Juini Booth/Patrick Smith/Mark Hundevad - Love in Outer Space

The jazz game can involve some long-term investments. Bassist Juini Booth has recorded and toured with a lot of legends in the past forty years, including stints with the likes of McCoy Tyner and Sun Ra. Amongst his journeys was a trip up to Toronto in the early 90's to sit in as a guest on a recording session with the Free Music Ensemble, a group that included percussionists Mark Hundevad and Mike Gennaro. Fast forward a couple decades and change and Booth made his return to T.O. for this show once again facilitated by Mark Hundevad, who put together a couple nights in this back-alley rehearsal/party space.

After a set from his Archives of Eternity group (where he plays vibes alongside Gennaro on drums) he moved behind the kit (obscured by his overhead angled cymbals) to support Booth, and the pair were joined by Patrick Smith on sax, one of the younger musicians that complete the Archives lineup. (The other is Andrew Furlong, who loaned his bass to and got a lesson from Booth, showing another of the long-term investments in the jazz game.)

The set tackled some speedy hard bop with plenty of freedom of lateral movement, especially from Booth. A driving rhythm section of this calibre pushed Smith to his limits, and though he was blowing with flushed exertion rather than the others' measured calm he kept pace admirably. And now Patrick Smith has played with Juini Booth, who played with McCoy Tyner, who played with Benny Golson, who played with Diz, who played with... well, you get the idea. Long-term-investments.
