It's been a while since I've seen Bonnie Trash playing — I mean, it's been a while since I've seen pretty much any of the rock bands I dig doing their thing — so it was a real treat so see their sound and their presence expanding to fit a much bigger stage than I'd ever seen them performing on. Powered by a thundering rhythm section, both Emmalia Bortolon-Vettor (guit) and Sarafina Bortolon-Vettor (vox) carried themselves with rockstar gravitas, the former wringing organs and full choirs from the pedalboard and the latter wrapped around the mic stand, going deep on an internal journey.

Bonnie Trash - Sleepless Sheep

Sarafina and Emmalia Bortolon-Vettor can raise plenty ruckus on their own, but this outing saw them with some support from Chris Worden on second guitar (though to some extent fulfilling the role of bassist in the band). The set was still centred on last year's Ezzelini's Dead EP, but their music was delivered with a bolder confidence than I've seen from the band in the past, making them a rock'n'roll force to be reckoned with.

Bonnie Trash - Everyone's a Killer

Long Winter ended its abbreviated, roving season with a return to The Gladstone, filling the second floor with art and the Ballroom and Melody Bar with ping-ponging live sets. Triumphing over adversity, this goth-y Guelph duo persevered through some technical difficulties to present songs with striking flourishes and some ace guitar tones. On the cusp of releasing a new EP based around themes of exploring Guelph's Italian heritage (and some cannibalistic folklore) this isn't just cookie-cutter pop stuff.
