In the mix:

  • New drone mix! Featuring autumnal and other sounds from ghost and tape, Naomi Yang, S'entendre, Andrew Hulse, Circles, Pat Martino, Garth Hudson, Castle If, and Brian Eno.

Bandcamp corner:

  • With the recent sale of Bandcamp (possibly to a company that doesn't understand what it does or why people use it, never mind respect its employees) there are a lot of awkward and tentative feelings going around. But for the moment, the status quo prevails, including the fact that Bandcamp Friday returns this week, so you can still put some money directly in the pockets of the artists you adore. Here's a couple things on my list to grab:

It happened this week...

  • ...on October 30, 2015 at Lee's Palace/The Dance Cave (DEATH TO T.O. V).

Members of Beliefs, Rolemodel and Teenanger - Roads

Fake Palms - Venus

Biblical - I Can't Explain/I Can See for Miles

Recording: B-17

Artist: B-17

Song: Strutter [KISS cover]

Recorded at Lee's Palace (DEATH TO T.O. V), October 30, 2015.

B-17 - Strutter

For its massive fifth year of Hallowe'en covers, DEATH TO T.O. upsized from its home at The Silver Dollar/Comfort Zone to Lee's Palace and the Dance Cave. That allowed it to keep its sprawling two-stage upstairs/downstairs dynamic even as it accommodated a bigger crowd than ever. Besides curating no fewer than seventeen (!) short sets, Dan Burke and Elliot Jones also kept things running on schedule, with one set starting quite crisply as the one on the other stage ended for nearly the whole night. And as always, the bands put in a lot of work — not just musically, but a lot of the time in trying to capture the look and mannerisms of the band they were covering.

One again showing their complete commitment to nailing the look and feel of the bands they cover, B-17 reached out for the most over-the-top act to emerge from the NYC glam underground, hitting the stage in full classic-era KISS finery, complete from the boots to the hair – and with perfect make-up as well. Hitting all the high points with the requisite swagger, this was a fitting way to close out a long night of rock'n'rolling all night.

Songs: I Can't Explain/I Can See for Miles [The Who covers]

Recorded at Lee's Palace (DEATH TO T.O. V), October 30, 2015.

Biblical - I Can't Explain/I Can See for Miles

Perhaps just a titch less engrossing than last year's spectacular Black Sabbath covers set, this still had all of the elements in place — Nick Sewell with Roger Daltrey's mic-swinging mojo, Andrew Scott with John Entwistle's skeleton costume, and (perhaps best of all) Jay Anderson unleashing his inner Keith Moon. At the end of this pairing, I thought he was simply going to explode in a fireball, Spinal Tap style.

Recording: Calvin Love

Artist: Calvin Love

Song: I Wanna Be Your Dog [The Stooges cover]

Recorded at Lee's Palace (DEATH TO T.O. V), October 30, 2015.

Calvin Love - I Wanna Be Your Dog

And as always, the bands put in a lot of work — not just musically, but a lot of the time in trying to capture the look and mannerisms of the band they were covering.

Shirtless and wired/wiry, Calvin Love managed to project the chaotic velocity of Iggy Pop on stage, injecting a dose of energy as the evening worked its way into the "headliner" portion of the night.

Recording: Fake Palms

Artist: Fake Palms

Song: Venus [Television cover]

Recorded at The Dance Cave (DEATH TO T.O. V), October 30, 2015.

Fake Palms - Venus

For its massive fifth year of Hallowe'en covers, DEATH TO T.O. upsized from its home at The Silver Dollar/Comfort Zone to Lee's Palace and the Dance Cave. That allowed it to keep its sprawling two-stage upstairs/downstairs dynamic even as it accommodated a bigger crowd than ever. And as always, the bands put in a lot of work — not just musically, but a lot of the time in trying to capture the look and mannerisms of the band they were covering.

The Fake Palms crew didn't go as far in trying to capture the image of the band they were playing — Television was a pretty anti-image band, anyways, but I somehow couldn't imagine Tom Verlaine taking the stage in a Kermit the Frog costume. And it took them three guitarists to match the work of Television's two — but beyond that, the band nailed the sound quite superbly, building up to a triumphant "Marquee Moon". I saw Television play back in aught-and-six and this was definitely more vital and memorable than that gig.

Recording: Blonde Elvis

Artist: Blonde Elvis

Song: Life on Mars [David Bowie cover]

Recorded at The Dance Cave (DEATH TO T.O. V), October 30, 2015.

With his full-immersion history of committing to cover sets, Jesse Laderoute didn't disappoint as he took the stage in Ziggy Stardust-era getup. The musical selections ranged beyond that, from an electrifying "Moonage Daydream" to start, reaching a little deeper with "Look Back in Anger" and "Sons of the Silent Age" before pushing forward "Modern Love" — songs presumably selected to maximize the effect of guest saxophonist Colin Fisher, who augmented the band alongside double-dipper Paul Elrichman on guit.

Recording: Sahara

Artist: Sahara

Song: Cherry-Coloured Funk [Cocteau Twins cover]

Recorded at The Dance Cave (DEATH TO T.O. V), October 30, 2015.

Sahara - Cherry-Coloured Funk

And as always, the bands put in a lot of work — not just musically, but a lot of the time in trying to capture the look and mannerisms of the band they were covering.

This group had the toughest time of the night getting started, pushing their start back about ten minutes as they fiddled with their gear on stage. Once they were going and settled in, they had a nice line on Cocteau Twins' shimmery, chorus-y guitars and sweet but semi-buried vox.

Recording: Good Enough Live Karaoke feat. Chris Murphy

Artist: Good Enough Live Karaoke feat. Chris Murphy

Songs: Suburban Home + Bikeage [Descendents covers]

And as always, the bands put in a lot of work — not just musically, but a lot of the time in trying to capture the look and mannerisms of the band they were covering.

Back in their formative days, the Good Enough karaoke crew helped Sloan's Chris Murphy explore his hardcore mojo by backing him for a full set of Minor Threat covers. That loud fast rules dynamic returned for this set that saw the band tackle no fewer than eleven songs from Milo Goes to College in their twenty-minute set.

Recording: Members of Century Palm + Germaphobes

Artist: Members of Century Palm + Germaphobes

Recorded at The Dance Cave (DEATH TO T.O. V), October 30, 2015.

Members of Century Palm + Germaphobes - 6060-842

For its massive fifth year of Hallowe'en covers, DEATH TO T.O. upsized from its home at The Silver Dollar/Comfort Zone to Lee's Palace and the Dance Cave. That allowed it to keep its sprawling two-stage upstairs/downstairs dynamic even as it accommodated a bigger crowd than ever. And as always, the bands put in a lot of work — not just musically, but a lot of the time in trying to capture the look and mannerisms of the band they were covering.

Jesse Locke and Alexander Hamlyn from Century Palms supplied the new wave rhythm'n'throb, and up front Germaphobes' Paul Erlichman nailed Fred Schneider's sing-speak while Liz Collins and Julia Dickens served as vocal foils Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson. Mostly concentrating on the band's ace early stuff (though the post-Ricky era was acknowledged with the sublime "Roam" rather than the ubiquitous "Love Shack") the set ended with "Rock Lobster". The group completely captured the spirit, holding a joyfully-goofy sock-hop party on stage.

Recording: Explorer feat. Matty Dee

Artist: Explorer feat. Matty Dee

Song: Under My Wheels [Alice Cooper cover]

And as always, the bands put in a lot of work — not just musically, but a lot of the time in trying to capture the look and mannerisms of the band they were covering.

Alex Gray was totally on point fronting this re-creation of the classic Alice Cooper band, eyes caked with black make-up as he stalked the stage while Matty Dee tore off the guitar parts. Changing into a straight-jacket and everything, the only touch missing was throwing a live chicken to the rabid Toronto crowd — which is probably for the best.

And as always, the bands put in a lot of work — not just musically, but a lot of the time in trying to capture the look and mannerisms of the band they were covering.

A star turn here for Jesse Crowe in the high point of the night's early going. With the room now properly filling in, there was a heavy silence in the air as Crowe embodied Beth Gibbons' frail strength, slumping over her microphone as she delivered the band's trip-hop torch songs (and well as a rousing opening salvo in Third's "Machine Gun").

Recording: The Two Koreas

Artist: The Two Koreas

Song: Monkey On Your Back [Clinic cover]

Recorded at The Dance Cave (DEATH TO T.O. V), October 30, 2015.

The Two Koreas - Monkey On Your Back

For its massive fifth year of Hallowe'en covers, DEATH TO T.O. upsized from its home at The Silver Dollar/Comfort Zone to Lee's Palace and the Dance Cave. And as always, the bands put in a lot of work — not just musically, but a lot of the time in trying to capture the look and mannerisms of the band they were covering.

This might have been the set where the band had the smallest conceptual distance to travel from their own identity to the band they were covering. Just throw on some surgical masks and scrubs and voila! Amusingly, Stuart Berman's dance steps rendered the band way less static on stage than I remember the actual Clinic being when I saw in the same building a few years back.

Recorded at Lee's Palace (DEATH TO T.O. V), October 30, 2015.

And as always, the bands put in a lot of work — not just musically, but a lot of the time in trying to capture the look and mannerisms of the band they were covering.

Adam Terejko's vocals sometimes had a bit more of a yowl than Macca's smoothness, but the Linda-less band jumped into the busy arrangements with gusto, sounding at their best when they got into the change-the-style medley vibes of this tune and (the admittedly non-Wings) "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey".

Recording: Sportsfan

Song: Sportsfan - The Modern Age [The Strokes cover]

Recorded at The Dance Cave (DEATH TO T.O. V), October 30, 2015.

And as always, the bands put in a lot of work — not just musically, but a lot of the time in trying to capture the look and mannerisms of the band they were covering.

Leading off the night, there was a fairly thin crowd up in the Dance Cave. So far as I can tell, this was one of several purpose-built bands playing the night, with Ali Haberstroh taking on Julian Casablancas' louche swagger.

Recording: Cellphone

Artist: Cellphone

Song: Whiplash [second version] [Metallica cover]

Recorded at Comfort Zone ("DEATH TO T.O. IV: A Halloween Covers Show"), October 30, 2014.

Cellphone - Whiplash

Once again Dan Burke and Elliott Jones celebrated Hallowe'en by turning the Silver Dollar and Comfort Zone into a giant, non-stop musical frenzy, with nearly twenty bands doing mini cover sets. The bands — several of which were constructed just for the occasion — all took the task seriously, putting a lot of work not only into the music but also costumes and all the little things to enhance their tributes. The only downside of the night was that with so many bands on the bill, it was impossible to stage-manage a consistently efficient staggering between the stages, so that it didn't take long for bands upstairs and downstairs to be playing simultaneously, forcing the crowd to make hard decisions on who to see and who to miss. Otherwise, it was a fabulously fun rock'n'roll marathon of a night.

Closing things out downstairs, Cellphone attempted to ride the lightning with some frenzy-fast thrashbursts — getting through their setlist quickly enough that they had time to close out their set by replaying the first one they'd played.

Otherwise, it was a fabulously fun rock'n'roll marathon of a night.

Elliott Jones (of the now-defunct Ell V Gore) has an ominous croon that makes him a natural to tackle Jim Morrison, but the real secret weapon here is Robin Hatch as the critical Ray Manzarek foil. The set could have ended in disaster when the PA and stage lights blew out, but instead Jones seized the moment to start pulling members of the crowd up on stage to dance as the band grooved behind him.

Biblical were also fully-committed to inhabiting the spirit of the band they were honouring on this night, and easily tackled the requisite sonic wallop to flatten the packed house. Jordan Howard (who would also be playing with the band on their subsequent U.S. tour) was in fine form on guitar here while Nick Sewell prowled the stage in Ozzy mode.

In a night filled with intense crowd reactions, this might have had the most joyful thrum to erupt in front of the stage, with the audience bouncing up and down, singing along and ultimately moshing as the trio tackled Beasties' straight-up hip-hop tracks before strapping on their instruments for this rockin' finale.

Taking the prize for best costumes and best job at embodying the spirit of the group they were covering, B-17 were fabulously glam/fey/trash talking. Clint Rogerson was in full David Johansen frontman mode, so the Arthur Kane bassman duty fell to Disraelis' Cam Jingles. With their feather boas and Noo Yawk accents, this was as close as you could get to Max's Kansas City, 1974 without a time machine.

Burning Love brought their full-on hardcore roar (and a toga) to these quick blasts from Hot Snakes catalogue.
