Wapiti - Spring of Chosroes

An evening of contrasts at the season's first Emergents show saw things open with this Montréal duo who specialize in quiet sounds, mixing Daniel Áñez's prepared piano plucks and Geneviève Liboiron's violin. Graciela Paraskevaídis' Viva Voce for solo piano included immense pregnant pauses to let clanged low chords reverberate in the room for as long as possible, while Nicolaus A. Huber's With Ego Amplitudes added slow-screech violin scrapes and some other extended techniques. This closing Feldman piece was inspired by the delicate details of a Persian rug, carrying over the source's careful construction and methodical weaving.
