out on the patio, this quartet conveyed all of that musically, with some sultry improvised fusion jams featuring bursts of excitement overtaken by dreamy languidity. Essentially an expended version of a trio that I'd seen the month before at The Tranzac, but adding a fourth corner and some damp, heavy atmosphere gave everything a rather different vibe.

This instalment of Colin Fisher's back patio summer series at Kensington's Pamanar Café saw him invite Matt Smith — Prince Nifty himself! — to stretch out some sounds. Sitting behind his table of precariously-balanced gear (laptop, keyb, mixer) he was joined by Fisher (on guit and pedals this time out) and Thom Gill (midi keyb, synth, laptop, kaoss pad, etc.). There were some "songs" in the first set, but the pieces were loosely structured enough that more than hanging together from any kind of melodic or lyrical sense they seemed webbed together by the hazy, half-hidden throughline more typical of dream logic. Coming off like extended selections from an ambient electronic pop opera, Smith sometimes seemed barely in control of the processing wrapped around his unparseable lyrics. Even the vocals disappeared by the time of the second set, which had this piece at its heart, sounding like something off a private press new age cassette produced by a mystic obsessed with Terry Riley-esque minimalism.

Colin Fisher spent one part of his summer hosting intimate shows on the beautiful back patio of this Kensington spot, mixing together appearances from his host of ongoing projects with other excursions. Although this pair have shared stages innumerable times in different units, and have jammed together, after conferring back and forth they averred that this was their first formal duo appearance.

Adjemian was on his trusty Korg, while Fisher had brought his regular and microtonal guitars, as well as his sopranino sax, a more recent acquisition. That latter instrument (which can be a bit more difficult to play with as much poise and gravitas as a larger horn with more heft) created some crazy tones when guided through the pedal chain. Adjemian seemed more interested steering toward a more measured pace, and though there were some phat chirps and rubbery ping-sproings, some of the best moments came when Fisher throttled back to drift a little with him.

Proposing to offer something less structured than his usual sets, Matthew Ramolo declared he was going to be "letting the synthesizer play itself." While he was definitely more hands-on than that statement might suggest, there was definitely some indeterminism at play as he shuffled patchcords to try and guide things along. The layers of ticks and melodic blips heard here is definitely less meditative than his usual offerings.
