Recording: Heraclitus Akimbo

Artist: Heraclitus Akimbo

Songs: Western Stasis + At the Vilhjalmur Stefansson Monument

Recorded in The Sun Room at 918 Bathurst, January 18, 2026.

Heraclitus Akimbo - Western Stasis

Heraclitus Akimbo - At the Vilhjalmur Stefansson Monument

This afternoon was convened as a celebration of the release of "I know what I have experienced and I know what it has meant to me", an album of music for solo lap steel guitar. Unpacking some of the ideas behind the albums's pieces, some musical ghosts were chased and arctic voyages described.

Recording: Charter of the Forest

Artist: Charter of the Forest

Songs: Come All Ye [Fairport Convention cover] + Big White Cloud [John Cale cover]

Recorded in The Sun Room at 918 Bathurst, January 18, 2026.

Charter of the Forest - Come All Ye

Charter of the Forest - Big White Cloud

Opening up an afternoon of investigations into folk music, this was a real all-star group, bringing together Isla Craig (voice), Karsten Stryker (acoustic guitar), Kurt Newman (low-volume electric guitar), Pete Johnston (bass), and Blake Howard (percussion). The musical approach was a jammy take on folk-rock, though more Fairport Convention (whose Liege & Lief was a primary touchstone) than Grateful Dead — though also with some bluegrass flourishes. The material also hewed towards "traditional songs of the British Isles", though in some cases the traditions reached back to more recent rolling minstrels such as those heard here.

Monday Roundup #266

Community notes:

  • I never met DB Hawkes, but as a field recordist/music documenter in Toronto, I understood the magnitude of his presence. After his recent passing, there is a funeral fundraiser taking place. "DB is also renowned for having amassed an Archive of live recordings: Every Caribana, every Afrofest and virtually every Reggae concert that ever took place in Toronto. Now, a precious body of work consisting of 100's of hours of music history, in various media formats, must be secured, transported and safely stored. This task, along with the general gathering of his belongings, clearing out of the apartment and initial funeral costs are issues easily addressed, but we need funds to get it going." Important stuff (as is supporting his family with the funeral costs) — more info here.
  • Meanwhile, another year has passed, and while the pace continues to slow down, this blog is still here! Last week was the MFS blogoversary — we are now seventeen!

Recording: Toronto Improvisers Orchestra

Artist: Toronto Improvisers Orchestra

Songs: [two pieces]

Recorded at The Tranzac (Southern Cross Lounge), January 11, 2026.

Toronto Improvisers Orchestra - [1st set, short piece]

Toronto Improvisers Orchestra - [2nd set, last piece]

I entered into the room with this set already in progress — which involved, in this case, Rod Campbell engaged in a discussion with his fellow musicians on possible ways to musically interpret a photograph of a snow-covered tree. Later, there would be some conduction (from Campbell as well as Susanne Farkas) which also involved discussion of how the group used their repertoire of hand signals. Otherwise, as with the second selection here, there were some freely-improvised sounds.

[The TIO is back in action tomorrow (Sunday, February 8th) starting at noon in the Southern Cross.]

Bandcamp corner:

  • Hey, Bandcamp Friday is back this week! Here's some things on my list...

In memoriam:

Sad to hear of the passing of the sui generis Jeff Burke, who elevated any ensemble he was a part of with his bassoon (and, occasionally, theremin). Glad I got to see/document him in some different contexts (I recall catching him several times when he was bucking on the TTC, but sadly don't have any recordings of that). Here's some sounds from the archive...

  • ...on November 12, 2014 at The Tranzac (Southern Cross Lounge).

Arnd Jurgensen and Friends - [set 2 excerpt]

  • ...on March 10, 2015 at Array Space (Audiopollination 28.2).

Attariwala-Burke-Sokol - [edited excerpt from an improvisation]

  • ...on February 9, 2020 at The Tranzac's Southern Cross Lounge (SynapticCircusSundays).

Kathryn Ladano/Jeff Burke/Alex Fournier/Germaine Liu/Nilan Perera - [excerpt from 2nd piece]

Recording: Vividness Trio

Artist: Vividness Trio

Song: unknown*

Recorded at Wenona Lodge (Track Could Bend #112), January 6, 2026.

Vividness Trio - unknown

Laura Gillis has been crafting songs as Vividness for quite some time now, though this evolution is a slightly more recent development. Joined by Michelangelo Iaffaldano the mysterious Hildegard von Bingo on guitar and Lorne Shapiro on viola de gamba, the goal here was as much to explore textures and interactions as to deliver songs.

You can check out some more from this set over on youtube:

Recording: Duo BEAK

Artist: Duo BEAK

Songs: [opening and closing sections of an improvisation]

Recorded at Wenona Lodge (Track Could Bend #112), January 6, 2026.

Duo BEAK - [opening section]

Duo BEAK - [closing section]

A new moniker for a longstanding friend duo, this set from Kayla Milmine and Bea Labikova saw them testing out some new instruments. Milmine, a longtime one-sax specialist on soprano has branched out with a sopranino saxophone, while Labikova (who also had the usual "electronic" set up with pedals and throat mic, as well as her alto) showed off her beautiful handcrafted gajdy, the Slovakian version of the bagpipe. That lead to some buzzing and squealing in the higher registers, as can be heard in the first section here as the pair explored how these instruments can share space. After further experiments with plastic tubing and throat-rumbles, things moved a little lower for the closing zone.
